No Anchor or Anchor Chain!!

  • It upsets me everytime I anchor my boat to explore a sunken ship and theres no acnhor hanging from the boat. The Anchor is one of the MOST IMPORTANT and beautiful parts of a ship. I was a deck seaman in the US Navy. I drove a Billion dollar ship and tended to docking procedures and the Maintaining/Lowering & raising of the anchor. I just think omitting an actual anchor from the game for whatever reason is wrong. you guys have very talented artists and I believe that If you truly care about this and what the Anchor represents you will give all ships what they've been missing, an Anchor and an Anchor Chain. I'd love to peek thru my spyglass at the enemy and be able to say "Captain they Are Anchored", because I can see an actual anchor hanging from the front of the boat and when they raise it you can see it leave the water. It could even be a Third way to board or sneak onto a ship. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it right.

Also : I don't care about the anchor having physics The only things in this game with true physics is the whole boat, fired cannon balls and players. It could just be an animation. All it needs to do is point straight down and maybe sway and jiggle a little. I don't care if it clips thru the ground in shallow water. In real life the anchor doesn't need to touch the sea bed to keep the boat stationary, it is the sheer weight that does it. So saying it isn't worth the cost sounds like a cop out. Just design it animate it and implement it and give us more customization along with it.

  • @r3lapz I support this 100%

  • I support this too!

  • It's not there most likely to the fact the ocean goes down forever in this game and it would be silly to spend way too much time on something that is only visible underwater and would be difficult to implement correctly.

  • @dread1217 Because immersion in a game is silly?

  • @blackbeard-lufy Something that would be hard to do correctly and work when the ocean goes on forever is silly, the devs probably thought about it but I can't imagine the time it'd take to implement it to have functioning physics and what not. Besides this isn't a realistic sailing game by any means, there's a couple of those but this isn't one of em.

  • Captian "Drop the anchor!"
Deckhand "OMG the lag, I can't move"

I can see this happening if they were to add an anchor mechanic, with the rendering of the anchor and chain going to the bottom of the ocean floor from the bow of the ship.

  • @dread1217 Well if we have no faith in Rare's ability to implement something like this, why should we expect any additional content be added to the game in the future at all?

  • I'll try and find a source but I remember an interview pre-release where they discussed anchors and potential row-boats. The anchor was originally meant for the game but was scrapped due to the dev's belief that the cost was not worth the inclusion, but row-boats are still being considered. If we had anchors that would give us a 4th component we can upgrade on our ships though :D

  • This was actually addressed in one of their "AMA" sessions. They said they looked at the idea of adding physical anchors, but ended up scrapping the idea. I wouldn't hold my breath for seeing it in the future. Would be cool though.

  • @blackbeard-lufy I don't have faith I just think it's a waste of time when other things that could easily be implemented can be done, the anchor is such a hard thing to get right and it's best that Rare leaves it out instead of having it in but broken as can be. Believe me if it was in but glitched out the ship you and everyone else would be throwing a bigger fit on here, if the absence of an anchor is such a big deal then don't play the game.

  • 100% Agree !!! i'll make a post on that and you did it ... nice ... we need to see anchor and chain, the ship stay in levitation l**o ...

  • @R3LapZ Yes, please! An anchor would be awesome. While I think it could be difficult to match the chain animation / pulling up task with the actual balanced time it takes to raise the anchor, it would look really cool if your boat had an anchor.

@dread1217 well then just make the "lower anchor" function unavailable on the open sea or change its function to slow the boat not halt, only in conjunction with lowered sails.

  • It's not that there are no anchors it's just that all anchors in Sea of Thieves have been cursed my a mighty skeleton king to be forever invisible to the human eye.

Now please don't ask me how this skeleton king came up with that b*****s idea of a curse.

  • @r3lapz One of the ex Rare developers came out after release and said this

"All through production there was no physical anchor in the game (they were planning on anchors being an upgrade you could buy through microtransactions, alongside sniper scopes…),” he wrote. “The problem being, that the way the ship was designed, there was nowhere for the anchor to go. But from the layout of the ship you could see that the chain from the capstan went through a wooden box on the lower deck meaning that the anchor was clearly just being ‘pooped’ out the back of the ship. “I know coz I was one of the artists who built the ship and questioned this design decision many times but just got shut down. It always seemed really odd to me that no-one had even looked at how an anchor works on a ship, in a game about pirate ships.”

  • Well, if we had an anchor, we wouldn't probably be able to drop it at the same speed depending on the sea floor depth. Near island it would be fast, while in deep seas it would be longer, if not impossible at all. A real anchor falling down implies realistic physics too. So when it falls, it's always at the same speed, but it needs more or less time depending on the distance between the ship and the sea floor.

The absence of anchor is regrettable, but in fact it has a greater player experience value. You probably don't see it now but you would really hate to not be able to know how long your anchor needs to drop, depending on the sea floor's depth. While actually, with a little practice you unconsciously learn and know how it works, because it's always the same time anywhere, and you are able to drop it to stop the ship where you want with a quite good precision.

  • To see an anchor would not be bad in itself, but it would also be cool if the fall time on the open sea would be longer than in the shallow water. I also find the game mechanics very questionable at the moment. One can only continue driving when the anchor is completely thinned out, but as soon as it leaves the ground it should not offer any more resistance, one could consider this...

  • @r3lapz >In real life the anchor doesn't need to touch the sea bed to keep the boat stationary, it is the sheer weight that does it

If that was the case, why even drop the anchor? The weight is already on the ship and influencing it.

  • I would love at least a visible chain when deployed. It should be possible to cut this chain if some silly crew has left their ship with sails down but you won't be able to raise their anchor because they have one or two crew on board. They would then have to raise and redeploy to "fix" it.

  • @thejolirouge You should utilise sail length for stopping and then anchor for maintaining position. The anchor isn't designed to stop a ship.

  • Noooo...

The cosmetic anchor is probably not there for a good reason.

Have you ever heard how the Ark Royal struck its own anchor in shallow waters and sunk to her doom?

The cost to raise her far exceeded the original build cost, and then it was just broken up for timber after seemed to costly to repair.

You won’t want the same happening in this game now would you.

  • I too would like this and I would also like the ability to climb one to get onto a ship.

  • I am more disturbed about ships having no wake behind them.

  • @lucky-monkee And bouncing around in the distance with no waves under them.
