Battle Royal?

  • Let’s be honest, servers are SUPER empty at times, and when you do find another crew, they almost either run away, or combat is left dull and unsatsifying.

A battle royal would add more competitive gameplay as players are forced to fight as the storm closes in at a confined island. When there are only two ships left, both ships are given the option to battle it out in a giant maelstrom (whirlpool) or simply fight as they please. A battle royal would also introduce alliances as there would be an option for solo mode (one sloop) duo mode (two pirates, one sloop) or squad mode (four pirates, one galleon).

*If this does ever come across Rare, and their incredible team, a battle royal would have to introduce a whole new set of weaponry such as melee and/or ship upgrades in order to progress toward end-game. Side-note; as much as I love the sniper, I would love to see harpoons (whether in-hand or giant ones for your ship) or a type of crossbow or bow and arrow, and perhaps more consubmable items; fish, chicken wing, potions, etc.

    Thank you for your consideration!

  • @babyfacebeard battle royal? no. EOT

  • @avecrux care to explain why?

  • This is already battle royal

  • @babyfacebeard sure

    1. This isn't this type of game
    2. P2P servers won't handle 100 players
    3. We don't want another battleroyale
    4. Community want more updates, not more gamemodes
  • @avecrux you’re totally right, but I’m thinking long-term. It’s not easy to develop a BR-mode, but if you’re going to want to keep players for years to come, you gotta implement new game modes.

Say it to counter-strike, league of legends and come back with your conclusion.

  • I don't like this idea being implemented at all. As posted previously, it's already a PvP game, and I don't believe we need another battle-royale game as the industry is already flooded with that genre.

  • Not for me thanks - and I say that as a huge PUBG fan.

  • @avecrux CS & League of Legends weren’t released as a foundational platform. Sea of Thieves is an incredibly fun game, but unfortunately is still in Alpha as I would call it. There is a SOLID foundation, but we need more. I agree to disagree.

  • Only if they call it "The royal battle" and have a fat king who runs the games

League of Legends has added plenty of new temporary game modes over the years, Star Guardian Invasion as a PvE only mode completely turned the game on its head and was tremendous fun to play.

I think eventually once the base mode has been fleshed out more and all the major issues ironed our then a BR mode could be a great addition to SoT, and contrary to the argument that "their are plenty of other BR games already", I think SoT could also be a great addition to the BR genre because of the new twist on the genre it would bring, just like how many Fortnite players enjoy it more than PUBG because of the novel aspect that the building mechanics add to it, I'm sure there would be a lot of people interested in a BR mode with epic ship battles between say 25 ships at once (25 galleons x4 crew each = 100 players total)!

The main thing is that there is absolutely no point trying to discuss this NOW, because even if it could one day become a thing it definitely isn't gonna happen any time soon, and now is definitely NOT a good time to be distracting the devs with even considering the idea.

  • No, go play Fortnight you child.

  • I enjoy Battle Royale games, but I wouldn't want it here. Purely because it would detract from what is awesome and unique about this game.

The best thing about gaming today is the sheer choice of different games, I have a lot to choose from and I can play different games when my mood suits.

I think converting this game to a Battle Royale mode is a detriment not only to Sea of Thieves, but to Battle Royale as a whole. It will not only divert attention away from making the core game great it will also further help dilute the pool of good Battle Royale games.

The BR genre is at a real danger point, where the question is "How can we add a Battle Royale mode to our game to make it sell better?" rather than "How do we design and build a great and unique Battle Royale game?".

Check out Maelstrom, I believe that is a BR game with ships that's currently under development.

  • I would like more players in the server mind.

  • @ch4o5bl4d3 temporary game mods in LoL. How many % of players played it? i am sure there is over 80% of players who are playing only 5v5 summoner rift.

  • @babyfacebeard

    As I say to all of the Battle Royale suggestion threads;

Do you not understand Market Saturation?

Remember when Left4Dead was first released? It was pretty well done right? A lot of game developers thought so too. So everyone started making zombie games. Everyone. A lot of which were not very good. Then we had zombie game after zombie game being released FOR YEARS until devs finally got the picture to create original titles again.

The same thing is happening with Battle Royale games. H1Z1 did it, then the Culling came out. Then we got PubG which set a standard for the genre. Fortnite's BR mode followed. Blizzard hinted that they're making a Battle Royale game and even Hi-Res just released Paladins: Battlegrounds.

There are plenty of battle royale games out there if that's what you want to play.

What Sea of Thieves needs is more content, which thankfully Rare has shown us they're working on. It does not need a secondary game mode that will just distract from the main title.

Actually no, the whole reason that the featured game modes in League of Legends are always only temporary is because Riot anticipated that whenever one goes active such a large chunk of players would switch to it that the queue times for normal/ranked modes would shoot up significantly, yet it all works out perfectly because most people want to play the featured modes while they can, but then all go back to the regular modes when it's gone.

SoT could do the same with BR if they wanted to be smart about it, have BR only available for a few weeks at a time, soak up the extra attention when it goes live, then take it away again and immediately follow up with a content update to the base game to tempt all the new/returning people who came to try the BR mode into hopping over to check out the current base mode too.

  • Battle Royal ? Hell no. Gaming world has enough Battle Royale c**p kids. Go play them.

  • @babyfacebeard I personally don't care much for competitive PVP-modes, but if it makes enough players happy it could be an addition.
But it would be weird to have other weapon sets in this game mode than in the "normal" mode - if weapons are added, they should be added everywhere.

Also: if you think the combats are dull, more combats will (most likely) not make them more entertaining. It's just more of the same stuff you considered as dull and unsatisfying.

Yes. Sea of Thieves - a game that doesn't need a Battle Royale mode? Do YOU know what games forums you're on?

@peteloaf777 one where we don't call people children for their gaming preference. Sea of thieves is arguably just as 'childish', if not more.
