Does anyone know any details about the keys? Can they be taken off island? Is there a time limit on how long I can keep the key before opening the vault?
Would like to be able to kill the captain and take the key, then return to the fort like 30 mins later after everyone is gone and then claim the vault.

lol, yeah, getting off and away from the island with the key would be a feat in and of it's self. Dealing with all the other crews ON the island and then all the people on ships around the island. THEN, all the sharks because of people being sunk around the island.... I think, if you manage it, you deserve all that loot lol

Yes, they 100% can be taken off the island and then you can come back.
Our crew took out the same galleon and sloop (literally) 4-5 times each and they kept coming back - we managed to finish it and grab the key, but not before they all came back for the fifth/sixth time. We grabbed the key, and got onto our galleon to flee.
The galleon and sloop then partnered up, and camped the island - knowing that we would have to come back.
Soo - we went to the nearest Outpost, changed all of our sails, skin of or ship back to base (to look like noobs / make our ship not recognizable) and we had to go in a huge loop all around the island. Finally, after more than a half hour they gave up and left.
We went and opened the vault and loaded up without conflict.
We considered going to take them out again, but decided that the risk was high when patience would win the 'battle' for us
So yes, I can confirm that you can take it off the island, and come back more than 30 mins later.
While the key was on our ship, we picked it up and put it back down every few minutes (as a just in case sort of thing)
It is very important that you know what island the skull fort is, as after you clear it the skull disappears - one of my crewmates told me that on another ship they had to do the same thing, and decided trying going to another fort and using the key on their vault, and that vault was empty (which makes sense, only the one that goes up generates loot in its hold)
I would imagine that at a certain point the key cannot be used, like if the skull goes up again on the same island - but I have no idea.the only question i'd like to know is if the key acts like a chest in that if it stays in the water too long it will sink and disappear? my buddies and i fought 2 galleons over and over while slowly killing the fort, and then when we got the key we were swimming back to the ship and died but never saw the key again where it dropped in the water and the vault was never opened.

Once upon a time there was an old look like lady, lets call her Fat Petti. Yeah she was old but she was furious like 10 man ! And thursty for blood like 5 sharks ! And whats MORE important - she loves Gold.
One day she sails Three Seas and saw SKULL in the sky .... She new its a SIGN - Sign to get rich !
Under cloud of night she was approaching this skeleton building and TAKE it with force ! She killed every skeleton in the Fort, Captain skeleton reveal himself and died from mighty hands of Fat Petti ...
But, my friend, she didn't kill those skeletons on cannon towers, and now you wan't ask yourself:
"- Why Petti !? Why you didn't kill those bastars ?"
Before dead Captain bones droped on the floor and key to All Treasures in the seas appeared.... she was listening ... and hear canon shots. :O shock
Fat Petti didn't hesitate - she knew - enemy ship approaching and there is no chance to stand alone versus two or more enemys.
She grabed a Gem key and rushed toward her sloop "The Fattys".
Her intuition did not fail her, enemys Galleon was approaching Fort on the other side. She hide Key and set sails away from the fort without any other loot, but galleon was vigilant (but no so vigilant :3 in few seconds you know why).
Sun was high in sky when gallen sit on Pettis sloop 6 o'clock, he was faster and Galleon crew (if they not so dumb) knew it.
Petti said to herself:
"- Only one thing i can do to save my booooty!"
She grab red barrel, that carefully was kept on a sloop, and jump into to sea.
!!KABOOM!!
In FEW SECOND enemys Galleon blow up from the bottom!
Our mighty pirate Petty talk to her friend mermaid and ask him to teleport her on a sloop again !
She quickly turned the steering wheel to Galleon and prepaired canon balls to fight it. Galleon crew was ready for the canon fight, but they didn't notice that barrel made parmesan cheeZzze of their ship.
So in 1 minute Petti was victorious and Galleon sunk.
YEAH BOOOOYYYYY!But as we all know in this world pirates respawning at the same
"F-word" biom, so our hero can't go to Fort and grab her treasure. First of all she need to shake galleon from her tail.
With precious Key on her boat Petti manage to hide at the end of the map behind mighty rock, that cover her small sloop in his shadow.
And shoot herself on top of this rock.
From this rock there was a nice view to Skeleton Fort and no one can't see Petti (because she was not starring on the horizon with spyglass!Rly your shining like a star whyle using it! :D )
"-I'm so smart!" she thought to herself.
In few minutes enemy Galleon show himself on horizon and move quickly to Fort. He made a stop in there
"- But they can't open vault without key HAHAHAH" says to herself Petti, whyli she was looking and them from above.
Galleon was confused, he lost fight to a sloop, he lost key, he lost even one chest when he sunk. So in about 20 minutes of miserable searhing and making circles on the water. He - the Galleon of 4 man crew - left empty-handed.
Fat Petti wait a few more minutes till night cower the seas and sail to fort grabbing all loot from it and sold it later ! #Woo-hooSo what's this story about ?
Yeah you can grab a key from Fort and run away, my whole fight and escape was about 40 + minutes.
I think loot didn't despawning till next Fort is is available which is few hours.Sorry for bad English :D im from Ukraine.
@dustofthedeath that's what we were thinking too... we waited and looked for a couple hours but no key and you could still see the loot through the floorboards of the tower
So buddy and I slipped in while 2 galleons fought and finished the fort killed the captain and figured while they were a little ways away fighting we grab the loot instead of running away and hiding the key. Some how the door was somehow opened and loot gone, is this some glitch or hack, because we were left standing there clueless because I got the completion for the skull fort as well.
I try this Yesterday.
I was going to a skull island to fight, almost there the cloud disappeared. (Boss was kill) the sloop saw me coming. And they try to fight me and fail. Value was close. So I know the key was hidden somewhere? I found it in a busk. Took it, and run with it. (They were coming back) after 1 hour I returned to same island, look under the floors. And no loot.We took the key and ran last night trying to shake another crew. Not only does the key not despawn but when we got transferred to another server the key came with us. We found an active fort, used the key to enter the loot room, and took all the loot. The fort stayed active, the skeletons were still there and the skull cloud was still in the sky. We hauled tail to the nearest outpost and cashed in while 2 sloops fought over an empty fort.
My buddy and I fought off three galleons at a skull fort "thank goodness for gunpowder barrels" and ended up getting the key and as soon we get it our bout starts getting shot at and sunk. So I hide the key on the island in a bush and try going after the enemy and die .😖 Spawn up on our new bout "don't know how I remembered what fort it was" some how found the fort and the galleon leaving it going to an Outpost. We are think they found the key and looted it. Well we go and check it out and boom there is the key still in the bush got our loot and left
u can do that ;)
you can even, do a fort, keep the key, an if you are lucky enough for the same fort to be active, just go in an open the door an get double the loot.Only tested it with a Castaway chest.
But we did a fort. empty it all, but a Castaway chest we left on the stronghold chest places, 2 hr later the same fort was active, an the Castaway chest was still there.
Think things/chest/key etc. disappears only in the water. so you can always hide the key or chest as long as you want, a least 2 hr ;)@dustofthedeath waht do you mean any other item .. merchant items stay for ages .. throw a whole fort worth of loot in the water and watch everything but the merchant stuff sink ... ask me how i know l**o
The key CAN glitch out if you put it down somewhere.
I recommend having one person hold the key the entire time youre out and about.
We sailed around while being chased and some of my crew would dip off to this island or that island to trick the persuers. It worked.
A crewmate dropped the key by the anchor(to help us raise it) and the key disappeared. Everyone freaked out and started searching. Out of pure luck somone climbed the crows nest and saw the key sitting atop the horizontal beam of the middle sail.
If it can glitch like that it can probably glitch anywhere...

The loot spawns when the Raid spawns.
You can literally see all the loot through the cracks of the Mainfloor.
A non-active Skull fort will not have any loot, unless the last time there was a Raid there, no one opened door. In which case the fort will have double loot should a raid spawn there.
