Default white flag!?

  • I use the flag more often than the wind lines to judge the direction of the wind, and sometimes I like to jump in a ship and set sail without worrying about ship customisation and what flag I'm flying, but when I look up there is no flag, I have to climb in the crows nest and choose one.

It's not a big gripe or request but it would be nice to have a default flag I think, up to the point that I decide to choose one.

Also, sailing a stock ship is some times a tactical or aesthetic choice too. So it would be nice if that choice included the 'default flag' instead of 'none'.

    Thoughts?

  • @themuckypaw I think the current set up is fine. Ship starts bare. Crew chooses what to fly. Every session is a little diff crew in my experience (unless of course yer solo)

    Which brings me to:

If you are a predominantly solo player what if before you set sail solo you have a pre made set up of what you want it to be (I personally use the same set up every single time)

It sure would save time for us solo peeps

  • This is a good idea, I like it.

  • @themuckypaw they could make it so you can change the flag in the top of the crows nest. or from the ship customisation chest. that would save some time when leaving the port. having a default flag kinda deletes the meaning of that flag. cause people with that flag could've just forgotton to change it.

  • @jorin33 reason for the crows nest placement of changing the flag is so you can change it no matter where at sea ye be

  • @dutchdeadschot that's why they should leave it in. but also add the option from the shipwright chest

  • @jorin33 possibly.

  • I kind of feel the same way. I have some issues reading the wind streams and use the flag by default. When I start at port adding a flag is the first thing I do, but when joining after they have left port, it's the first thing I do ;).

I wouldn't mind a default flag, maybe with the Sea of Thieves logo on it? I just accept it as something I have to do though.

  • @pumpkinkangaroo ahh, the sea of thieves skull as a flag! Nice!

  • Personally, I find it annoying to have to climb the crows nest before sailing at the start of every session, especially on the galleon. Default white flag should be on the ship, imo.

  • @jorin33 Yea but that's what default suggests, you either forget or choose not to set it. At the moment, 'no flag' is default, not choosing a flag means that, but I prefer the old option of white as default.

  • @dutchdeadschot I like the idea of a default 'set'. Or perhaps, like the weapons, it gives you the same as you had, last session.

  • @jorin33 When flags where introduced I expected them to be selectable from the shipwright, I was surprised that they weren't. Yea, leave the option to choose while sailing but yea it would be nice if we could choose from the shipwright too, or as @DutchDeadSchot suggests, have a default set to choose from that includes flag.

  • @themuckypaw yes (for solo players only would I want there to be a preset template to choose) makes sense I think

  • I think it's good like that...first way from the outpost for me is most times a Fort so i can fill up supplies and get gunpowder...then I put my flag there...

  • @themuckypaw That's kind of how it used to be when the game first went public. Right now I shrug at the fact that the company took out the default white flag. It's a tiny bother that I have to climb the mast to pick one, but I'm not too bothered by it.

FYI, I typically pick the Roger, Blue, or sometimes Black flag. Last night I flew the red one for the first time, and flew the Shark flag when flags first become an option.

  • @fantome-of-blue see I’m red only with admiral , founder, lion head, always. Like it never changes. Hence why a good idea would be pre selecting before setting sail

  • I think they need to move it to the front of the mast instead of having to climb up into the crows nest to change it. The whole point of raising the colors and if they can make it active at the top why not on the flag pole on the back of the ship as well. Or at least include an option to purchase a larger one for the rear flag pole other than just the smaller one a the top.

  • I guess. Climbing the mast to pick one isn't too much of a pain. I guess maybe being able to hoist a flag from the deck might be more convenient.

A lot of people never change the default flag. So it makes sense to start with none, because otherwise you do not know if the crew is peaceful or just too lazy to change the default flag.

  • @dutchdeadschot I sail solo and use the same setup each time, but it takes less than a minute to configure - even the flag.

  • @bran-the-ent no you would be correct. Just some suggestions (small tweaks) to improve the game overall.

Like if sailing with same setup every time

Why not have feature to select premade setup?

  • I always use flags but i i licke the non flag system. Because i first choose the paint for the ship and after that i choos the flag.
And some times the flag just dont look good with the paint of the ship.

  • @x1-two It's the same either way. Also never trust a pirate anyway. You should know that by now. ;D

  • @tranquilermine6 More colour options would be nice. If for example I use one of my fav colour schemes, the Royal Sovereign, which is green, there is no flag that matches. Like they did with the sails, there should be some plain colour options for the flags too.

  • @themuckypaw i woud like it if we woud have country flags. I mean switzerland woud be strange to sea at the high see but the flags already exist and i think the players woud like it.

(Sorry i dont can write good in english XD)

  • @tranquilermine6 wouldn’t be strange ter see de Dutch flag (or the Golden Age Dutch flag) either would be amazing

Or the Brits, or French, or Spanish.

It’d be fun. But I doubt Rare will. Just a feeling.

  • @tranquilermine6 Hmm, you know in principal I don't really disagree but it does open a whole new can of very slippery worms.

For example, the historic country that I was born in is often not recognised as an 'official' country by other games because it is part of the UK. I fear SoT might do the same, which would annoy me somewhat.

Also I am very much in agreement with Doug Stanhope when he said ... "Nationalism does nothing but teach you to hate people you never met, and to take pride in accomplishments you had no part in.”

I am not against flying country flags in general though, but it could be troublesome and not as inclusive as imagined.

  • @themuckypaw in my honest opinion, country flags are just another form of pride. Can we not take pride in who we are? Or who are families are? Idk just me

  • @dutchdeadschot There is nothing wrong with having pride in your own accomplishments and achievements but taking pride in having been accidentally born somewhere is not one I encourage.

I'd rather be a proud human, than a tribalist.

  • But I digress. We may be getting off topic.

  • @themuckypaw Oh I don't trust anyone in this game. The only time I interact with other crews is if I am on a fresh sloop without any active quests.

  • i didn't realize that it as a stripped post every time.

But doesn't the white flag mean surrender though?

But doesn't the white flag mean surrender though?

That's my thought process on this. I don't want to forget and people assume I'm approachable or anything silly like that.

  • As from the OP, the flag comes in reeeally handy when the wind lines are glitched and invisible. That was the ONLY point in the game that I actually paid attention to the penny flag.

However, as a 2nd party pirate, my eyes go to the main sails and not the tiny one, which I can't really see without the use of a scope. RARRRE even giving us the option to decorate seems to be a way to appease those of us who want more customization. Aye, it seems tiresome to have it install it every time but that point can also be made for the canvas.

If we members want to fight for a stagnant/default design on our pennants, I'd argue for our Fo'Rum badges to be those default pennants -- similarly to the tags that appear under our names in-game. We don't have to re-install them every time we go in game and represent our notoriety.
