Burying your treasure

  • For thematic and useful reasons I would like for us to be able to bury our own treasures. The mechanic should be fun for pirates that wants to hide treasure for a later day and for pirates that want to discover and steal other pirates booty.

The idea goes like this. You alt click (several times) with your shovel a suitable location to create a big hole. You can now drop a number of treasures (chests, goods & skulls) but not live stock in to the hole. By selecting the option to cover the ground is smoothed out and each member of the crew get a treasure map to the location. The ground shows signs of disturbance (on this server only) so other may dig it up if they try for an hour or so.

Each crew members keeps their map between sessions until the treasure is dug up, but the catch is that a copy of the map goes into a queue and can now be found by everybody as a message in a bottle map on any server. As soon as it has been dug up then all copies of that treasure either turns blank or will only contain a cast away chest.

Players can use this to save their "progress" in a thematic way that won't disrupt the PVP element and generous pirates can hide huge treasures for other players to find and you can show the map to other players as per usual. This means that a found map can now lead to a huge jackpot or a castaway chest.

When you die by the hand of a player you drop a copy of the map.

I also like the 15 men on dead mans chest aspect that if you bury a treasure together with a crew you do not fully trust you don't know if they will dig it up without you.

You can also use the map in a trade: showing/dropping the map in trade for help in an event or for buying a ship.

  • I'm sure someone will come up with a problem with this idea, but I think it's fantastic (other than the nitpicky part of me that insists I point out that 99% of pirates did not bury treasure).

Only issue other than maybe why? Would be digging it back up. Server would have to store the location for a lot.of people, what if more than person buried same spot. How would you limit it, wouldn't it be less work to just sell it than unload it all on to a beach?
I'm not against the idea in principal. Just not sure implantation in the current game would work. Id rather a base to store my loot lol...maybe your base starts as just the hole and gets built around it.

  • @dragonsire2016 that is a good point about the server concerns. As for why...there have been plenty of times I let treasure just dissapear because I didn't have the time to get it back to an outpost, or stayed on much longer than I should have to get loot back. Also, if you are being chased, you could sail by the next island you have a mission on, the whole crew chooses a piece of loot, and everyone slips off the ship and sneaks to the island. If your pursuers continue to follow your ship you could bury what you brought as well as what you get on the island, and return for it later. And most importantly it would be a fun mechanic, especially if you could give the maps to others.

  • @isaac-occam Personally I think this would be good for hiding things from crews that are pursuing you and your unable to get to a outpost. The other thing this could be good for is skull fort keys. Having one onboard when someone knows you have it is nerve racking but to give them the slip and hide it would give them the impression its been lost.

  • I love this idea other than keeping the map between sessions. If we log out without turning in our treasure, we lose that treasure currently. It's incentive to not be idle and get kicked and to make sure you turn everything in before quitting. That being said, the hoard becoming a message in a bottle is perfect for when crews leave their hoard by logging off. My only question is, when d*****g, would one chest at a time appear, or would they all pop up at once?

  • @william-flint not trying to start anything whatsoever but no need to be nitpicky in a game like this, im 99% sure that the megladon died out millions of years even before the golden age of piracy, I think it would be a fun little mechanic lol :)

  • @catqeen1234 All at once - like a jack pot.

As for servers. It would take one data base row per piece of treasure and one row per crew mate. And they should just remove the oldest hoards from the database if the load gets too big.

Different crews can bury their treasure at the same spot. Each treasure hoard can only be dug up if you posses the specific map personally. You can't just go around and dig in random places, just as with ordinary GH voyages.

You don't save any time by burying the booty in the long run. It takes about the same time to put in a hole as to lug it to a Gold Hoarder and you still have to come back another time to dig it up again. But on the short run, you can just head to the nearest island and bury it there. This is handy if you need to log out as soon as possible.

  • i said that we should do that when we become legend its been mentioned at least once on a podcast or some sea of thieves video they just dont know how it would work out nobody likes being robbed and having buried treasure robbed might be to much

  • @ajm123 True nobody likes being robbed. But that is what pirates did, they robbed people at sea and dug up and stole other peoples treasures.

Burying our own treasures only keeps it safe for some time. Its a risk/reward situation. You need to get it back before somebody else does. That's the thrill of it.

Think of the classic scene from Treasure Island where Ben Gunn digs up the hoard and hides it somewhere else.

  • I'm with you except the across all servers thing. I think as soon as you leave the current server the map goes in the bottle queue. And maybe only have the ability to bury one item at a time but multiple on the same island up to maybe 10 (typical XmtS map) and any more burials on other islands would create a new map.

This would be great for solo sloopers as you could dump your ship if chased and bury your most valuable loot on a close island. Maybe not drop the map on death so as to not promote KoS mentality but on death it goes into the bottle queue and you'll have to race and dig it up before someone else gets there first.

I like that twist. That would also give showing it voluntarily more meaning.

  • @thecageddeath Oh I agree that it would be fun. Didn't mean to imply that it shouldn't be part of the game just because it wasn't accurate, just couldn't help myself.

I believe under current mechanics you can show an X marks the Spot map to another player but without the map in their inventory they couldn't dig it up themselves. But now a chest that has been started can be finished dug up by a player without the map.

maybe have it so you can drop the map on their voyage table and give another crew the map that way. Although that may create a problem if two crew have the same voyage. I'm not a coder.
