White Flag/Pirate Flag

  • How about a feature on ships to raise a friendly "White Flag", or a hostile black skull and xbones "Pirate Flag". Like they did in olden pirate days. :)

So you fly the white flag, that lets other white flags know you are friendly, and want to work together. The catch, White flags can't hurt other white flags. A Black Flag comes in with his pirate flag waving high above the crows nest, you know they have hostile intentions. Man the canons! Avast ye land lubbers!

Say you joined forces with another white flag; and you believe the time has come to betray them and steal their booty. You must lower your white flag, and raise the black! While you are raising/lowering flags, A warning is sounded and your ship is somehow identified visually. Sort of like how a skullfort is identified. Say flag raising/lowering takes 30 seconds. Your "allies" have time to react and aren't screwed.

I think this might be a way for pirates to work together. As an added bonus, this is somewhat historically accurate. Thoughts?

  • I agree.
Either give us a white (friendly/surrender), black (neutral) and red (no mercy) flags to swap between to convey intent.

Or auto alter the flags based on our PvP activity within our current session: White=non-combative, Black= has attacked/killed or sunk a ship, and Red= frequent fighter/killer.

  • Ive seen this idea posted a couple of times, and I like it. Pirates did "hoist" the colors, usually as a sneak attack, though! The mechanics of it would be awesome, having to physically raise the flag on the mast, but I fear it would be used to draw unsuspecting victims in, thus loosing its in game usability after a few weeks.
Still would be neat to see implemented for those that would use it accordingly.

  • I agree - pirates would sail around looking neutral until they decided on a victim, then they'd hoist the jolly roger.

It's a great idea and I hope it gets further consideration.

  • @oneeeyedwilly raising a flag for 30 seconds sounds like so much fun

  • And once it became just a cosmetic there would players SCREAMING to make it impossible to attack while you "white flag" was up. We would be right back to not having everyone pleased. Personally, i wouldnt care if it were just a cosmetic, there are still players that would use it accordingly. Bottom line is, in game, were all pirates and you cant fully trust anybody. Sure, have your white flag up and let another white flagged ship get close, but dont be a dummy and unload your cannons.

  • I mean... It doesn't have to be 30 seconds. Just some amount of time of warning "sight and sound" to those around you that your intent is changing. As soon as you "raise the black" you can attack white flags at will. Anything goes.

It gives people that really want to give someone else a chance at friendship to take that chance on them. Nothing is permanent...you can go back to violence anytime you want. They just get a few seconds (30 in my example) of warning. I see it as a possible toxic community treatment.

  • I just want a pirate flag, how can it be we have a pirate game without a pirate flag
