Evasive Manuevers

  • Re-posted from another thread (with a few minor changes for context), because I think it might help out a lot of you:

Despite being an Insider, Founder, and Pioneer and having played since the closed alpha, I had a personal revelation the other day.

You see, I often cried about our PC opponent's advantages, and to some degree, I still do - just not as much as I used to. Some players can seemingly move faster, but I realized that it wasn't always because of M&K or even what platform they might have been on - it was likely because of something they knew that I didn't, despite my experience, or in this particular instance, lackthereof.

So, what was this personal revelation, you ask? Well, to be honest, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it, but I'm sharing it here because while many of you may already know about it, I'm also certain that, like me, many of you don't know about it.

    So, WHAT IS IT!?

In a word - dodging. Nowhere in the controls or tutorial does it show you how to do this (BTW, devs - it should 😉), but while holding your cutlass, all you have to do is block. Then while blocking, press any direction and jump at the same time. Doing this causes you to "evade" in the direction you pressed. It looks like a shallow hop with decent range, and has a 1 second cool-down time. The best part? It can be used in ANY direction, even forward in an offensive manner.

A friend showed me this, and it blew my mind that I never figured this out on my own (and I'm an adult!), and I'd like to know if I just did the same for you. That said, if you already knew about this, then good for you (just be polite, and don't rub it in)!

The reason I bring this up is because there are multiple factors at play, and ignorance is 1 of them. I thought many pirates that were besting me might've been on PC with M&K, but in truth, they may have just been dodging all along. Don't be ignorant - do your research, consider all of the options, figure things out, and when you think you've exhausted them all, then make your case, argument, or complaint.

Good luck upon the waves, and GG, from GG! ✌😅 🌊☠

  • Uhm I'm pretty sure everyone knows this. I don't really know how to ask this politely but how the heck did you not know this if you've played the game for so long? Even by accident I would imagine you'd have discovered it long ago lol

@galactic-geek also if you take a swing while holding block and moving, you'll take a quick step in whichever direction you're moving. It's good for stepping around a block and getting a side hit.

Yep, didn't know about that either - I tried it, and it's so subtle! I did some experimenting and also learned that if you swap weapons while blocking, you'll quickdraw your firearm into an aiming position, which makes for a great surprise attack! 😆

I didn't know because I always strafed in an attempt to get around them, and rarely blocked because even with a successful block, they still recovered too quickly. Also, for the record, I looked for these and similar mechanics way back during the alpha, but thought it would be somehow more intuitive, like pressing a direction while attacking (which does very little, if anything). I also saw no mention of these moves anywhere here on the forums, on other sites, in videos, or in-game...

  • There are tons of movement tricks you can take advantage of when using the sword. For example if you hold block and then attack, you will be able to move at normal speed before the first swing. And the same goes if you block before initiating a charge attack; you will be able to move freely while charging up ( and even jump ;);) )

Another thing i use a lot is sprinting and then jumping towards an enemy and attacking with the sword while in the air, this allows you to maintain momentum from the jump and gain distance while the sword hit animation is happening. Especially useful if someone is trying to run away!

And lastly, jump a lot! I dont know if its as easy with an xbox controller, but if you jump and slash someone from above, your hit will sometimes go through their block!

  • @galactic-geek

Blocking is extremely useful, they do recover fast but sometimes that distance it creates with blocking the third slash is just what you need to disengage and eat a banana or reposition.

  • @galactic-geek there are tons of videos on combat mechanics, especially sword tips. You really should block more, it is extremely effective.

  • @kzoo-kid Another reason I didn't use block often was because it only works in the front, which makes it easy to sidestep. Ironically, it's probably this very reason why I didn't explore further - strafing beat block, and turning beat sidestep, so that's what I did...

  • @galactic-geek The main reason why PC players can "evade" faster is because they can turn WAY faster than console players. Movement definitely isn't their biggest advantage(which is aiming), but it's still better than console. I don't think that the sword really a factor? I play this game on console and I can make myself pretty much "un-shoot-able"(to console players), if I want by just holding down sprint and jumping around like a madman. Characters in this game are VERY fast and maneuverable compared to other FPS games.

  • @betsill I'm aware of all of that - it's why, in the past, I've suggested that PC players turn speed be reduced and/or have a brief cooldown time after a jump before you're able to jump again. That said, the sword mechanics do help mitigate some of that, now that I know they exist.

  • @galactic-geek The jump cooldown is a good idea for this game I think. I'm not a big fan of fortnight, but they implemented a jump cooldown and it did a great job of cutting down on the jumping madness.
