I posted this on reddit, but I thought I'd copy and paste here to spark more discussion.
This might be an outlandish suggestion, and given the general detest surrounding in-game player hubs (Destiny and COD: WWII as key examples) this may not be received with a positive reaction.
Anyway, an island that serves as a dwelling for players, much like Tortuga in the Pirates of The Caribbean movies. We currently have outposts, yes. But aside from reloading voyages and selling our plunder, they serve no purpose (until stat based upgrades are a thing, I will stand by this statement).
Tortuga could be:
- A safe zone (i.e. no combat)
- A place to idle if you need to go AFK
- A place to socialize
- Somewhere to recruit new shipmates for crews and pirate factions/clans independent of per-session crews which would add hierarchy and renown to the game through leaderboard rankings (similar to Clash of Clans)
- Compete in mini games (firing crew members from cannons to see who can achieve the furthest distance?)
- Interactive NPC's
