Things Rare could do to give gold value.

  • The gold in sea of theives can only be used to buy cosmetics, which is a problem. I personally do not care that much about how my pirate looks, because I can't even see him most of the time. So there is no reason for me to gather treasure, and getting treasure is almost everything you do in this game. So what reason do I have to keep playing? I know I am not the only person in this mindset, so post down below some things rare could do to give money value.

Some things I would like are:
    -The option to buy resources
-Expensive ship upgrades( such as hull -reinforcement, larger sails, cannons with longer range etc)
-Different kinds of swords and guns to purchase

If they were to give gold value, they could also create a system that can take away gold to make PvP more risky. They could do that by taking away a amount of gold every time you die/ lose a ship.

I have honestly already stopped playing sea of theives, and adding in a few new features every month will not keep everyone occupied. Giving gold value will do a large part at giving this great game a future.

  • None of these are a good idea. Sorry mate. But i wish there was more to do with gold too. All your ideas will brake the balance. Except maybe buying resources. And i already seen alot of ppl wouldnt be happy with that

  • Well the balance issue is solved by implementing levels and servers like most games. If you have lvl 1 upgrades you go in lvl 1 servers. Lvl2 upgrades go in lvl 2 serves. Everyone is still equal. I agree tho that something more than cosmetics is needed. Not sure what but I’m the same. Could care less about cosmetics. I want to change my gaming experience

  • @byf8ththrugrace this will never happen. Whether anyone of us wants it not, the game can't possibly be ground-up redesigned.

@WWmagnumWW I want my skill to matter. The last two points break from the design. The first would need some sort of timer or only be allowed for fresh server spawned ships.

  • @byf8ththrugrace and divide the community? split friends? for not having those nonsense I bought it.
Buying resources seems to me something more useful and would make more sense to the economy.

  • Rare has already recently announced that they won't be putting a price on death since so many people disliked it. Also the sea of thieves developers have already said that they want everyone to be on an equal playing feild, so ship and weapon upgrades will most likely not be a thing.

  • @wwmagnumww I don't agree with upgrades because yes, balance is important.

Buying additional fun types of swords or guns could work - it won't break the balance so long as these weapons themselves are balanced, and there is no reason that all weapons need to be available to all players at all times, again making gold redundant.. I'm sure Rare will add weapons in the future, why not make these purchaseable? We have a sword, and 3 types of guns, that is all people need to get them started, and if no weapons are OP then it won't make a difference anyway. The other weapons can be sold in a weapons shop and people have to buy them to try them out (perhaps when purchased they can also be stored in your personal inventory and accessed from the weapons area of your ship, but each pirate needs to purchase it them self)

I like the idea of buying resources but buying planks/bananas/cannonballs feels unnecessary... basically because they are easy to find...

However perhaps if they introduce new kinds of cannon balls, cannon balls which are specifically better for PvE (Such as the new AI threats), perhaps they can be bought? Not found, BOUGHT. We need more things for our gold to go towards you are 100% right! Inflation is a serious problem in the game. I would have no problem thinking 'right I want to hunt this.. therefore I'll buy some of these..' Plus that would make it more exciting, having to think about stocking your ship for your voyage...

Me and a friend also toyed with plenty of other ship cosmetic ideas (not sure if you'd be interested in this - but everyone can see what a ship looks like!) Furnishings for your captains quarters, a new type of ship wheel (not OP, just cosmetic), perhaps plants, trophies, whatever else, to shove on your ship.

As for upgrades and such, levels aren't a good idea, everyone should be on the same server and should be balanced.

Agree with the incentive though! For god sake Rare give us more to buy :P

An easy way to fix the gold redundancy is to make weapons need repairing too.. give them durability and we have to pay for them to be repaired! Or if it's an additional weapon type to the 4 we have currently, we can buy them, heck even multiple ones, and they are able to break (no longer usable). Then we have a constant cycling of our gold. It's crazy that players are accumulating hundreds of thousands with nothing to do with them... we need something continuous to spend our money on or this will be a constant problem.

  • Maybe not so much, "upgraded blunderbuss" just different guns that everyone can have? id love a bow, slingshot, harpoon etc, id love ship upgrades however, even if cosmetic or for storage, like stages in upgraded captains cabin? for looks add in beds/trophies etc so it looks cooler, make use of the barrels, add upgrade options for carry limits or something? cannons that can be changed for other type of cannons/ grape shot or harpoons? nothing game breaking, just some added customises.

  • I like the idea of having a cost of respawning your boat on the same server, giving you a thought process while engaging the same crew multiple times, not a huge amount of gold thought, just enough to notice maybe a % value of the crews overall wealth.

Was also in a game with a few like minded players recently and they had an idea where you would buy a mobile ammo box with a limited amount of ammo to help on some more unsuitable skelly spawns for souls voy's, if it was lost by the crew or stolen or consumed then it was gone, i am no longer 100% behind this idea but during the time of discussion we had a rough time with several gold skelly spawns and awkward to get more ammo i was a little salty so i agreed haha, nice little idea nonetheless but i fear it would have negative implications on the balance of some pvp encounters and maybe make the soul voy's too easy.

  • @elf-wo1f I like the idea of cosmetic ship upgrades! The trouble is if it involves changing the size or shape of the ship it could also become a balancing issue I suppose.. (just trying to think of reasons others may be against it)... you are right though, perhaps your first ship shouldn't look so great, and as you upgrade it the decor gets more and more fancy... perhaps it looks shabby at the start and with the final upgrades it can have a red carpet and gold furnishings... perhaps there are different options and that is only one of the final options, there can also be different themes depending on how people want their ship to look... that way it is still balanced as there won't be the whole issue of where items can and can't be placed on the ship.. although i still think Rare should encourage a bit more individuality when it comes to cosmetics...

I like your cannon idea too! It wouldn't be OP, but cannons must be 'upgraded' before they are able to utilise new types of ammo.

For the game to have any form of longevity and last it needs to have things players can aim for, which is lacking a bit now.. so these sorts of ideas would be great.

  • @angrycoconut16 would love the idea of the harpoon for A. whale hunting and B. sticking it through the hull of a ship, dropping your anchor and boarding it :D

  • How about paying to recolor?
Hair, weapons and clothing can all be tailored.... for a price.
    How about flags for sale?
    Can we buy tattoos?
I killed a kracken, let me get a back tattoo that unlocks once I do.
Face/war paint would be nice as well.
    Thanks

  • @theshaman73 I've also thought of the kraken.. the kraken should drop 'krakens ink' or 'krakens blood' or something.. which is black. This can be used to craft/purchase unique sails coloured by krakens blood, or unique paint for your hull... something very krakeny :)

  • @wwmagnumww hold on hold on. I got the solution. Make a third person view. Boooooom! Mind I'd blown right? Right!?

  • Gold value would increase if there were more things to spend it on, but it doesn't have to be power upgrades. I think a big problem is that there isn't enough ways for us to show our progression. Since progression in this game takes a lot of time, there should be more unlockable cosmetics for every reputation level, cosmetics for different achievements, or maybe unlocking new stuff from finding hidden chests in secret locations, or doing different things around the world.

They could add a ton of stuff to the ship that's not just different colors.. The ship crest is one thing that they have designs for already but for some reason is not in the game yet. They could also add skins for the helm, various decorations around the ship like customization in the captains cabin, different styles of lanterns on the ship (lighting and design), or just random goofy stuff to have fun with xD There's an infinite amount of cosmetic things they could add that isn't just for the characters.

Since gold is really hard earned, anything we spend it on will feel rewarding, especially if other players can see it and get a sense of how far you've progressed.

  • I agree that there should be ship upgrades available but to level the playing field just make sure that they are expirable/expendable that way it helps to level the playing field making sure the noobs aren't at a complete permanent disadvantage. Eg. Double cannon / explodes after 10 shots / 10,000 gold , or things along that line that have a limited lifespan and must be repurchased at outposts

  • I like the idea of using gold to have my ship stocked by the shipwright or the ability to buy barrels from the merchant, etc.

  • @skullmanbeard said in Things Rare could do to give gold value.:

Should of made grog cost a few gold. Add a element of buying grog for the occasion. Lol. Pointless I know

And an option for buying a round for anyone currently in the tavern

I disagree that it's pointless. It's fun, that's the point.

  • I wouldn't care about cosmetics even if I could see them, the main point is that we need things to spend our gold that are not cosmetics. Even if they upset the balance.

A big challenge for game producers is to keep the game fair for everyone. What Rare did to keep the game fair is give everyone everything as soon as they p the game. There is no progression, no reward for doing quests, and no reason to repeat what you've already done. leveling up to buy cosmetics is not progression, it is an excuse to make sure the sheep keep playing a shallow game.

  • @wwmagnumww

I don't disagree with you. Cosmetics are only one piece of the greater whole that would give us all a sense of actual progression. That piece by itself is lack luster. Amen, preach brotha preach!

I have dabbled in some thread on here that touched this before.

Adding it's that allow an increase of abilities or statistics would ruin what they are trying to do.

Now I, you, and the rest of this forum have ideas on what should be in the game, but my little education in how games are made make me think that most of these won't fly, especially if it involves the word 'add'.

Sooo...looking at only what IS currently in the game-
To make gold really worth something they should alter how voyages are acquired and they should tier the voyages.

A reg voyage should cost nothing. It should be an assignment the guild pays you for upon turning it in.

Messages in bottles, just the message, should be an item we can sell to the skull or hoarder for decent money as we are recovering the intel that is the bread and butter of their enterprise. If we choose to do the message then we should get a bonus for completing a 'lost' assignment.

Death should cost money if your ship is sunk, at least PvP death. And you should respawn way, way, way far away. And you should always respawn at an outpost. The problem with the death toll is griefers, easy solution, make it impossible to grief kill.

Now, last I promise, there should tiered, premium quests that give us some view as to what we are recovering. A bronze always give x minimum value and has so many locations on it. Silver has more, gold has hours of play.

The problem as I see it, is without clear avenues of how long something will take me to complete and thus progress everyone is going to end up dissatisfied.
If I have a hour to play, I want to go buy a quest that I'm reasonably sure I could get done in an hour. Right now its a total roll of the dice. Worse is often when you do complete a voyage it's worth barely covers expenses.

I dig what you are saying- but implementing it in a game like this is tricky.

  • Odd thought-

What if they had cosmetics that showed a form of progression. I know right now you can only buy certain things after a certain rep level. But what if by doing certain things a decal was added to your boat, even if just for that crew session, or a medal added to your uniform, a feather I'm your cap.

It doesn't totally do what you are saying, but right now a pirate legend could run around in stock sailor gear and you'd never know.

I feel like actual pirates would recognize other boats and pirates by tales they hear in port.

So like...idk if your crew killed a skull fort during your game session, there should be a skull painted on the bow letting go others know that they are (possibly) a decent crew.

    Am I making sense?

  • @wwmagnumww
I don't agree with linear progression for your ship, and Rare has stated they don't either.

One thing though I would love to see is if you could kill a skull fort, and then pay to have the fortress skull turned into a lantern on your ship.

I agree this game needs more cosmetic options, and things that will add more uniqueness to each ship, and player, but we don't need anything that gives a crew an advantage over other players!

  • @fancypantzmcgee

You do make sense and it reminded me of something I read in an article a long, long while ago - now whether all of this or part or more is still being considered, we don't know, but it shows the general idea that Rare have (had) for customisation.

    Is there customisation?
Oh, yes. In the course of the presentation, Chapman mentions (ahem):

    Different classes of ship
Character clothing made out of vanquished enemies (for instance, a Kraken tooth hat)
Character augmentations (e.g. hooks for hands, a peg leg made of an old blunderbuss)
Ship upgrades (cannon types, reinforced hulls or upgraded paddles)
    Figureheads
    Sail designs
    Captain’s cabin designs
    Ship colour (Black Pearl ahooooy)

The idea is that progression is as much (or perhaps more) represented visually than in terms of improved stats - something that sounds closer to games like Monster Hunter (where armour and weapons are made specifically out of the very things you’re fighting or farming) than a more familiar loot-focused game.

    2016 IGN interview

  • @katttruewalker wayyy better than how I was saying it lol.

    Thank you!!!

  • @holezinya Though I cannot prove it, I have killed multiple skull forts, and even they got Boring to me after the fifth or sixth one. The main point I am trying to bring up is that we need things to spend money on that are not cosmetics, because cosmetics are just for show, they hardly change the overall gaming experience.

  • On one island, there's the giant monster (kraken maybe?) skeletons littering the beach, with the bow of a shipwreck piercing the skull of one coming through the eye socket. I would pay a lot of (in game) money to be able to take one of those skull and mount them like that on the front of my ship.

  • @fancypantzmcgee I have killed the skull forts multiple times, and it really is not that difficult. Since everyone has unlimited ammo and lives. The only thing that can make them difficult is other players, but there is also many variables in that situation as well.

  • @wwmagnumww I think your missing what I'm trying to meet you in the middle on.

If I'm on a server on a galleon, and we crush the fort, it would show us as fort killers the rest of the time we are logged in or until a new fort spawns or whatever.

By killing the fort you now have a visible status, which lets others know. They then can choose to avoid you or go after you.

You are saying cosmetics aren't progression, I'm saying if cosmetics clearly identified accomplishments that would defacto show progression.

As far as the OP of spending gold, I've given them two bits I shan't do it again my good fellow.

Won't happen. They will never do vertical progression for a very good reason. They want an even playing field and you don't need a special sword to be better, your experience and time in are that advantage.
