I play solo almost all of the time save the weekends and I have a lot of problems with the skeleton galleons. I've killed the kraken solo, I've killed megalodons solo, but the skeleton galleons are tough, I've heard people say they're easy solo so I must be using the wrong techniques, cause they are very difficult for me.
Tips for the skeleton galleons?
I wouldn't say that they are "easy" @Wraith-04. They are a challenge, but good strategy will have you come out on top most times.
First, you need to be well supplied. I would say 40 cannonballs along with 25 pieces of wood should be more than enough.
Second, you need to use the environment to your advantage as much as possible. My favorite tactic is to kite them into an area where you can play to the sloop's advantages and take advantage of the skellies questionable sailing techniques. Think about cutlass cay, rapier cay, or shipwreck bay. Those islands are great because they are an island situated within a perilous set of rocks that border them. With your sloop, you can easily slice and weave between the rocks and islands, and force the skelly gally to take on water as they continually crash into obstructions they are not nimble enough to move through.
Third, you need to ensure the majority of your broadsides hit below the waterline for the gally. Skellies cannot bail water, and that means the better your shots are, the faster that irreversible damage pours into the ship. With enough supplies and good shooting, victory is only a matter of time.
Fourth, if you can find cursed cannonballs; especially a ballast ball, you can end the fight much more quickly. Pepper the gally until it has taken on a deck of water (and is riding a level below the water line) and hit it with the ballast ball. From there, 3-4 follow up shots should sink it outright.
Finally, if you stumble on a passive skelly ship going about its business, wait until it pulls close to an island and slows up (this requires you to have a gunpowder keg). Pull your ship alongside it (they won't shoot), jump into the water and board their ship. You can sprint down two decks and light the GP keg off on the bottom deck. Even if you die immediately afterword, you still have done a whole floor of irreversible damage to the skelly ship.
Anyways those are some tips I have. So long as I am prepared, I end up winning the majority of those fights solo; especially against the passive ones.
Good luck on your adventures!
@wraith-04 ram them jump on board and kill the captain and the ones on the cannons first then kill the ones down below deck then if your ship is close jump back to it and repair your ship then fire cannons into the galleons hull below the water line and then they will sink mate

Don’t die yourself or get knocked off your ship. Put five or six shots in them max and then repair, rearm or steer. The aim is to wither them down in about 10 mins, not try to sink them in five.
I might be wrong but I don’t think you get Captains Chests or Skulls for the new random Skele ships.
You absolutely do get skelly captain chests and skulls from random skelly ships. I got 2 skulls and 2 chests from them yesterday. The Meg also has a chance to drop them as well as stronghold skulls, chests and ancient bone dust crates. As for how to take them down, I haven't done much solo, but I can tell you from experience in both cursed sails and in Shrouded Spoil, it takes 1 keg. Nothing more. Get on, drop it at the bottom of the 2nd staircase and run to the brig area at the back of the bottom level. You won't get killed standing there, and it'll take out a few skellies when it blows. From there, just kill and guard those 4 holes. My crewmate and I are taking them down in about 15 secs or less.
@scottstixx When you're solo, trying to board them is not easy (I never succeeded in getting anywhere).
@Wraith-04
My usual strategy is to:- reef the sail about 3/4 of the way (or reef the front two masts completely when on a galleon).
- Turn the wheel completely to one direction (the one where you have the most room). You're unlikely to hit an island or some rocks and don't have to worry about sails or wheel.
- Man the cannons if you can.
- If you hear water rushing in, go belowdecks and repair. Bail all water, and return to your guns.
- Aim your shots below the waterline. More often than not, when a shot hits the water and appears to be too low, it will still hit.
- If the skeleton ship rams you and sails alongside you, you can aim for the crew on deck, but if you're short on cannonballs I wouldn't. Just go belowdecks and repair or stock up on wood and bananas. You can't (usually) hit them low enough to do serious damage. Same is true when the skeleton ship is directly in front or behind your ship.
- After you've been rammed, check your heading and see if you've still got enough space to make your circles.
If you don't come up against too many nasty cursed cannonballs, this can work quite well.
@scottstixx
Interesting. I am not getting the captains chests or skulls as a Pirate Legend doing spawning Skeleton ships solo.Actually turned the game off today thinking the commendation is not achievable solo? Strange.
@biter-wylie yep, absolutely. I'm PLA9.5. We picked up 2 of each yesterday. We attacked every single skelly ship we saw. My sloop partner and I were duo slooping every fleet during the event and we became very efficient at sinking them. I think in total we sank probably about 8 in our session last night as we were rolling around. Maybe we just got extremely lucky, as we also got a stronghold skull and a crate of ancient bone dust off of shadowmaw, but we've definitely been getting them. The other 3 members of my gally crew are also getting them. All of them PLA10.
@biter-wylie Might just be getting unlucky. I've received a skull and a chest from two different skeleton ships while solo slooping, but lots of other times I just get regular loot as well.
not solo (yet) but random skele ships arnt droping skele chest or skele capton skulls at most we got was basicly the same stuff u woud get form a meg
all tho saying that the 1st 2-3 skele ships me and my crew sunk we didt get any loot bc we was impashent and didt relize it took that long for it to surface1 of my mates grab a gunpowder keg and jump on the skele boat get to the bottom and set it off defending the holes in till it sinks
or we shoot the curse bal that stops them from using a bucket after putting in a few holes
@mr-dragon-raaar
normal chests ya but me thort we was on about skele capton chests that u get form skele ships under the skele cloud@wraith-04 disse em Tips for the skeleton galleons?:

I think the best way to sink them solo is using the Chest of Sorrow. You put the chest into his deck and wait.
@octopus-lime yes I know if you have a peace ball try to hit them with it and then fire cannon balls into them
- Don't play solo, it's a lot less fun then playing with friends.
- Take a gunpowder barrel give your friend(s) the wheel and have him (them) guard the ship.
- Get on board of the skelly ship and make your way downstairs.
- Light the fuse and drop the keg right at the bottom of the stairs to the lower hull.
- Skeletons explode ship has 4 holes and just keep killing the repairing skeletons while the ship sinks.
- Profit pick up treasure turn it in, raise your glass to your victory together with your friends.
@wraith-04 Love the other reply's and thought I would give a little of my own.
If they are sitting in a spot I get behind them and let the cursed cannonball you may have fly, then I fire like a mad pirate with my hair.......wait, I don't have any hair so forget that. I fire the cannon as fast as I can at the lowest point even hitting it under water. I then pull half sail and a full right or left rudder, fire cannons, patch, bail, fire cannons, ect. Just keep your aim at the lowest part, make bailing and patching priority over cannon fire. Fire cannons when you have a few seconds between bailing and you should take em down.
Good luck and hope to see you at sea....Not sure how surefire this one is but during one fight while I was bailing water and repairing the ship came up right next to me and our two hulls grinded a bit. They just stood at their cannons making skeleton noises at me while I bailed my water onto their ship. I am assuming we were so close I was technically out of the higher up galleon cannon range.
One tip I stand by is never let one make the first move. Engage on your terms not there's and it can make a world of difference.
