So far thankfully hackers aren't super common but it's ridiculous and frustrating when you run into them. Share your tales of annoyance and let us share good strategies to deal with hackers to avoid having to switch servers except as a last resort.
SoT Needs Some Sort of Anti Cheat!
So far I have run into a fellow who took about 4 blasts from a blunderbuss and managed to survive without eating any nanners.
The other one I ran into just now was a team on a sloop that were doing something with latency. At least that is what it looked like any time I got near the guy on my boat my game would slow and it would be like moving in molasses and there was a massive delay on my actions. I actually saw my cannon balls curving to miss his boat at maybe 10 feet away when they came to ram directly at my cannon.
Sadly the action was to rough to manage a screen shot so I can't report them but hey we'll all fell better sharing the tales and having a grog!

"To capture what just happened:
1. Start your game and play as usual.
2. When something cool happens and you want to record it, press to open the guide, then press to grab the last 30 seconds."@itstartsatdusk I am on PC not Xbox and I didn't have my Ge Force experience or OBS running to record. I was just knocking out one or two merchant quests before fixing dinner. But thanks for the advice, hope it can help someone else.
Yesterday we run into sloop and they had anti-sink cheat and it was nearly impossible to kill them. It took 4 of us blasting one guy with two shots each to kill them. But it was impossible to sink them. After we have send them a message saying they are being reported, one of them just answered 'Just get cheats yourself'.
So it's definitely an issue and it ruins the game. My suggestion is to create a server where you lock all the cheaters (based on their IP not GT). If it's 'such' a fun for them to play with cheats make them battle between themselves.
Also I would suggest an option where players can choose that they want to be on a server without PVP. Such server should have no skull forts but just voyages. Sometimes I just want a relax gameplay just for fun, without need to deal with trolls. Same if I would like to play with my nieces, who are young, I wouldn't like to put them through PVP with some die hards.

Not saying they werent cheating but unless you really get to point blank range with the blunderbus it is entirely possible to take 4 hits. With the cannonfire it isnt entirely out of the realm of possibility for your ships speed and the waves to make you miss.
Considering it would be clientside disruption forcing latency is not an easy task...That aside, it is possible they cheated and it is also possible you and most people felt cheated because you lost, which is common... I have been called a cheater before and a pc player and I had to laugh a little as an xbox player.
My point being... there are cheaters but not everyone who wins is a cheater...
Also, side note, with two people bailing you can save a sloop with any number of holes in it. As long as you dont die and bail you can save the ship.
Best one I've seen is people who can shoot out of cannons and land on your ship from just inside the rendering distance. Of course you can beat on them nonstop with swords and shoot them with out them dying. They can also instant reload, ignore respawn timers, or spawn directly to their ship from death. We can still take down most of these guys.
@mcstabbypants That happened to me quite a few times, more times than not it's the server lagging, not registering the hits.
Had to hit this 1 guy with 4 sniper shots within 5 seconds by 3 people before the guy died, he was in my face swinging his sword that didn't hurt me any.
I must be one of the lucky ones, haven't met a single cheater in over 150 hours of gameplay.
I know they are out there (as in every other game like this) but don't feel that common to me.Been called a hacker and cheater a few times though by people that "shot me 20 times without dying" .
What i would suggest is just use the report feature and maybe making a clip, other then that just quit game and find a new session, its not worth your nerves to stay there and get mad about some kid using aimbot or so on .
But im sure that some of the REAl cheaters are getting occasionly banned, however they will never dissapear. People will always cheat, they can't ban everyone, and even if they could, new cheaters would come. Same with the cheating software.@imperial-kaz said in SoT Needs Some Sort of Anti Cheat!:

That's funny... I was on that sloop you are talking about. And you messaged me that you reported me. I did NOT reply with "Just get cheats yourself", is said this:
Yes, you shot some holes in our sloop, but when 2 people are running up and down with buckets a sloop can last a long while.
You are part of the problem. Because people like you keep spreading things like this and creating the idea that this game is infested by cheaters. While in fact you just lost a fair fight.
I was able to board your 4 man galleon and kill all 4 of you because you had a lot of banana's onboard and I just kept running to your banana barrel to get more. Not because of cheats of whatever you are accusing me of.
You reported me because your mind and ego couldn't handle the fact that a sloop just sank your galleon and so to preserve your ego you convinced yourself that we HAD to be cheaters.
I am not saying that there are no cheaters in this game, though I have never encoutered any (that I know of), i believe they are out there. But by posting on forums that you encoutered them you give others the idea that there are a lot. And when they encouter people that are really good they automatically assume that they where cheaters because 'there are a lot'.
Please don't do that. Don't make the problem bigger than it is, and don't accuse people of cheating without being 100% sure. It sucks being falsely accused.
@rattlyfob
THANK YOU!
I'm getting a little tired of being called a cheater just because I use the game-mechanics to their utmost potential. I mean sure, it is a little weird when a galleon is using 4 cannons to blow your sloop to bits and you can save it by having 2 people running up and down with buckets. But that is how the game works, it's not a hack.
People keep posting in the forums that they have encountered cheaters, but I have had several messages form players saying they reported me. And that makes me wonder if the problem really is as big as the community makes it out to be, or if the people complaining just THINK they encountered cheaters because they don't understand how they do certain things.
For example I have been called a cheater for "Teleporting to the deck". While I was just using the sloop's ladder from inside the ship, where the map is. But because people don't know that that's a thing they automatically assume it's a cheat.
When people keep posting their encouters with 'cheaters', based on assumptions, on these forums it only adds fuel to the fire and will ultimately only lead to more false assumptions and accusations because these posts confirm the idea (while it might not even be true) that there are a lot of cheaters out there.

I was on there aswell, you lost fairly. Dont complain if other people kill you and dont spread misinformation. Rare needs to investigate what happend, and they will waste their time doing it because you are making false reports.
@rattlyfob Dude the guy with the blunderbuss was a total noob he didn't even try to dodge, use cover or even jump to avoid the damage. I have been beaten by really good players before this was most certainly not that. lol
Both people on the sloop were above deck one steering and one jumping on my sloop. The cannonballs literally did extra curves when they got close to the ship as it rammed directly at the cannon. It was absurd and bizarre to watch.
I've been beaten by plenty of people who just outplayed me these two situations weren't it.
@mcstabbypants yesterday a discord user told me he cheats using three cheat mods. One for seeing all players on the map, one for knowing where all the chests are on the map and one for auto-aim.
My friend called him out on it and the whole discord group turned on my friend and said they all use those mods too, kicking me and my friend out of the group.
So yeah, cheaters do exist.
@roth-dog Oh yeah I knew the git gud brus would converge at least a little to claim I was just complaining about getting beat. I've been killed and sunk plenty, sometimes it's bad luck and sometimes it just a much better player. No one likes losing of course but I know when there are hacks afoot, it's pretty easy to tell the difference.
@creative-zombie Yeah I had forgotten the reload speed with the guy who was immune to damage. The rest of the crew pointed it out too. Such frustration.
@hod-make-u-rage In the first situation there was no lag. Everything ran perfectly fine the guy just didn't seem to take damage.
In the second there was no lag except any time I got close to the guys it was like within a certain proximity of them everything was moving slow mo except them and suddenly there was a second of delay between hitting a key and taking an action.
@bloodsplosion93 Dude two times in as much as I've played isn't common at all. Did you miss that part of my original post?
I didn't have any of my recording software running at either time because I don't usually record game play. But if I think something is fishy next time I will take a few moments to set it up.
I'm not mad just thought it would be nice for people to have a chance to share the moments they dealt with hackers and maybe someone might have a good strat for dealing without leaving servers. If anything I feel sorry for the hackers, they won't ever get the satisfaction of improving their gameplay and succeeding through practice and hard work.
@realstyli my two PCs are having zero problems with the Xbox app. I wish I could help better(try contacting Microsoft support). In the past, Xbox live problems where 99% Network config related, I figured(wrongly) that that was the case with this issue.

Yeah, I've done tests in Windows and also in the Xbox App and not showing any network problems.
I've asked other people about it and none of my friends, on PC or Xbox One, can see recent players for this game. So that's why I think it's the game, not Xbox Live.
Ahoy mates, just posting this here as a reminder that Rare are actively investigating all reports of hacking, cheating and the like which reach them via Support.
Cheating
We have seen a few reported instances of cheating, where players are compromising the game client or using programs to gain an advantage over other players. Everyone should understand the seriousness with which we treat this, and anyone identified as taking part will have action taken against them, up to and including permanent Xbox Live account bans. We have a zero tolerance approach to this.
Investigating: We are investigating and have detected some instances of suspicious behaviour, and will be taking direct action against anyone abusing the game in this way. The number of people we are currently investigating who show suspicious behaviour make up an extremely small portion of our player base. Work is ongoing against this as a high priority, once we are certain we have identified people cheating we will swiftly ban them.

@rattlyfob so the guy i saw survive an explosion of a gunpowder barrel he was holding....... tell me what legit game mechanic allows that?
Again not saying he wasnt cheating but if it was underwater he would be fine.
If it was out of water he is a cheater.

well there ya go mate, definately cheaters.
My point wasnt to invalidate anything it was just that not everyone that seems to be cheating is cheatimg. Sometimes there are blatant cheaters though.@zarioca said in SoT Needs Some Sort of Anti Cheat!:

This is what I am talking about and why you need to be careful about who you call a cheater. There are several game mechanivs that when used properly give you a significant edge over other players.
-Sword straffing when someone doesnt kbow about it
-map room ladder
-Underwater powder kegs, if you fill the lower deck with water you can survive a powder keg blast.
-2 man sloop bailing, you can survive the red sea and bait galleons into it. Galleons cannot bail fast enough to survive.
-blunderbus damage fall off and aiming, if you dont aim with the blunderbus the damage falloff range is twice as bad.
@rattlyfob I didn't think it was that was why I clarified more. lol We all know at least one gamer who calls anyone better than them a cheater. It's just as bad to report people who aren't cheating as it is for people to cheat in my opinion at least. It wastes time. It's a fair point to be suspicious of someone calling out hackers they saw.
@katttruewalker Of course and that is awesome but this was more an attempt at a letting people vent kind of share the frustration deal. I know unless I have solid evidence I would rather not report someone, since it could waste time and resources.
@xi-am-vengencex Yeah if the player isn't holding the barrel underwater it won't kill, though I don't know what the circumstances you saw were, so I couldn't say.

@rattlyfob out of water inside the fence of a skull fort. i was in the crows nest and got a semi lucky shot while he was mid run. boom . and he is standing there unharmed
Damn thats some mad cheating
