The Rules of Engagement for the Open Seas

  • 1: If the cannons be raised high, no cannonball shall fly.

-Players with their cannons raised have no desire to fight, but if you choose to engage unprovoked, you may be signing yourself up for a hempen jig.

2: Lantern light flashing bright across the sea, requesting a parley they be.

-Players may want to request a parley in return for assistance with certain tasks, especially Skull Forts. Parleys are words of trust exchanged between crews, but don't trust anyone to hold up their end all the way through, until well after the assistance has been received.

3: If at an Outpost they be docked, attack them you shall not.

-This should be an obvious courtesy. Players are too exposed at Outposts and the fight will be extremely unfair and one-sided from the get-go.

4: If another ship you see in unfair exchange, assist them with your own from appropriate range.

-There will be many times when ships will be attacked unfairly. Assist them to gain a positive reputation in the Pirate community.

5: If a treasure ye see on the open seas, first come first serve is the way it be.

-There are many sunken ships and treasures to be found in them, as well as on islands and beaches. If you spot a vessel collecting the treasures, stow the cannons and turn the wheel. They were there first.

6: Lanterns on both day and night, those ships aren't meant to engage in fight.

-Not everyone is enjoying the PvP aspect of SoT!
    Leave this crew alone...

(These rules are just for courtesy, don't expect everyone to know about them, or even follow them)

  • Perfectly said, I follow these rules. I do have one person in my crew that teeters and is a loss cannon. So always beware, ha haaaa

  • @lordloharrtalem take everything , give nothing back! You missed that. too many rules .... this game doesnt need rules , just an in depth tutorial for newbies ,and some common sense. if rare wanted rules like these they would have coded them in.

  • @cpt-danksilver It's not like the pirate code exists or anything.

  • @lordloharrtalem If the servers were larger this type of player policing would be my preferred method for players to make peace. As the servers are so small you can do some of these things, but it doesn't quite work fully.

Not that I agree to any of these terms formally. Aim your cannons high, it will take longer for you to return fire.... Have fun on the seas.

  • @unknownscientis exactly , there are no rules in the game aside from usual XBL ToS ect, but people want 'hold hands' rules.... nah

  • Hello all

i wil give my report 2 this rule :

3: If at an Outpost they be docked, attack them you shall not.

-This should be an obvious courtesy. Players are too exposed at Outposts and the fight will be extremely unfair and one-sided from the get-go.

Sorry but no player do this... 99% Attacks you.. its a shame ...
i am fine with this rules but i think many players give a [mod edited] about it !

[mod edited for language and offensive tone]

  • These would be nice to see added into daily lives of this game, but most of the time when I sail up to talk they shoot first or kill me without listening. I'll try to do this stuff occasionally still to see if anybody might follow these rules but I feel those who do would be exploited.

you so true thats what i said .. they dont listen pvp kids all the time kill kill its all what they want 2 do !

  • @lordloharrtalem I love it!

  • I have developed a pretty effective strategy. It requires me to be on constant surveillance however. It's the type of strategy where every second counts.

I tried some of what you suggest a few times. Each resulted in giving my opponent the time edge they needed and resulted in my demise with only one exception.

I love the game. I think it plays well. So far, the 'extending my hand' type of strategy is a dangerous option that offers little advantage.

I appreciate what your suggesting, but I'll stick to my approach.

  • @nattens-barn I'll go ahead and add this to the rules. I knew I was missing something.

  • There is only one rule of Piracy.

  • @unknownscientis Ot does but they’re more what you would call...guidelines😈

  • Firstly, There are already a set of rules for the Pirates Code and a renegotiation of those was never part of the agreement. So I must do nothing.

Secondly, You must be a Pirate for the Pirate's Code to Apply and you are not. Unless you loot, steal, and plunder other ships you are only a Merchant in my Eyes.

And Thirdly, the code is more what you would call guidelines than actual rules!

WELCOME ABOARD THE SEA OF THIEVES @LordLoharrTalem

  • @elite-assasin87 I'm sorry but I must, this is a quote taken directly from any mega thread,
"Keep to the Code - The Pirate Code
As a reminder, the Pirate Code is more than just guidelines (though the reference really never gets old), but the rules of the community and game that we expect all members to abide by when participating on the forums. Any member who fails to abide by the code may find themselves put in the brig, or removed from the community."

So in a sense these are rules.

  • @unknownscientis Ah I see your point except this is not the pirate code so they are more like guidelines than rules ;)

  • Love the enthusiasm to try and push a community RoE, but trying to push a Roe on a heavily split community, sadly, won't hinder results.

  • I like them all, but 6 should be leave us alone if lanterns are off (all the time)

  • @elite-assasin87 Obviously. The thing is we can enact our own rules as being a pirate there are only two rules I myself instate and those are, "Do not fire unless fired upon." and my personal favorite, "Owe no one nothing."

I seem to notice a lot of people agreeing with the cannons upwards is a peace symbol.

I also personally don't agree with the never kill someone at outposts.

  • @lordloharrtalem we are pirates not sailors

  • @lordloharrtalem I really wish the world was full of decent people that did these rules.

  • ye have my word as a pirate that i shall abide by this here contract of official sounding and binding capacity.

  • There are no rules on the sea, the wolves eat the sheep.

"From the very beginning, we've been determined to make Sea of Thieves a truly welcoming world in which players of any creed, culture, age, skill level and circumstance can voyage without fear of friction or frustration. With that in mind, we've laid out a set of guidelines that we hope will help to keep the seas free of strife and grievance (beyond that stirred up in the course of a pirate's everyday activities)."
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/pirate-code

"guidelines" drawn up by well meaning but inexperienced devs that are impossible to police outside of the forums, and are continually open to interpretation from all sides.

The code has really only achieved in creating more angst and division then anything else. Game mechanics fixes behavior not aspirational statements.

  • @ogs-stoker said in The Rules of Engagement for the Open Seas:

The obvious fix to this is spawn-protection: make newly spawned players invulnerable until they move away from that position. Place the spawn points somewhere where they don't have a tactical advantage from being invulnerable but immobile --- Perfect solution.

  • @lordloharrtalem The only problem with rules like these are...you are always at a disadvantage to people who follow no rules.

Cutthroat, pirate, scoundrel, anarchist, __________ (insert whatever word you want here).

  • Rule number three is my main issue... If someone takes my skulls and I chase them all the way to the Outpost I give no quarter

  • @lordloharrtalem I have unknowingly been following all these except for the ship lanterns one. I always have them turned off so I can't be spotted so easily while I'm just questing. You should definitely post these in the General Discussion forum since it probably gets more traffic, also this should totally be a pinned topic.

I know only about 5% of people will follow them, but it would be nice to have a set of rules agreed upon by the community to show that I'm just here to sail and have fun, not murder and pillage you into oblivion.

I have one of those - he's usually the first to die in the PVP...

  • Obviously few would follow these in this game. But I do like the idea of some of these signals being understood. It would be nice to have a bit more unpredictability with players, verses what seems to generally be "sails! Cannon fire inbound!"

I mean, we docked our Galleon next to a sloop that was unloading last night. Went about packing our plunder in, and he started firing on us.
.... So we sunk him and turned in his chests too.

I feel like we could have somehow communicated from a distance that we had no intention of interfering with his time at dock.

  • Barbossa Guidelines Meme

  • @lordloharrtalem Yeah...if only.

    One can dream though

  • @lordloharrtalem Interesting. Did you ever check the pirate rules paper by the door before leaving the tavern? ;)

  • I see the stresses that other pirates can bring, I’ve experienced them myself, but this is all part of the game! I would love for some of these Codes to be respected by other pirates but I just don’t think it will happen.

One extreme way around all of this would be for Rare to introduce a server where you can just go in and do your quests without having to worry about being fired upon by other pirates. Like a Peace On the Seas server or something? The rewards for doing your quests could be lesser than those given on an ordinary server but at least you’re avoiding any unwanted attention.

I doubt the above would happen but hey, you never know!

  • So people can go on with their business and ship their booty unhindered through the seas just because they got their cannons up and all the lights on? I am a pirate, I would totally abuse that and I will.
I also will sink ships at outposts, on any other encounter and whenever I want. You may follow these rules but I wont. Just a fair warning, I might even signal parley to come in cannonrange. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Better be careful out there, its a treacherous Sea of Thieves.
