About attacking parked ships

  • I have been in some situations where i had nearly nothing to lose and got my sloop anchored at an outpost.
In both situations another ship came close and attacked me or my ship.

The first time a galleon came close while i just spawned in and roamed the npc shops.
They parked a bit away and used the cannons of my sloop to shoot themselves back on their ship, a clever use of other ships i have to say.
But when they finished selling everything they started to search the outpost for me and started to shoot at me obviously - at least one of them did. When he was unable to kill me (i didn't even care to shoot back) he took his tankard, send me a cheers through the chat menu and went to the tavern. To see what kind of a player he is i followed him and we drank a few tankards only for him to literally stab me in the back for no reason. At least i got an achievement to drink with someone from another crew for that.

The second time i parked my sloop at the pier just to sell everything i had on board.
Everything was sold besides a crate of bananas which wasn't filled completely, a bunch of bananas were still missing when a sloop attacked me, started shooting at me and sank my unmanned ship.
I did already "hide" the banana crate at this point, but it would have been very easy to find.
They seem to look around the island for a short while before they took of again without realizing i was watching the from a very short range.
When they took of i just grabbed my banana crate - which they didn't find for reasons unknown - and searched for the last bananas across the outpost so i could sell it.
Actually i saw them heading towards an active fort, so they in fact wasted their supplies on an unmanned ship before heading into battle.

So i was wondering: What do people think when they sink unmanned ships or trying to kill a peaceful player? Do you guys think just for a second about your reputation before doing this? And pleace spare us with the "it's a pirate game" comment, i am talking about the real player who act like this and not about a npc which is scripted to be an awful person. Are any moral decisions thrown overboard when people jump into this game? Let's just answer this right here: no! This decision is made by every player for himselve with his level of common sense, the game does not make the decision for you.
Just think about the fact that your reputation is the thing that helps you over a long term, backstabbing and cowardly acts don't, even in games. If you meet someone again who was friendly, chances are you will help him out in a fight or with some supplies, but anyone else didn't earn this.

  • it only makes sense to do this if you KNOW that they have valuables on their ship. (for example if you just saw them leave an island, and then dock at another one) Otherwise, i see it as a waste of time.

  • It's the fact that there is no counter that keeps track of your cowardly acts and stuff as you described that probably makes people feel they can do whatever.

  • Unfortunaltely I can confirm this behavior from own experiences, and it happens way too often.

  • I just figure it as bad players thinking you have something to turn in after you've turned in. I've had this happen to me a couple times only for me to kill the people attacking me, sink their ship, and turn in what they came back with. It'll take time for people to realize ships leaving outposts or docked at outposts more than likely have nothing. I've already seen a drop in galleons attacking me out of nowhere, since smarter crews go after other galleons because they're more likely to have loot.

  • It's tricky I figure with this game, but I must say it can be very bitter if you're just in a port with an empty ship and you get attacked and/or killed without it being of any value to the attacker.

I had it happen last and only just started with the game, I really want to give this game a chance as it has a lot of potential, but stuff like this... Well, let's just say as it stands now I don't feel like renewing my Game Pass. :/

  • Hide your ship better and look around the horizon before stopping. I always anchor on the side away from the nearest outpost and towards the outside of the map if possible.

  • @sirliborius Only defense I have is I always sink ships at Outposts if that's the one I gotta get to [ I know your scenarios are different, but this is merely my experiences and reasons ]. I've been doing it a lot since I've been grinding Merchants, but I've been attempted to get betrayed too many times to trust other players, aside from my own Crew.

Unless we don't have treasure, we leave them be, but every time we do sink their ship, there's always a few chests left to salvage, so I think our behavior has been well acceptable.

  • While I agree that this kind of attacking is pointless and I generally avoid doing so for no reason at all, there are players who seem to get a kick out of doing so.

At the same time I do not understand why people find it so bitter or take it so close to heart. You literally do not lose much.

  • People are stupid.
    Yes, I am too.

  • @kawaii-dumpling Merchant voyages are a special point, in this case you don't have much time and can't just head to another outpost. But sinking a ship always comes with the risk that a defending crew can still be there. Also in the worst case the defeated crew can hunt you for revenge afterwards - always keep this risk in mind.

You are talking of your crew, so i expect you are using a galleon? In this case you should be able to talk to the other ship, a Galleon circling an outpost should be threatening enough to clarify this without a fight.
On the other hand you can think about the classic strategy of a crew member jumping of off your moving ship to sell a chest and use the mermaid to spawn back or you circle the outpost and pick him up again.
You get betrayed a lot in this game, but i can only appeal to everyone to give other players a chance, but still be aware and well prepared.

  • I just swim everywhere. Can't attack my ship if it doesn't exist. Swimming is way OP and needs to be nerfed, but in the meantime i'll be taking advantage of this game breaking exploit.

  • @sirliborius It is rather odd behavior. My buddy and I always make a point of leaving ships at outposts alone as they've probably cashed in most if not all their loot anyway.

I guess they just get a kick out of a easy target.

  • @sirliborius I do run a Galleon, and it's true, I can go there myself and see what's going on, but it's a choice of

"Do I be friendly and possibly risk dying to this possibly good sloop of players, OR do I kill and sink them, get extra loot, possibly, and call it a day?" Cause gosh damn, I've seen some scary sloops wipe out a decently good Galleon before, so I know how it can be, but I also know majority of sloops tend to be a parent and kid, a couple, or two buddies just trying to enjoy

I usually give warning shots, but it depends really. If I'm running Gold or Souls voyages, I usually just leave the ship alone, and choose a different outpost for obvious reasons.

  • I will sink parked ships if they are at an outpost or an island I need to get to (if I am in a galleon). I am basically trying to run them off so I can take care of my business. I don't trust anyone in this game so better to be the initiator than get ganked when you think everyone is going to be nice. I don't like it but that is the way the seas have become.

  • It happens its rubbish but it happens. I personally don't fire first, if they attack I respond. When in a sloop on your own it pays to be really careful as you noted in your post. I tend to get rid of treasure quickly and scope out the outposts for boats and mermaids before pulling up. If I see anybody I will go on to another outpost as its less hassle.

Taht's exactly the thing i am trying to point out: the players are like this, not the seas. With this behaviour you are only risking more players becoming this way. Just think of an alternative then wasting your ammo. I don't say you should run around gifting flowers to everyone, but try to communicate in any way first, of course still stay aware.

Odd way to travel for a pirate who can't swim

  • @kawaii-dumpling If you can kill and sink them anyway, why should you be afraid of coming closer? And instead of being friendly you can just jump on the pier right at the merchant, cash in and jump off again.

  • @sirliborius Few cases have been where the sloop is sitting there with one man on the attack, the other lurking around with a barrel. It rarely happens, but even if my crew is a well oiled machine, I don't like to take chances.

It's probably wrong to do so, but like I said earlier, I've been getting 'lucky' that these ships I've been sinking have been holding a few extra chests and skulls for us so I continue to do so for that extra loot factor as well.

  • The seas will make you this way. When I play with a crew, we do this. We fight dirty too. We didn't always fight like this or have this mind set, but the seas they either change you or you break.

When I'm alone I do merchant quests. I don't explore the island and I know where the animals well enough now that I have predetermined routes set up. So it's quick and if I get robbed then they get practically nothing compared to what I would make. So jokes on them. Lol I don't even hide my wares. Those chickens and pigs are on the top deck.

  • Happens way to often. But it all comes down to the game doenst tell you anything. You never know if the ship is friendly or not and when you close its to late. I have said it often this game needs sone kind of flag or reputation system for pvp. When get trough to an outpost i should be save. Let npc ships guard them or something. Get me at sea or an island thats ok. But when i manage to get back to an outpost i should be safe. Real pirates didnt attack themselves in tortuga ether because their whole community wouldnt worked then. They werent mindless killers!!!

  • The only reason I have to sink parked ships is if they are parked at the island I have to be at for my voyage. Just for me to make sure that person won't try and take my loot once I collect it ( or sell it at outposts ). To many times have I been stabbed in the back also by being friendly and that person stealing my loot.
