PC V-Sync Issue

  • Hello.
I have an i5 and a gtx 1080. I play at 4k resolution and with V-Sync off I have 45-60 fps and never below that which is absolutely fine but when I set V-Sync to on, fps dip into 30s and suddenly goes to 60 and vice versa.
With V-Sync off it is very smooth but I have screen tearing So i prefer it on. I have to mention that I play at 4k TV , I dont have a G-Sync monitor.
I hope it will be fixed.

  • @xartemporas v-sync have sense when you have a stable 60fps. if your pc can't reach 60fps whole time you'll have a screen tearing. it is normal. That is why v-sync is trying to lock on 30fps and sometimes changes to 60 when your pc performance is better in some places.

  • @avecrux
I know how it works, but my machine can handle it at 45+ fps so it should run that way with vsync on as other games in my system do. The dips at 30's happen when in game V-Sync is broken. I have seen it on other games too.
When I had a radeon card I used RadeonPro program to force v-sync and it worked fine with games which had broken v-sync.

I think that companies do this so as to push people to buy free sync or g-sync monitors.. But they are expensive and small for my taste. I prefer to play on my 49'' 4k TV. It is more enjoyable.

  • @xartemporas i don't have any issues with V-sync. I've got 80fps+ but locked it at 60 to prevent screen tearing. As I said - buy more ram/ ssd/ better CPU to have 4k 60fps

  • @avecrux What are your specs ? and which resolution do you use ? I know what you say but it should work with 45+ fps with vsync on because my PC can handle this(I have ssd)as many other games I play, do. It should not dip into 30 when it is 45. Sot in game V-Sync needs fix.
I dont care if it is stable 60, at 45-60 I am fine.

  • @xartemporas you are missing a definition of how v-sync works.

    You'd get a new frame every 16.67ms (1/60'th of a second) with a 60hz vsync lock

If any frame is slower than that, it can't be displayed until the next window which is 2x 16.67ms (1/30'th of a second)

Vsync only cares if there is a new frame ready for the next refresh but your FPS meter is averaging a time period that is 60x longer. If you got no frames at all for half a second it would still say 30fps even though you had 0 frames for the first half of the second and 30 frames in the second half, that's not very representative of in-the-moment smoothness.

On a frame by frame basis a single slightly missed frame would appear and feel like having 60fps, suddenly "30fps" for one frame and then 60fps again with no in between

If you count all of the frames in the last second then there will have been 59 frames - 58 of them came at "60fps" and the last one at "30fps". The FPS meter will say 59.

With Vsync each frame can only be displayed on a new refresh so the effective frametime for each individual frame has to be a factor of the refresh rate. At 60hz the most relevant ones are 1/60'th of a second (every refresh), 1/30'th of a second (every second refresh), 1/20'th of a second (every third refresh) and 1/15'th of a second (every fourth refresh). The gap between 60 and 30 when you slightly miss a 60hz refresh is the most brutal.

v-sync doesn;t care that you want to have a 60hz refresh rate if your rig can't handle this

  • @avecrux Thanks for technical analysis. But how other games work fine on my system with V-Sync on? COD, Dark souls, Dying light, Gta.. (45+ fps) and many more.

*in Sot I have 45-80fps with v-sync off

  • Just run it in 1080p or lower the settings. I would opt for 1080p on your system.

  • Sea of Thieves had a bug where when v-sync is enabled at certain islands cpu and gpu utilization drops to 50% and FPS drops to 30.

You can circumvent this by disabling v-sync in Sea of Thieves and changing vertical sync to fast in the nvidia control panel.

  • @sanni I thought it would be something like that..
Ok thanx, but with fast v-sync screen tearing will remain, right ?

  • @warmedxmints I have a gtx 1080 and I play at 60hz. If I would like to play at 1080p I would have bought a 1060.. I have 45-80 fps at 4k which is absolutely fine for me. I am ok with 60hz and I dont want more so lower settings or resolution isnt a solution for me. V-sync should work better in this game and that is for sure. 45+fps is just fine for me.

  • Screen tearing should still be removed with fast sync. Maybe not as perfectly as with vsync. A good island to test is Crook's Hollow at night or in the storm. Edit: The massive Crook's Hollow frame drops seem to be fixed at first glance.

If you want to play at 4k, you should of gone with a 1080ti tbh and ideally at least an i7. You have to accept that your system isn't capable of running this game @ 4k with the settings you want to play it at. When you have a mid to hid end gaming PC, you shouldn't really accept anything below 60fps. I don't know how anyone does tbh. If a game drops below 60 for me, it feels sluggish , laggy and looks jarring.

With the art style of this game, it really doesn't look much different in 4k to 1080p tbh. I've run it in both. Just try it in 1080p, it cannot hurt.

  • @warmedxmints yes 1080ti is better for 4k but it is too expensive. Even for the 1080 I was saving and saving for some time to buy it. I am fine with 45+fps my problem is that v-sync does not work very well in this game. It is not my hardware's fault that makes the frames goes from 45 to 30 or from 60 to 30..

As for cpu, I dont think that an i7 is essential for 4k gaming , with i5 you are fine, too because when you set higher resolution cpu utilization decreases and gpu utilization increases. With a good GPU you are absolutely fine with i5 at 4k.
Think that I have an i5 750 from 2009(!) oced to 4ghz and 8gb ram 1333 and 4k performance is decent. I dont think that you must spend a ton of money to play 4k.. Companies always want money but we must take care of our pocket, too.

45-80 fps and it is not capable with these settings ? ok... I say again , the problem is v-sync. If it is off it is 45+ whout any drops..

    Running the game on PC
    CPU intel 6850k
    GPU MSI 1080ti
Max graphics at 2560 x 1080 I get 70 fps average on or around islands, while out sailing in the middle of the water 144fps with v-sync on with my monitor or 160-180ish without it on. The game has crashed on me once since launch, besides the annoying game bug here and there most of which fix themselves if you die and respawn. I've honestly had a pretty stable experience so far, everyone's PC is different and comes with thier own stability or instability. Thou I do wish my fps didn't get cut in half around or on islands that so far is my only real complaint performance wise. ""

  • @warmedxmints with v- sync OFF in game and setting it to fast from NVidia control panel, game run Flawlessly at 4k and max settings. 50+ fps and 60 average without any screen tearing..

Lol, that's not flawless though. My system maintains 60fps with vsync on. Fast sync is designed for when you can run a game above twice the refresh rate of your monitor. When you are getting below 60fps, it is time to reduce the settings.

  • @warmedxmints LOL! It is not flawless.. oook. Your opinion.
With Fast vsync it works absolutely fine. E.g at the tavern I had 30 fps(playable but according to you not playable, so Xbox one X is for the garbage can which plays this game at 30fps...) with vsync on and now I have 50! 20fps more just with setting vsync to fast. At the ferry of the damned I had 30fps and now I have 60! When I sail I always have constant 60. So something is wrong with sot's v-sync.

IN GAME V-SYNC IS NOT WORKING AS IT SUPPOSED TO BE. Gta, dark souls, forza, hitman and many many more work well with v-sync on at about 50+ fps at 4k. Why this game cant ?

I have to reduce settings because I have 50+ fps and most of the time 60fps ??

Flawless or not it is your personal opinion. I have another opinion.

We dont have anything more to dicuss here.

    not flawless... L O L
