Gamebreaking lag - please help

  • Hi, I'm getting this weird gamebreaking lag in the game on xbox one s.
It usually happens after playing for a few hours. I'm the only guy in the crew getting it so the rest of the crew can play on.

I'm still in the game, I can hear snippets of audio from my crew when I get a new frame on screen every 20-30 seconds.
The game is totally unplayable from my end but the crew has no issues. I still get gold when my crew sells loot even though my game is unresponsive.

It seems to be a game client issue. Everything else on the network is running fine and on the xbox except the game.
It seems more like a memory/buffer issue than actual network lag.
This is not the almondbeared (even though i get that as well but quite rare. 2 times so far this month).

One time I waited out the lag for 30 minutes and it was still going.
Another time the game started working again after 10 minutes but the game was glitchy with rendering issues and water above the ship and stuff and frame stuttering.

The rest i have not timed but i get these quite frequently (at least 4/10 gaming sessions end like this) and it's becoming really frustrating. I'll usually wait in the unresponsive session until the crew sells the loot and then restart the game.

Once i was in battle, other times it happened just before stopping at an outpost so it does not seem caused by many ships or players in the area.

But it does seem to happen in longer gaming sessions more, never in the 1st hour.

When this happens the menu is not available as well. The only option is to turn off the game from the xbox menu and start it again. After this the game works fine again.

I'm really loving the game and this issue is really begining to take a toll.

@Rare-Employee Please help Rare and anybody with suggestions on the matter!

  • @supremeleaderd no idea. I'm on one x and I got some weird jitter lag like that when I first logged in. my partner is on one s and she had to quit and close the game it got so bad. maybe the hungering one is getting close to the surface and disrupting the wifi?

  • I'm ruling out network issues at home. I keep the xbox cabled into the router.

Plus the rest of the xbox apps work fine when this happens. Went to the xbox store to see how quick stuff loads while the game was lagging and there was no issue. Other devices have no issue accesing the web while the game is lagging. Did a speed test on the phone and it worked well.

It might be the gaming session connection to the game server but I can't really diagnose that. The game client is still getting updates from the server cause I can see when the frame loads that my crew sold stuff and i have the gold up in the corner + the sell sound.

@IamWilliamB I wish it was just extra sharks hungering around and eating up the wifi instead of this issue.

  • @supremeleaderd

I'm sorry to hear you're encountering this issue, I'm a PC player myself and don't have any suggestions but I'm sure some of our Xbox brethren will be along soon with some ideas which may help.
It might be worth sending a report across via Support for some assistance.

  • @SupremeLeaderD If you're confident that it's not a networking issue on your end, it could be the hardware in your xbox itself, or the installation of SoT.

I would try doing a hard reset on your xbox, which you can find instructions on how to do online. I would then try uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

If all else fails you could do a factory reset on your xbox, which would suck as you'd have to download everything over again, but may clear up any underlying issues.

I would also recommend to make sure your xbox is well ventilated, and isn't overheating. If you're playing fine for a few hours and then it starts occurring, it could be the xbox overheating.

  • @supremeleaderd I wouldn't fully rule out network lag just yet. It might not be the source, but it might make things worse.

Doing a speedtest is one thing, but you need to look at how you are distributing your available bandwidth across your network. You're saying other devices on your network are working just fine. What is it that you're doing on these other devices? What other online games / services did you try on the xbox?

Now, again, this could very well be that your network is making things worse but isn't the root of the issue. So to make sure, delete the game and re-install it. See what happens.

    Going back to your network:

    1. What is your download and upload speed?
    2. What is your ping to the closest network station, as per speedtest.net
  • @murkrage I'll do some test later today. I've got 50mbps network it have the xbox cabled into the router, same as the tv. No issues on cable running netflix and stuff.
Speed tests from the wifi download at around 48-49 mbps. Brand new router.

I've not had problems with any other of my online games that i currently play on the xbox: rocket league / fortnite /battlefront 2 and SOT usually runs fine for at least 1 hour, usually longer until this issue kicks in.

@Daddy-Sanctus I don't think overheating is the problem either. It doesn't feel hot, it's well ventilated and while the game is breaking, playing with the xbox menu overlay, or going to the xbox store is as fast as always.

I think i'll try an reinstall tonight see if it helps.
    Thanks for the suggestions everybody.

  • @supremeleaderd I had this isue occur the other day on my OG XB1 - during a long play session, the framerate dropped like an anvil, to ~1 frame every 10 seconds (if that) until I turned off the game a full 10 minutes later...

Keep me updated if you figure out the cause and/or solution!

  • @supremeleaderd let me know what happened after testing a bit more, just tag me. I’d like to know and will gladly help you further :)

You can also add me on Xbox, same name as my username here, so we can keep in touch a fair bit easier.

  • @Murkrage tested the speed from the xbox browser 18 ping 51 mbps dwld 19.74 mbps upld.

Did a reinstall. Played the game Got to a skullfort. Got 3 lag spikes that lasted under 3 minutes each and then almondbeard.

Not sure if it's the same issue. The lag behaviour was the same but it was short lived. The original issue would last for longer and not give almondbeard. or happen this quickly in the play session.

    Will see what happens next.

@Galactic-Geek not sure if the reinstall helped.

    Will keep you guys posted.

  • Its not just you lot on xbox dealing with this issue. Since the hungering deep update I've had nothing but massive lag spikes. Hardwired into my 250mbps up/12mbps dl, I have zero issues in anything else. Doesn't matter if I'm streaming or not, or have anyone else in the house utilizing the network or not these spikes present themselves frequently enough to cause issues while playing. It really does seem to be an issue either with the servers or our ability to connect to the servers. If my group, it is myself that sees the worst of the spikes, but at least one other has had them occur around the same time as myself.

  • All of us are getting it after the H.D. update. P.C. and XBox. Often times the P.C. players will be okay for a bit, but the XBox players have to restart.

  • I think the reinstall helped. I'm getting some lag spikes here and there but not the gamebreaking lag that i used to get.

  • @supremeleaderd you're not alone! I experienced this issues sometimes and it started well before THD. If you're are in a closed crew, my only work around is to restart the game and join your friend. I know other Xbox players who experienced the same issues but not my PC friends.
I think it's happenning when other players are around me or the islands don't load well :(
