Teammates for megalodon.

  • This event is a joke. An absolute joke. I was looking forward to this first content update so much and I can not describe how angry and dissappointed I am. The riddle and the quest were great fun, the drum is cool, but I haven't got to fight the megalodon yet and I likely won't get the chance now (I'm very busy with work this week and the event is out for 2 weeks? I know the megalodon is still going to be out after that but I want to actually finish the complete quest line including summoning the megalodon with the drums)...

It is ridiculous that Rare expect multiple crews to meet up and work together without providing a system to help that happen. I finished the quest with two friends yesterday and we have been searching the ocean for several hours searching for other people to play with.. as obviously you need at least 5 people to summon it! We have gone for long periods of time without meeting anyone, but when fortunate enough to see another ship and try to approach here is what we have encountered:

    • Tried to approach a sloop, used the megaphone and voice chat, and typed whilst approaching them, saying we were friendly and were just looking for people to fight the megalodon with. We caught up to the sloop, it turned and ran, said nothing, just ran, complete 180. I was calling to it 'hey we won't hurt you but would you like to do this boss with us?' no reply just full speed away..

    • Next ship we come across was a sloop again, the sloop let us (a galleon) sail alongside and I started talking by typing and voice chat (I like to use both in case they aren't using voice chat) and they ignored us. They literally sailed alongside us while we were very confused until we reached an outpost... he got off and ran into the outpost... ok perhaps he has loot and is scared? I jumped ashore and watched him and he just stood there doing nothing. Then he gets his gun out and points it at me. All the time I'm saying look I'm friendly! and typing it too... he just runs around pointing his gun at me and ignoring me... so I give up..

    • Next person we actually have a little communication with but I think he was an Xbox player, could only use preset chat and didn't have voice chat. It became very apparent that he hadn't completed or even started the quest. Didn't have the drums. And so couldn't help us.

    • Next we found a galleon at an outpost. We were very excited, plenty of people hopefully? And at least one of them must have voice chat or be able to type a bit more right? We got there, the ship was empty. I ran around the island and finally found one player... and he did have voice chat.. 'oh just wait' he said, and he ran away. I have no clue what he was doing and I could see none of his crewmates. So there we are, two galleons (me and my friend, and this random dude), and then a sloop approaches us. I signal to him too and ask if he wants to help. Long story short, not a single person has voice chat, and they ignore me when I type a question. They run around, using their cannons to fire themselves from ship to ship, like they've never played the game before... running around like children.. I'm trying to ask 'look does anyone want to help us fight the megalodon?'... then two people use their drums.. so I'm like ah great! Do you two wanna join us?! They type yes, then continue to run around like headless chickens... so I'm like 'ok which ship did you come from the sloop or the galleon?' (I'm trying to get an idea of exactly who and what is in our fleet which is forming).. and they ignore me... so this goes on 2-3 minutes me trying to get someone to discuss with and have a conversation with.. then I hear a cannon shot and a smash, and someone on the galleon has started firing looads of shots at our galleon... I'm like what the hell dude stop! Then the sloop does the same.. and to be honest I just think screw this, and log off. I will not be logging onto SoT again any time soon, it's a waste of time, and I am so disappointed.. I was looking forward to fighting the megalodon but I cannot believe how unrealistic the requirements are to summon it..

It takes forever to find other people on the sea and when you do they haven't complete the quest, or they ignore you, or they can't use voice chat or type and you get yes/no answers and then they run around like morons... why is it so hard to find people who are on the same wavelength? I love the game and so will come back in the future but if Rare want to use this format to introduce an AI threat again in the future for the love of god add a mechanic which HELPS players to find others who want to fight the threat. Don't rely on people randomly 'meeting other people' and them all having completed the quest etc..

I have never EVER played a game which relies on people to sail around in the HOPES of encountering other people who most of the time run away. I don't have any idea how far the voice from the megaphone reaches and how far away it can be heard, or how far away a ship has to be before they can read your typed chat.. it is so difficult to get the people together and to be honest when I do have game time, I'm going to be spending it on other games at the moment..

Oh and something else! We encountered a lot of solo sloops! I mean that's not helpful at all when we want to do the boss.... nothing against solo players but almost all sloops seem to have 1 person on.... it's so irritating when you are trying to find a decent number of people to play with...

  • We do need a rally point and it does seem like a bunch of children are on lately. I usually think of those who don't reply in a couple of ways, either they don't speak English and can't read actions or they are children who's parents have restricted chat. That may be generous, but it makes it less frustrating.

For the weekend at least we will be hanging around the Ridge and see if we can't manage to earn our scars. If enough of us just sit the Ridge then we should find a group. We want to complete the task but honestly it's become our mission to help others do it. If we are having this much trouble then others are too.

Also the megaphone has a decent range. I've only had one other crew use it right (I had thought I was doing something wrong) but they were on an island while we were off a ways and we were able to communicate just fine. I've also seen the text chat a ways off so we should be able to communicate if only we could all get on the same page.

  • I feel you. This weekend is/was my only real window to tackle the actual fight. My friend and I managed to finish it last night after trying three different servers. Server hopping should NEVER be the recommended mechanic to an event such as this. Everyone says to just use discord or the forums or xbox groups or whatever...I shouldn't have to use outside services for this. Maybe it makes sense to gamers nowadays who have fingers in all those pies but it boggles my mind.

The battle was great and I would do it again with little persuasion but it was rough trying to get the stars to align. We started at about 7pm and finally finished it at 2 in the morning...we considered a SoT hiatus when on the second server we asked a galleon if they were interested in helping us and it led to being attacked and name calling and somehow the island being blockaded by two hostile galleons...

I won't deny anyones right to pvp even if it means taking advantage of a situation like this but I will question the implementation of the event that allows a playstyle to hinder content under a timed window.

I know pvp can be seen as a hindrance to casual/pve gameplay but I feel like on the standard that is part of the thrill/difficulty but in a special event like this they should strive to avoid that and get as many people to experience it as possible if not for us then for themselves. They put all this work into content and then restrict it with survival of the fittest. Why add content at all at that point?

  • @john-hatter I've been on night shifts this week so today/yesterday was my first opportunity and we spent a few hours completing the quest which was fun but when it came to the boss fight it's almost impossible to find others...

'I won't deny anyones right to pvp even if it means taking advantage of a situation like this but I will question the implementation of the event that allows a playstyle to hinder content under a timed window.'

Perfectly expressed :) And yes it's restricted to survival of the fittest and also survival of whoever is prepared to put the ridiculous number of hours into the game to be fortunate enough to get enough people to fight it..

  • @angrycoconut16
Ugh and don't get me started on this 'two weeks is plenty of time' that floats around. Juggling my day to day with a 3 year old and other duties and I only get one, maybe two windows to attempt it and that's on the weekend(assuming family plans aren't made)...a week(ish) after the event launched and everyone finished it on day one....

  • @john-hatter The thing is, a lot of people finished it day 1 but not everyone did - there are plenty of people out there like you and me, but Rare ought to make it easier for us to find each other. I'd love to fight it with you if you wanted to do it, but there is no system in the game for helping people who want to do the megalodon find each other. Obviously this wasn't a problem on the first couple of days when everyone was on and wanted to do it, but only a few days after.. and it's near impossible..

  • I've gotten lucky. I had 3 galleons and a sloop helping last night, but a 5th ship showed up just to troll and crashed into everyone, then bombed one of the boats. We still killed the shark tho.

  • @angrycoconut16 yes one friend and me we need people to defeat the megalodon

  • rare wants people to solo megalodon apparently, good luck with that endeavour

  • @urihamrayne That made me laugh! I am sure there is one out there, there always is, but they first need a team to summon it! As it stands we all seem to be searching on different servers.

  • I was going to to do a similar rant, bu thnx for saving me the trouble. Truly what a demoralizing experience it was to actually try and find a crew willing to help you summon this thing. It's way too much of a dice roll to simply get the opportunity to face it. I know some are more lucky than me, but it's pretty messed up that some of us have only been able to see it in youtube videos.

  • @angrycoconut16 I've done the Meg fight a bunch of times to help others get it done,
I've been hearing that damn shanty in my dreams at this point.

One of the times (imo the most fun time) we had to chase down a random solo sloop for 20mins and beat him into submission until he agreed to join us. After all that another 2 sloops arrive looking to kill the Megalodon lol. Afterwards we all went to a tavern to get drunk together. Fun times!

I hope you find some people to help you!

  • @pyranna87 What on earth? You had to chase a sloop and order him to help you? Am I missing something here or are you joking? I don't know what you mean by 'beat him into submission'

  • @angrycoconut16 We chased him down while using the trumpet to shout we are friendly, we need your help etc, boarded his ship, shot him dead when he tried to resist. Eventually he got the message that we were his new masters and agreed to help. He got a laugh out of it in the end.

  • @pyranna87 That is so lame, I hope I never meet people like you on the ocean... let the guy do what he wants for heavens sake....

  • @angrycoconut16 What a debbie downer.. He had fun! If you can't see the funny side of that then maybe it's just better that you don't mix with other players

  • @angrycoconut16 Yes my crew had the same issues that you have been having but we persisted and finally found another galleon crew that were willing to work together, all i can say is keep trying, it took us 7hrs to find a non aggressive crew and only really about an hour to actually kill the Meg.

  • I got really lucky and found a galleon crew who helped me all the way even though they'd already done it. They even managed to get another galleon to join us but after the battle they attacked us not that it was an issue as they were sunk. I think perhaps the event should be a month rather than two weeks. My best advice would be to make a thread, a looking for group post (Xbox) or use discord. There are decent people willing to help but its just finding them. I think only the drum and the load hailer are exclusive the tattoo's, figure head and scar isn't exclusive as you get those by killing the Hungering One and as its staying in the game it stands to reason they are as well.

I have plenty of people willing to join us! Even @AngryCoconut16 and I have added each other as friends. The issue is finding other ships. You can post "looking for" a million times and in a million places an never actually get on the same server. I have enough friends, but I also have empty servers.

  • @pumpkinkangaroo To be fair I reckon one galleon could defeat it as it has predictable AI behaviour. It circles your ship then a music cue will sound and it will bite the ship causing damage and people nearby to get hurt and be flung on ship. I found when it attacked simply go below deck and start repairing damage then continue attacking it. It may take about 10mins or so doing this but assuming you can co-ordinate with your team and have enough supplies you should be able to defeat it.

  • @alphacenturion2 I play with my family and we are fairly coordinated. The only reason we lost our first go around was we weren't well stocked. I have no doubt that we could defeat it if only we could summon it. I get that they want players to work together but if there is no one around what do you do?

  • Been trying to get a crew of 5 plus to help me and a friend fight the boss anyway we got help from two great Canadians (pc players) (we are Xbox).

So we had a crew of 4 but still needs more and found a lone sailor at the island waiting for help too.

Anyway went out and got beaten by the boss and respawned at the very top go the map, after sailing all the way back to the start point the young lone sailor had got impatient with having to wait and decided to blow us up.

Was so frustrating and time consuming there must be an easier way to get more than 4 friend on to the server to help. Looks like I'll not get this live event finshed now :(

  • @pumpkinkangaroo Get your family together on a galleon, gather all the supplies you need, I like to have 100 planks, 100 nanas and over 100 cannonballs to be safe. Have one person play the song (with the charger plugged into their controller) and just sail around looking for a sloop.

Explain that you just need a 5th to spawn the megalodon and they can leave after if they like. A well organised crew of 4 should easily be able to kill it.

  • @ca11and I feel for you :( I've never played a game where the reason we can't finish an event is because of something out of our control or not influencing us as people - it's not because we have to work, or we don't have game time, or we have PC problems, it is literally because we can't find more people to do it with and I am so frustrated that such a silly and simple reason is the cause of me missing out on SoT's first update, especially when I have been defending Rare for ages from people saying the game lacks content, and now many of those same people are loving this boss and I can't even summon it. It's super disheartening. A basic component on any event is accessibility and they haven't considered that at all...

  • @pyranna87 We HAVE been doing that, it's very very difficult that's the issue! And not everyone wants to use dirty tactics and threaten someone on a sloop until they join...
Most people ignore me, others haven't completed the quest and dont' have the drum, others back stab you for the laughs.... it's so difficult to find like-minded people and to be quite frank I would hope that if I logged on again today I could find someone after a few hours search but why the hell should I waste that much of my time just because a game is ill-equipped to group people up for an event.... in a game whereby player interactions stake place every 15-30 minutes this event was poorly thought out...

  • I did it the first time yesterday, it took me around 10-15 mins to find someone.
I found some nice German Guys that we helped get the drum, and then we summoned the Shark together.

I think it's more about reaching out correctly.

  • @pumpkinkangaroo Like said in my topic. A 5 man required for a game that only has a 4 player lobby MAX? Who was the genius that thought that wouldn't be a problem? You can call me old school.... I don't care but YOU SHOULD ALWAYS GIVE IN GAME DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO USE NEW ITEMS! I thought the game buggout when I got the trumpet and tried to use it. Nowhere in the game itself does it tell you that it is for game chat purposes. NOWHERE!

  • @angrycoconut16 I agree with you 100000000000%

  • @wwstreams I'm sorry. It may be my frustration with this task, but your comment really irritated me. You think we need to reach out correctly? Just because you got lucky you think everyone else on the boards posting the same frustrations are all doing it wrong?

We have been in empty or near empty servers. We often only see a couple of sloops and they have no interest in doing a hunt. We have no interest in somehow forcing them to. I don't want to be forced to play the game someone else's way!!!!

As to why we wait, we wait because if someone wants to do this task they will be in one of two places!! They won't be chilling at Golden Sands or questing at Cannon Cove. They will be in the area.

We did have a little luck. Last night we had a solo join in but that made 3. It was very late last night and I couldn't stay awake any longer so we had to call it a night. Today we managed to find 2 crews but they were almost no help at all and after we got sunk and made our way back they were gone.

We continued to fight but spent most of the time repairing and bailing. In the end Meg timed out and we were unable to complete the task for a second time. This is only adding to the frustration.

We will try again tonight when our boys get off work. If we can find another to summon it, we can at least manage to keep up with repairs and still shoot with a bigger crew.

I keep trying to think of things that may help in the future. Perhaps the ability to choose a "task" server? Let all of us who are having trouble grouping up get into the same servers!

  • @pumpkinkangaroo I'm sorry if my comment bothered you.
The thing is every session I've been in (In the last 2 days), i have been able to communicate with people, making deals to take on the Shark.

I just feel like it would be strange, if i just got lucky every time.

  • @pumpkinkangaroo Are you Aussie? I have been trying with my boyfriend for the last couple of days and only found one crew. I was having issues with the game at the time so we couldn't join them, nothing but empty servers now.

  • @sugarist Not an Aussie but we often are on the same servers with them. My husband works nights so we are usually early morning eastern US or late at night. We've been messing with our sleep schedule to try and get into fuller servers.

We're going to try and head in by 6pm our time when our son's can get on and hope that there are more ships around. At least being on a galleon with 4 crew members will be a huge help and we only need a solo to join in.

I'd love to meet up with you and your boyfriend in a server! Like I've said, we all have enough people willing to do the task with us, we just can't get on the same servers! I would be willing to stay up until 2am (lol in fact we did the first night trying to get a group going) if I knew we'd have any kind of luck. Do you think my sons' bosses would take a note from Mom about why they couldn't make it to work tomorrow?

  • @pumpkinkangaroo Sounds great! And maybe bake a cake to send with the note lol

  • @wwstreams What?? And so what is the correct way, pray tell? What is this magic formula for actually coming across people on the ocean who are in the same mindset as you and want to do it with you? I'd love to know what you are doing which we aren't.

  • @sinseers Exactly! It also doesn't give any indication on the distance, I was talking to ships but I have no clue if they heard me or not!! I don't think the 5 man requirement is bad even if it requires multiple ships, to be honest I really like that, but Rare gave us NO tools to find this other crew, or multiple crews, other than a bloody megaphone. Fat lot of good that is...
