Skeleton Fort Key

  • Recently had this happen...I show up to a fort just as the cloud skull vanishes, a single player in a sloop texts me good luck finding the key. I pursue the sloop and leave a crew member to search the fort. The fort is locked. No key to be found. After about 10 minutes of pursuit and taunts from the sloop the sloop sinks and the player texts they have left the server.

My question is will the key return to the fort? Will it stay where it was left, if so how long? Is this bad sport behavior? Is there a time limit to unlock the fort?

  • They are trolling you, they can’t text you they left the server while being on the server.

Prob took key with them on the ship or dumped the key on another island and simply waited until you were gone from fort to open the vault.

  • @aaronblueeyes actually they used Xbox text so yes they can text after leaving server also my crew member stayed at fort for about 30 minutes til I returned

If they did return it was after 45 minutes...that is my question ... Is there a time limit to open the fort vault?

  • @simplkindoman No you can carry the keys for a long time. And have another fort pop well the other one is still not opened. I have done it numerous times when people where camping the fort. I would just go do other things and come back later.

They other thing is they can swim to an island with key and go back there after they make you think the ship was sunk. I'm sure the key despawns after a while if no one has touched but never tested that yet.

I would say they did not leave the server at all just trolled you. Ive had it done to me. We waited hidden near the fort for them to come back then rush them. Yes I know its a waist of time but sometimes you want the revenge.

  • @canadianmuscle3 lol I spent nearly an hour and after that they earned it. I was just hoping Rare had the foresight to code in a time limit. But you say you held a key for over 3 hours...WOW!

  • @simplkindoman Yep one of my crew has the screen shot to prove it. Holding the key in the crows nest well the other fort pops. We didn't think it was possible so we rushed back and all the loot was still there. Score for us. all the people waiting around it all left to the new fort.

We just did out Athena missions well we waited because when you are a legend you don't care about it. You just experiment ad get the really see the deep possibilities of this game when your not worrying about xp.

  • @canadianmuscle3 Ever try an old fort key on a new one?

  • @simplkindoman Not yet. But we have plans to mess around with fort keys trying different things ;) We haven't had the stars align just right for us to try it yet when we log on.

I would definitely be interested in what would happen using the old key on the new fort...(imagine if the skull stays up in the sky lol) You probably already know this, but you can actually see through the floor of the big room in the fort and see some of what's behind the door. (so don't waste time opening the forts without the skull)

  • @canadianmuscle3 Thanks for the insight👊

  • @gu1tarpunk41 I've never heard of a fort not having a fort skull

    Hi there,

The key will remain where it is dropped for a little while but will not return to the fort. There is a limited time to unlock a skull fort so after a while it will disappear. If someone picks up the key and logs out the key will disappear as it is currently, and yes that is bad sportsmanship.

I hope this answers your questions.

Then I asked what was true does it have a time limit or can you posses it a long time as stated by players.

Sorry I misunderstood the key wont vanish if it has been picked up I thought you meant if it was left on the ground.

I hope this answers your question.

  • It sucks when it happens, but you didn't earn that key bro. I'm sure he sunk it to the bottom of the ocean. Not bad sport Behavior. If they seen your name it's not hard to remember it and then type it in to send a message. On the server or not.

  • I had a crew hide the key we spent 2 hours looking before we found it.

  • best of my knowledge chests and items despawn from the island 4 hours after they have been left there, I forget where exactly I read this but multiple people have the same thoughts. Another thing to think about is dumping loot into the water.. items dropped in the water sink much much faster ... within 15 minutes i think. also certain items sink faster than others. If they are close enough to shore we have recovered items from the ocean floor but if your out too deep say good bye... one more thing is that once items start to descend you cannot pick them up until they hit the floor. This part may have been updated as we haven't tested it in a while.

But anyway they def just hid it somewhere else so you would give up faster. how would you know they left the server for sure? I could scuttle and make it look that way

Not true. You can still grab an item as it is sinking, and it's actually helpful to do this because it "resets" the sink time on that item. Say you sink a ship and there is a horde of treasure floating in the water. If you cant pick it all up fast enough it will start to sink. All you do is swim underwater, grab the item, then let go of it, and it will rise back to the water's surface. I've done this many times to keep loot from sinking while I am loading stuff onto the boat.

  • @jonaldinho good to know, we've only came across this once against an incoming galleon that we sunk.. we finished the skull fort and then went out about 100 feet and one skull had begun sinking. We couldnt pick it up at all until it settled on the sea floor. this was from maybe 2 months ago though so who knows.. maybe they fixed that issue

  • @Vapor1080 Hmm, maybe that happens if you let it sink too deep? I'm not sure. I am usually pretty quick to swim down and grab an item that I see sinking so I've never really let them sink very far. I'd be interested to hear what Rare says about this. Either way, they both seem like a bug.

  • @jonaldinho i think I'm going to put a ticket in for explanation of despawn times. because there's a lot of theories out there and nothing really confirmed from what I have found.

When this happened to us I'd say it was in 100 feet of water and the skulls were midway descended.

Is there a time limit to use the Fort key?

    Tartansnake 8

@simplkindoman - If so I'm yet to encounter it, I've held onto a key for over 3hrs.

Wee tip; if you have a key and a new fort activates, you can run in and loot it. It'll leave the skull cloud active so if you're quick enough you'll be left alone as you leave as approaching ships will not know you have the loot.

  • @simplkindoman said in Skeleton Fort Key:

I was referencing the skull in the sky above it when it is "active"... You can use the key on a fort that is not currently the "active" one, but the room when it is unlocked will have nothing inside of it... To be sure that you are at a fort with actual loot still behind the locked door you can look down while in the big circular room and see through the wood cracks some of the loot... That way you don't just waste the key...

Also, your gamertag references one of the best songs ever made.

  • @gu1tarpunk41 Regarding my tag, yes I agree, kinda why I chose it🎸

  • Key lasts about 3 hours.
