Volcano Islands! Would you like to see them?

  • @drakebg757 i can not stop thinking of he lava flow idea it would defintly spice things up!

  • @crackerjackx13

If you look at the dev. SoT videos you'll see concept art of volcano islands with the raid-skull above them. They stated they will expand the world map overtime so I bet we'll see this soon(tm).

  • @capt-nailed-it do you happen to have a link to theses videos? would love to see them! please and thank you!

  • @crackerjackx13
I would love a puzzle based raid event
Instead of waves of skelly and cannon fire to worry about, you have to keep your ship safe from fire and explosions while you solve a series of b***y traps and puzzles to get the key/artifact

  • @rattlyfob i am very much in the same camp! it would be nice to have puzzles not just riddles or x based quests!

  • @cloudedmonkey the south park video, lol i cant stop laughing!

  • Yes to all of the above.

  • @cmm-solo Would you like to add any ideas? something that would peak your interest?

  • @crackerjackx13

    In relation to this?

All of the above is fantastic and I am shocked there is no volcanic islands in this game.

I would like to see something more mysterious in this game, like something fun.

For example, I would like a Bermuda triangle type area where if you sail through it under the right conditions, for arguments sake lets say you had to sail through this area at night, when the moon is full while playing a particular shanty your ship is dragged beneath the waves with you on board and transports you to an underworld, like an entire map with a different set of Islands where everything is spooky and murky and dark like a Davey Jone's Locker type idea. Within this realm there could be a secret volcanic island that you could go to where you have to try to survive unique enemies and conditions to get into some kind of inner sanctum where some cursed treasure lies BUT you can only take one piece from this realm and return back to the normal world but when you do it reduces your attack power by half (or something significant) and changes your ship and your crew's skins into something like a ghost ship and a ghost crew as long as you have the....'coin' or piece of eight or whatever in your possession.
You could cash it in for huge amounts of gold but Because your attack power is reduced and perhaps you are unable to eat banana's while 'cursed' the risk is very high for carrying it.

  • I love the idea of a volcano island, the unpredictability of it potentially erupting if you're on it, collecting treasure. Not fussed about the idea of traps, I think keep it simple. Volcano islands should be risky, beautiful and bountiful.

  • @cmm-solo

Obviously this would be difficult to do but perhaps not as difficult as some would choose to believe.

This game has lots of potential to be more than what it is right now-although I have had a lot of fun playing it so far.

  • Consider this my vote - I'd love to see volcanoes, and some kind of fire mechanics in general. And ice too, but that's a different topic I guess...

  • Sounds cool I think this would be perfect to add when they do the map expansion

  • @program-024 Do you have anymore IDeas Sir?

  • @crackerjackx13 Oh there's lots you can do with volcanoes. And I mean lots

For example, you could have them simply being an environmental threat. Some volcanoes, like Stromboli for example, erupts regularly enough that tourists go and watch it. Not unlike Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park. So you could have a volcanic island that instead of lava flows, it intermittently spews out molten rock and also projectiles. The projectiles could be similar to cannonballs in mechanics so you don't have to worry about building up the slopes with debris.

Another environmental threat would be the lava flows as mentioned earlier like the Hawaiian Islands. You have lava flowing down from fissures towards the sea. These eruptions typically don't have projectiles like Stromboli does, but the lava flows could be dangerous since they are the quickest amongst lava flows. They typically go down previously made channels and tubes. Do you risk exploring a cave only to see a seething mass of molten rock come flowing down the pipe? Are you oblivious to the lack of vegetation and blackened rock indicating where flows regularly come down? Of course that kind of lava flows more like molasses than anything so you couldn't be chased down unless you happen to drop on it or something. But it can restrict paths you can take.

Another hazard that could be done similar to the lava flows, but much much faster moving, would be what are called pyroclastic flows. The best descriptor for pyroclastic flows would be hot clouds of death. This is what happens when an eruption plume collapses and you have these clouds of hot volcanic ash and gases rushing down the slopes at very high speeds. You can't outrun them and they are quite lethal in real life. So in game you have the queue of the eruption going off. You hear it, see it, or whatever (taste it?). You have a time limit to get to a safe spot, a place not covered in grey ash for instance, before the cloud comes through. The father you are away from the cone, the more time you have. And I should note that these death clouds are perfectly capable of crossing water. They have been known to incinerate wooden vessels.

Then you have ash clouds. We'll ignore the health effects of inhaling microscopic pieces of rock. But they are excellent light blockers. As in, if you are in an ash cloud, visibility gets reduced to a few feet (that's being generous. There are reports of having absolutely no visibility whatsoever. As in, you put your hand in front of your face and you cannot see it no visibility). And it is dark. Like middle of the night with cloud cover out in the middle of the woods dark. Almost like being in a cave with no light sources. Though you wouldn't know about the ash cloud from a distance since it would be indistinguishable from normal fog. Perhaps a bit more grey and slightly darker.

Of course you can't neglect earthquakes! Typically eruptions are precluded by rumbling of the ground. You could have your players stumble about like they are slightly tipsy after a grog or two. Tsunami risk on adjacent islands anyone?

And then there is lightning risk. Eruption plumes generate lightning a bit more readily than your typical storm cloud. I don't know if they typically reach the ground though. But it would certainly make things look much more ominous and spectacular.

Now with all of that being said, do I expect all of this in the game? Probably not. Fluid simulations are among the most computationally intense things you can do. And then there is the whole hazard balancing. How lethal do you want your world?

  • @alphacenturion2 at the end of the day i do to. it would be great!

  • Love it... some good original thinking there matety!

  • @piratecraggy Thanks dude! DO you have any input?

  • @program-024 great input!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @program-024 having it incerate the vessel would be a great mechanic i keep thinking about other hazard that could be added like flames.

  • Volcano islands would be really cool, but they shouldn't erupt every day, it should be a rare event. Realistically volcanoes almost never erupt, and it would make it more exciting to see it if it's rare, like the kraken. When it's erupting there could be some smoke formation in the sky similar to the skull fort cloud, letting people know it's erupting.

  • @crackerjackx13 Strictly speaking it won't reduce the vessel to ashes so perhaps incineration was a poor choice of words. That's due to thermodynamics and all that good stuff involving heat flow. But pyroclastic flows will definitely char whatever wood it comes in contact with. I can imagine arriving at a volcanic island and seeing charred boats with not a soul in sight. Blackened hulls with no sails and rigging. Definitely would add to atmosphere.

And @Rildan not all volcanoes have such long waiting times. The cataclysmic ones certainly do have waiting times on orders of hundreds, thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of years (see Yellowstone). Such an eruption event would be best for a temporary event for a week or something and then have the post-eruption layout be permanent.

However, not all volcanoes are catastrophes waiting to happen. Stromboli near Italy erupts quite regularly ranging between minutes and hours. So regularly that it has become a tourist attraction despite the occasional long distance projectile. You can treat some of the projectiles like cannonballs which can damage ships and players. That would make it like your run of the mill hazard like storms and such.

  • I posted this 2 months ago...and now with the E3 reveal i wonder if they took any of our feedback? What do you guys think.

  • @program-024 did not know that about italy, though the gas made from magma hitting water would be interesting on players as it is acid....

  • @crackerjackx13 I noticed that they at least put in volcanic bombs. I also know that this thread isn't the only one that was requesting volcanic islands.

And yes the clouds of water vapor when magma hits water does have some acid content in it if there is any gas left in the magma by the time it reaches the ocean. The in game effect would be a gradual decrease in health while in proximity of the steam I presume. But the acids are strong acids that readily dissolve in water. Inhaling the stuff in real life would do a number on your lungs if you are exposed to it long enough.

  • @program-024 I like this input thanks alot, volcano bombs would be nice. thank you all for your input so far, what else would you want to see?

  • Are you asking for Forsaken Shores? O.o

  • @crackerjackx13 sagte in Volcano Islands! Would you like to see them?:

    .
This looks DOPE. A.F. !!!!! I understand why this got so many Likes. ;-)

Aside that it seems like we will get a new Worldmap with lots of burning Islands in " Forsaken Shores ",
this is a swell Idea. And even better ... ...

    .
What if such a Volcano Eruption could "also" be a Danger for the own Ships staying nearby the Island? ;-) You know,
flying, molten Rocks into many Directions, like huge Cannonballs from above,

dealing serious Damage to the Ship if hitting it - and setting it on Fire because of immense Temperatures,
"KILLING instantly" every poor Fool who is on the Ships Deck where the molten Rock hits ... ... x)
