Is this a PvP only game?

  • Based on what I read it looked like some PvE play was possible. But all I can find is PvE with PvP. It looks like a fun game for groups but that wasn't what I was looking for.

  • Basically everyone except the loud few who defend the game feel the same as you.

I keep coming back to the forums to see if there's any changes coming, but all I have found is more horizontal progression, micro-transactions, and more skeletons.

  • Yes, this game has only one game mode. It is PvEvP. The gameplay loop focuses on PvE adventure style gameplay, with PvP a possibility at any time. Rare tuned the game to have an encounter rate of 1 ship every 15 min or so. If you where looking for a pure PvE experience or a PvP focused experience this is not that game.

  • @foldupprawn7403 There is no pure PvE in sight for now, PvP is always active and there are no safe zones.
If you want to play PvE, you have to get a bit paranoid and avoid contact to other crews, as the risk for a battle is quite high at every encounter.

@Lord-Sphinktus Is it PvEvP or PvPvE?

  • @sirliborius Maybe it's EvPvP!

  • I mean, to be honest the 'E' at the moment is pretty much skeletons and some tentacles.

  • @super-poopsy Snakes! Don't forget the snakes!

  • @Crimsonraziel next content patch they'll give snakes aimbotting guns. (new AI threat!)

  • @foldupprawn7403 You bought a PvP based game so deal with it, its not Sea of Carebears so you will have to deal with getting attacked by other ships and losing all your loot

  • Not a game for the faint hearted in terms of PvP. It really is a case of get good or go home I'm afraid.

  • In this game, you just have to endure from all idiots drowning your empty ship and spoiling your quest! I went yesterday to dig in the quest chest, the ship was drowned by some moron, who was just bored, he is so entertained. It's time to throw this debility game where even on outposts can not make green spaces!

  • Thanks for the replies. This is an awesome looking game and as an old (65) sailor this is appealing. But in 6 hrs of play the only way I sold two chests was to sail into an outpost as fast as possible, jump ship before ramming and swim to shore before being jumped and then go to a mermaid for a new ship. As an old FPS player from the days of Delta Force the combat here is lacking. The enemy runs through me and I can't track them. My deck encounters have gone like this. A guy pops into view on deck and shoots me. Then I aim and he darts into me, I miss and he kills me. How did a guy swim to my ship under full sail and board it? Why didn't I see at least a mast coming? Are guys just swimming around looking for a ship to pass?

  • @foldupprawn7403 The combat mechanics are terrible and the sword is full of glitches. The sword allows you to lunge forward after a short charge period. If you do this into the water, you retain (maybe even gain some) momentum, and go scooting across the waves.

To make this worse, you can exploit the sword charge before you exploit the lack of water physics. Charging the sword normally makes you move slowly and lose the ability to jump or turn sharply. If you hold block and then initiate the charge, you can move normally, jump, and turn more freely. So what you do is block/charge, and when your pirate lunges, you jump toward the water. You'll land in the water and go even faster than the first lack of physics exploit that I explained.

To add to this, you stay in the inertial frame of whatever vessel you're on.. meaning that if your ship is travelling north, and you face north and do the block/charge/jump exploit, you hit the water with the charge momentum and the momentum of the ship that you used to be on but are now 200m ahead of, and gaining ground.

  • Actually this game is: login looking for fort raid, no raid? Log off and relog untill you find one, then you go raid and take stuff, maybe pvping against other at raid.... end of the game...

For some reason I find that way more fun than you clearly intended it to. You ever seen that movie Rango? I want Rattle Snake Jake to be the new boss now...

  • @ttargetpractice Ooh, I never knew about these advanced sword charge moves. Thanks for the tips!!! I'll have to practice them.

  • Basically it's a PvP game. You can try to play it PvE but most ships that see you will try to sink you.

I play mostly solo. You can enjoy the game if you keep an eye out and run from any sail you see, don't carry too much loot (I limit myself to 2 or 3 items at a time) and be willing to be sunk a lot whether you have loot on your or not.

Yes, it is Sea of Murdering Morons.

It's a PvPvE game, but it's a game about being a pirate, and, pirates are defined by the fact that they attack and robs ships... So the main focus and premise is definitely PvP.

  • I play mainly solo and as far as my sessions go I have noticed the pvp has died down lately. Most ships I come across are fine leaving me alone. Even some galleons just want to grind out whatever they are doing and as long as I stay out of their way they leave me be. The few instances I've had pvp situations have been enjoyable and I'm not really a big pvper in general.

I dunno maybe all my luck in life was saving itself for this one game but I have had a generally chill and balanced time and that's solo. To be fair I have heard enough horror stories around here to hesitate to recommend the game based solely off my experiences.

  • @greaseman85 > Yes, it is Sea of Murdering Morons.
You have that right. And before someone throws out the "it's a pirate game" excuse, grab a history book and read it. Actual Caribbean pirates of the 17th and 18th centuries would rarely kill all aboard. That type of reputation would quickly spread. A targeted crew that knew they would all be murdered if they surrendered to pirates, would fight even harder. Pirates were/are criminals and creatures of opportunity. They wanted the largest payout, as easily as possible, with the fewest losses. A single shot across the bow followed by surrender was what they sought. Sorry, but sinking a person's ship while empty and docked at an island or outpost is not being a pirate. It's being a moron with a great future as a bully.
