Styling is good game play is smooth seems like a solidly built game. I haven’t run into any technical issues. Some of the riddles require some thought to figure out which is a nice break from the mindless play of most games I encounter lately. The real question I have is what’s the point of this game? It seems like a relentless grind with an unhealthy dose of continuous grieving. Even taking down a skeleton fort yielded loot that to me felt like it wasnt worth the time. Add in other players who relentlessly raid you for absolutely no gain and I fail to see a reason to continue playing. Thankfully game pass allowed me to try this game with out actually buying it. Would love to hear some counter points or be shown the point to the game.

I do understand where you’re coming from, but at the same time, I’ve had the best gaming experiences of my life playing this game. If your friends don’t play it, I suggest you try the LFG system to find good crewmates.
As for the grind, it’s only a grind if you’re grinding. Why grind when you can just play instead?
I do encourage you to give it another try but it’s definitely best with a good crew or at least one other person who knows how to have a good time. If you still have game pass time left, I’ll be playing a lot tomorrow and I’d be happy to crew up with you, but at the end of the day, not every game is for everyone. For me personally it’s my favorite game since conker’s bad fur day.
What is the point of any game?
Mainly, to have fun, of course. If you are not having fun, find another pastime. I am sure there are plenty of other sports, games, and pastimes you don't enjoy much. Are you a fan of chess, ten-pin bowling, deck quoits, Scrabble, Myst, and The Sims? If not, do you go to the appropriate forums and voice your concerns?
Why do people who don't enjoy Sea of Thieves feel the need to come onto the Forums and seek justification/rebuttal for their opinion? Just move on.
Sea of Thieves is a game entirely about the journey, not the destination. The story is written by you and your crew and is unique to your experiences across the sea.
Voyages (and Pirate Legend, for that matter) are only there to encourage you to go out and explore; it's a very small carrot. The reputation you gain with each faction is more of an added benefit of experiencing the game, not the other way around.
That's my take, anyway. This isn't a game you can just "beat". It's one you simply experience day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month. You and your crew make your own fun, and it's a different experience every session.
This kind of game is not for everyone, but there are many, many of us who enjoy it for what it is.
Cheers.
Well, one idea would be to look at the game as a very advanced chatroom. A place where you can talk with your friends (or find new ones), and do some easy treasure hunting on the side.
Another view is that it is a rather big sandbox with some toys to play with. They are slowly adding more toys into the box, and the box itself will soon grow a little aswell. So its really up to you what you want to do with said toys in our little pirate haven.
Its a beautiful softcore game that is best enjoyed with a couple of friends. :)
@surveyorpete Was simply asking. Wasn’t meant in a duragatory way. I thought I may have missed an aspect or overlooked a portion of the game. Figured before uninstalling I’d ask.
Fair enough. But what you see is what you get. That appeals to some, and others find it lacking. I like @Ghostfire1981 's comment about it an advanced chatroom - a chatroom with wild seas and boats to sail in. There are still IRC chatrooms out there that amuse some people for hours. And they have NO content but what the people bring themselves.
Don't uninstall until next week. A lot of new stuff drops on Tuesday (or soon thereafter) and you might find that more interesting.

What's the point of any game, waste / pass time having fun.
Mate, a lot of us including myself had the same attitude towards the game and I have to admit that once I forgot about chasing the pirate legend title the seas have become smoother sailing for me. Much less of a "grind".
I find that when I'm not playing the game I am missing the company of good friends that I have made through this game.
Just chillaxin', venting, getting to know one another on a more personal basis or discussing and understanding the differences between his location of America to my location being Australia. What's considered as being acceptable and what's not, the prices of things, etc.
Of course not all of that is asked on the first date, so to speak. But generally just get to know the other crew mate to see if you have a compatible mindset or not for future partnerships in the game. Many friendships carry over from one game to another. If I play solo it doesn't take long for me to get bored.
I can only talk to the chickens for so long before the pig starts making derogative comments about my sanity. Like he's any better, right? As my crew mate says, "it's the world's most expensive chatroom". I'd agree and add that it's also one of the most interesting ones.
Learn to have fun with it and it's really not all that bad.
Sorry, the snake asked me to say that. :o)Glad you liked that description of the game. :)
Then again is the game repetitive? Yes, yes it is. But if one enjoys it in small portions with a bunch of friends it can be really amazing. For me (and my friends) its all about the small stories and adventures that unfold as we play and some totally random things happen.
Im not trying to defend the game or tell anyone how to play it... im just giving my own experience of the game. Perhaps it helps someone to give it another try, or not.
But i do hope to see you all on the seas... greeting you with grog or the occasional cannonball. ;)
It's a truely open world pirate adventure game. If you expect to be railroaded into an experience. Get Skinner boxed into doing things or any thing else most modern day "open world" games have conditioned you in you're going to be disappointed.
However. If you expect to sail the seas be a pirate and get booty. Invite some friends band together and have adventures this is the game for you!
I've seen many people call this game out on not having content. But I've played this game since launch and I'm still to get bored. (and I got bored playing the Witcher 3 before de story ended)
My advice is to get a group op likeminded people together (mind you I said likeminded people because friends who all are going to like and play this game are hard to come by) and start a galleon. Get into some adventures!
You just need some mates, there's plenty to find in the forums or through discord etc. I'd compare it to D&D, you wouldn't go buy some books and dice stick them on your table and go telling people on the internet how boring it was. Get some mates together, couple of beers, decide what sort of a pirate you want to be and go find adventure! This game is what you make of it, it's all about the social side, if you haven't got anyone to play with and the other ships you come across aren't feeling chatty it can definitely feel like a dull grind fest, but you can always just explore the world, make it your mission to see every island, makes riddles easier later if you know where stuff is, and it's quite a pretty game to just sail around looking at. Ultimately it's all about what you want from a game, if it's not your cup of tea then fair enough, but I'd give it ago with someone else before you sack it off entirely.

I completely agree it just feels like they are moaning. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but threads like this don't help and the OP hasn't provided any ways they feel could improved the game. I remember when I first play Fallout 3 and Oblivion I hated them but I stuck with it and now they are two of my most favourite games. Like others have said you need a group of mates and the whole game will change completely. At the end of the day though isn't every game a pointless grind?
althou its sold as adventure, i find this as a working community game. Takes a bit of patience, because of the tempo of the game. After numerous attempts to find a good crew among the random ones is rewarding, and being able to be proud of the body of work you put down. Whats the point of BF or GTA? Somehow this game is jotted down as a one trick pony, when other, just as repetetive ones gets to avoid that critique. If taking down a fort + galleon is not worth the trouble because of the amount of loot or progress, find a game that reafirms progress better, one of those that gives you vocal or text acknoledgment. Good job ! Awesome!

Bingo.
Horses for courses and that, but I do take issue with the attitude that leads to a topic title like this. In this case, an unwillingness to think about it more is not the issue: the OP actually asking for thoughts, which is a good thing, but too often you see that kind of statement alongside complete unwillingness to wonder why anyone might like the game for what it is. That is lazy thinking, and I despise it. Furthermore, it strikes me as counterproductive. So often I also see moans about how games are all the same, how uninspired modern gaming is, etc etc, and then a game pushes in certain directions with a very particular focus, and is dismissed as being entirely without merit. Idiocy.
@dh-kustom This is about the adventures you have and the journey you walk, not about the end of a pointless grind. OK, think about this cause this is something I does yesterday to protect a fort key while sailing at an sloop with one of my crewmates: You're at your ship, guarding it while your crew is doing something at the island. Suddenly, a sloop, being chased by a galleon, its comming towards you. You start to say that you're friendly, and the pirate at the sloop, when is near your ship, say you "Hi guys, good afternoon here..." while slowly stopping at your side, down your firing ark; meanwhile, the galleon is close to catch him, so they anchor near your ship. You decide to not interfere, but the sloop start shooting the galleon out of the other galleons firing ark.
Two pirates of the galleon jump in the water and when they are near the sloop ladders, the pirate of the sloop drop the sails and reposition himself at the other side of the galleon. The 2 other pirates try to get the cannons but the sloop pirate kill them with 3 shoots. Now, that 2 of the galleon pirates are dead, an the other 2 are swimming comming back to their ship, the sloop pirate get a gunpowder barrel and get inside the galleons hull.
Now is when the spectacle becomes funny. You hear at the voice chat the clip of "alarm" of the Commandos: Behind enemy lines game ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ess37YGo6IU ) and then, you hear the explosion of the gunpowder barrel. You hear some shoots, and you see that the sloop pirate kill one of the galleons ones at the deck while he tried to bail water. The ship gets sunk, and when the pirate that just have sunk a 4 galleon alone at your eyes leaves triumphantly, he say "I love you guys, I love you so much" and then put at the voice chat "My heart will go on" of Céline Dion.
What you maybe dont know is that the galleon was chassing a fort key that the partner of the sloop captain was guarding at Discovery Ridge (after fleeing of shores of plenty just after completing the fort), and that the original plan when they didn't notice that the key was not anymore at the ship, was to get sunk far away at the red sea and come back with the ship to the partner with the key then. But well, plans change and fortune favours the intrepid. You never know what kind of lunatics you're going to meet at sea, but not all the games can bring you the stories of this one if you take it just like it is "a path that you want to travel with the people you met at it". And actually, the booty at the fort doesn't matter.
@amancebacabras Love it. So many of the best things in game have been like that. A favourite of mine was also at a fort. I swum from the Fort to nearby giant sea stacks, holding a key in my cold, shivering hands, desparately hiding from the enemy. A crew member bravelyy fought off sharks, and our other crew sailed our battered, creaking galleon away from the psychotic attentions of 2 sloops, whilst beyond another galleon was caught by the kraken and a third sloop merrily laughed at everything... It's amazing when it clicks.

Living things like these ones its funny, but I actually want to be the 3rd person doing random stuf and sudenly looking at this kind of circus XD. Yesterday for example I laughed more because the dude at the castle of the galleon seeing me and laughing while I figthed than for what I was doing to the other galleon.
The best thing about SoT to me is it gives you the freedom to play how you want to.
My mic is broken but I've been able to communicate and make friends with fellow traders and helping those in need with simple commands. It feels rewarding to me.
I even had some pirates chase and kill me, shout at me to talk but i laugh about it. Whats a Pirate game with the risk? Keeps the world on your toes.
Sometimes my favorite pasttime in a session is spotting a ship on the horizion and watching it, seeing where they go.
Everyones experiences differ, but there is always something to love imo.@dh-kustom Could I humbly suggest that you change the title of the post to be more suitable, if the intention is to discover why so many people like it.
In your post you say some good things about the game and that you enjoyed it and like the visual style but your title says "the game is terrible"
As many have said before, this is a journey not a destination game. I personally like the amount of immersion there is. Sailing with a friend means you would actually just chat and talk as if you were actually on a boat with them and that social aspect is absent in many of the games around today. That alone is special. Also the visual style is beautiful and just sailing to a destination can bring a sense of calm even if you're constantly searching the horizon for sails of potential enemies.
The way this game is built makes it so everyone is on an even playing field and bragging rights come from cosmetics. And i think it works very well. If vertical progression and a story is what you're looking for, maybe it's not the right game for you. But I'd get some friends together and voyage on a galleon at least. See if that doesn't give you a sense of adventure.
Ultimately the game is not for everyone. I could talk myself blue in the face with all the fun I have had and yet my brother still won't touch it beyond his limited time playing it.
I think the trick is to open yourself to opportunity versus expecting the game to hand you something. My friend and I only get to play once a week but we have a blast each week by going in with zero expectations or hard goals and just going with the flow of the evening. Just this past friday we somehow got into a game of 'No it's your castaway chest' with another sloop. They chased us across the map to give that damned thing back to us and we chased them down to return it. Turned into a heated (yet friendly) brawl on the docks as neither team wanted it. All this happened after the same crew paid us in a captains chest to help sink a galleon chasing them (found out after the fact the sloop stole fort loot from the galleon but that's someone else's politics...we got paid so we did the job)
Another time we dressed as women and (tastefully)flirted our way onto a galleon, another we had a beachside fight club and drunk dueled some people, another time we got bored with a galleon so we waged epic war against each other. We've messed with skull forts a little, robbed some people here and there but you get the idea...the list goes on.
One problem I have with event's is it gives me a to do list which in my opinion/experience distracts me from being open to roll with the above but that's a whole other debate. Point is if you go in with your standard video game check list then yes...there is nothing to do but if you forget about the list...you can do whatever you want.

OMG that sounds like fun. Must try this.
"Excuse me sir, I believe you've dropped your foul bounty skull"
@m1sterpunch
It was an unexpected blast. Just picture a good ol' pvp sloop fight across the whole map only once you boarded you were just dropping off useless loot instead of gutting the crew....the gutting happened later~At one point we were chasing them and they did the whole anchor drop maneuver but they dropped off a c**p skull as they did it and then just jumped overboard.
I've noticed a trend in fans of the game to essentially position themselves as somehow intellectually or creatively superior to those who find it lacking in content.
They tend to say that it's the journey, not the destination.
Or that YOU create the content. That sort of thing.
And they are spot on in the same sense that a puppy will chase its tail, a toddler will play with a ball, or a chimp is happy with two sticks to beat together.
And they are right about it being the journey not the destination, because right now there isn't a destination.
It's a train ride that's on a simple loop track. There's some nice stuff to look at out the window too.
Only you can't really interact with it.
So yeah, right now the game absolutely is as you said. And I even use the term "game" lightly, because there isn't currently enough of it to call it a full game.
It's more like a demo.By design of course - GAAS is the new early access but for full price!
Of course one other thing, if you do express concerns about the game, or dissatisfaction, expect the same few people to come in and either tell you to leave (which is counter productive if they want the game to thrive)
Or that it's not finished yet.
So I honestly wouldn't bother.
This forum has been gradually shifting into full on echo chamber mode.I have never played a game where a crew gets to pick an adventure and ad hoc side adventures in the mean time. SoT provides just that, it is different at every turn, you never know what you are going to get into. You may have a great run and return several items for gold, or you may play for a couple of hours and get skunked, however the adventure on both ends make it the game it is. Things happen just by playing. You get to choose to be friendly or villainous at any moment. You don't get to choose when you need to defend whether it is from environmental spawns or opposing players, this creates uniqueness and loads of fun.
All adventures are different. I play solo, but really enjoy playing with a crew much more. No matter what I decide to do, it is always different, and the grind occurs organically from playing, rather than racing to the finish line. Enjoy the seas!!!

I assume you've never played Minecraft, or if you have, that you also didn't enjoy it, because it's the same type of game.
See, what I find problematic are people who come in expecting it to be a different game (for whatever reason as it was never hyped as anything other than what it is), and when they find out it's not what they expected, they want RARE to morph it into something it was never intended to be.
@szawel123 said in this game is terrible:
Wow, so whats the point of minecraft? You just enjoy the world and community not just "grind" to pirate legend...
Exactly. Minecraft has about the same level of "endgame" content as Sea of Thieves (a place literally called "The End"), yet people spend hours in a single session digging through the terrain, gathering resources, building structures, etc.
To say that there's a "point" to it all other than to simply waste some time having fun would be an overstatement, and that's exactly what Sea of Thieves is as well.
It is not Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and never will be. If someone wants that type of game, they'll have to look elsewhere.
But I will not apologize for enjoying Sea of Thieves.
@mrmcdoll the arguments I get into on here I guarantee these forums aren't an echo chamber! As for the game you either get it or you don't, no superiority, just different game styles, some people don't like the style, fairynuff, some people do. I don't like COD, don't play it, don't go on Call of Duty forums to complain either. Most people that have responded have tried to be constructive, others haven't, trying another game isn't a criticism of the player, just that other games might appeal more than this one, enough people do enjoy it to prove that it's a good game, I've been enjoying it for months, way longer than anything other than halo (nearly 20 years!)

The people I see have best time in this game have good attitudes and dont frustrate easily. They also are social and dont get worked up when being a victim to another pirate. If you can enjoy being chased. If you enjoy other people (who are the other characters in this game..better than a NPC any day if you ask me) You might like this game. Best game I have played in years but thats just my opinion.
I think you are really asking what we find interesting in the game. I think I love it because of it is like a theater, you are the actor and you discover the plot of story as you play. You can be a hero or a villain, or not, sometimes you're just a bit player. When you sign on you never know, you just play your part as you see fit and let the chips fall where they may.

This forum has been gradually shifting into full on echo chamber mode.Decries intellectual snobbery, implies snobs are playing like puppies, toddlers and chimps. Hmmm.
If my post above gave you cause for such an outburst, then I'll stress that I see no intellectual quality at all to liking or disliking this game. What I would say is, however, that the simple unwillingless you display is rather lame: not to like the game, but to understand why others might.
You may not like it, and be justified in doing so as per your standards and interests. Others might like it, and be justified in doing so as per their standards and interests. Deal with it.
This, furthermore, is distinct from the behaviour of some on forums.
@dh-kustom I´ll bite.
Getting griefed - I have been around since alphas and I have been griefed probably around 1-3 times. And i solo sloop a lot. So I agree continuous griefing is an issue, but only for some people for some odd reason.
Skeleton fort is not worth of time - sure its not, I am not even sure gaming in general is. But for argument's sake, have you tried destiny events? or some other game like that? Kinda pointless am i right? Its gonna get philosophical right now... what is worth your time?
grinding - its grinding when you choose to grind. Seriously, I grinded skulls and it was horrible. Then I found a crew casually doing OOS... and it wasnt grinding it was an adventure. its down to the state of the mind and willingness.
in conclusion, the game is mainly about the stories you create yourself and with your crew. Solo play is not that rewarding and even might punish you sometimes - its more of an advanced mode, when you are sure you can hide, run and plunder with efficiency.
