This guy was a legit developer working on the game for years...thoughts?
Confirmed former Sea of Thieves developer says the game is repetitive and shallow

Two options.
A: He has a point.
B: He's saltier than the seven seas.
Point b is true, and with that i feel like it makes their argument less valid.
Well duh? Most people agree with him. The reviews also agree with him. The only one defending this game is people who have buyers remorse and have to keep up a lie, about what this game is.
"Its a PVP game!"
It is both a pvp and pve. Both got sold to players. So telling half truths is cute.
"The content is what you make of it!"
Again, the game gives us less tools to enjoy the content than most games. The game is slow, the treasure rewards are tedious for the amount of time you invest. And it makes the pvp a griefing fest instead of fun because of the pacing of the game.
Again this is a 20 dollar game that got charged 60 dollars for. If we don't get content updates in the next month. This could very well be Rare last game.
All I see is complaint threads and the more I read, the more I laugh. Its great how many people are butthurt over stupid stuff that they should just shrug off its great. I just came from reading the Toxic Pirates thread and I almost died of laughter because of the amount of people crying about pvp in an open world pirate game that incentivises combat and plunder. I guarantee the politically correct "punish the toxic pirates" Im butthurt people will be the death of this game.
@ztilted Most of the time I would be laughing also, until I stop pvp and tried to do missions.
My god is it boring and tedious.
Paying 100 gold for a map, to dig up a treasure that you got for a free map. I mean the game does not feel rewarding with the grind. Time vs invested. So its hard to shrug off when you are bored out of your mind digging treasure.
If there is truth behind this, then the fact the team voiced concerns about the repetitive nature of the game for years then that’s a worrying sign. The higher ups at Rare obviously thought this little content was acceptable and wouldn’t listen otherwise. Not looking great. He does have a point though. 4 years in development and this is what we have...

"Artist"
So his work has nothing to do with the gameplay at all.
He said many of the Rare team said the same thing. It was not just him. I mean I am glad some people that work with rare have some common sense.
Sounds like he's just expressing his honest opinion on something he has much more experience in compared to us, so i'm not sure what all the negativity is for.
It's unlikely he's going to be disgruntled and throwing shade for no reason as many professionals shy away from such behavior. Also, the article doesn't come across like that anyway, just sounds like he's offering an account of his experience.
I'm enjoying the game, hell i'd go so far to say i Love the game so far. but i'm not going to start defending it / showing ignorance purely because someone said something negative about it.
They are not only entitled to their opinion, but in this case - they speak from experience.
Don't be so quick to shut people down..
The people complaining are the ones that have zero idea of ship mechanics and cant wildly swing their sword and get the results they hope for... people should turn on a good streamer/watch videos if they are struggling to get better.. My Crew in this game are an amazing bunch of killers and looters... when you are winning and making people post these threads you feel like a true villainous pirate Y'arggggg!!!
@Hudson-RL 4 year development time is not that long in terms of game design. Im a game design student and knowing this from my professors, most of the development process is done out of engine. Meaning you may have a 4 year development cycle but 1.5-2 years of that is going to be at the drawing board and creating proof of concepts to see what is viable and fun and if it has a place in the game.
@rager82 Instead of spending time explaining your buyers remorse, after about 2 months of full blown advertising in the form of streams showing you exactly what this game was...
How about use the time you troll the forums saying how everything should change, go do your research and find a new game you can play? Because you aren't getting any content for 3 months tops. Come back then and see what you can complain and stir the forums then.
@zokraitz How about you agree, and be a good consumer. Call this game what it really is. A cash grab from a studio that was on its last chance? Being honest feels good.
@rager82 It's not your thing, Meh. I've got my 60 bucks worth of entertainment. Maybe you should learn that 60 bucks for a box of 4 years of a dev teams work, that they subdivide with a publisher is nothing. Maybe you should get a better job so 60 bucks isn't such hardship on your wallet when you make poor purchases? How's that for honest?

What are you talking about? I am a heavy pvp type game. I am just more honest than you are with myself.
This game pvp is lacking.
This game pve is lacking.
This game is great looking.
Blackflag and sids pirates has more content. For a full price game, even members on the Rare team said it is a bad game. You might be happy with it, but you are just lying to yourself.
If you think that paying 100 gold for a treasure map just to do a riddle for a sea chest is fun. You have issues.

FORMER (allegedly) members
at the end of the day clearly more people are enjoying the game than not enjoying the game. So that should speak volumes.. and considering the game is very early into launch with a transparent dev team and road maps that show awesome things coming up very soon i think the games going to be just fine.
The way i see it, 2 options, play or dont.
@rager82 Yeah your last sentence says everything... You didn't do your research. That's not the game, this never was a game you should have bought.
Common misconceptions are:
A. thinking the pvp is the actual swordplay and guns.
B. pve is there to absorb yourself into only. This game is about boxes that give reason for teams to communicate and function as a whole to move like I dunno "Voltron" that is the game, that is the pvp, and that is what Rare tried to develope in the time they had. And it makes it different from anything else.
Is it the type of game that is like every other game... well no. But they succeeded and made it beautiful in what they wanted. Is it to your liking, obviously not. I am happy with this as it stands for as long as it takes for them to do what is on their design roadmap.
Still stands, you are upset it isn't the game you thought it was because you didn't spend time looking before buying. You don't like what it is, but don't you tell me to be honest or I have issues, because I know what I bought and enjoy it.
@rager82 well I say that they didn't....
I would also like to back up my statement by saying I am Bill Gates (it has been confirmed)
Seriously though, an ex-employee (allegedly) has a negative view on something...that is odd...
People believing/listening to the opinions of random people on the internet rather than their own experiences and opinions makes me weep slightly for the future of the human race.
personally, I am able to make up my own mind without input from randoms.

Do I really need to use more logic on you? Like you keep trying to turn this around as this game is not my type of game and failing pretty hard.
This game was sold as a game that had both fun and rewarding pve and pvp elements.
Have you saw any of the videos of doing a riddle just to get a cheap sea chest? No it was always a shiny captain chest they pulled out.
I am a hardcore pvper, but I also enjoy some pve elements. Most groups just reload maps now and try to take forts because that is the best way to get gold and xp.
This game should never have been released. By most reviewers coming out calling it Trash as well. So everyone is wrong huh? The massive amount of people who say this game lacks content is wrong? It is just not the type of game they want?
The pvp element is tedious. Shotgun/sword combo. Hell if you really lazy macro the two for a one shot macro.
The pve element is tedious and non rewarding for the time invested.
You have limited options on ship designs and clothing. I have seen a few ships with the same red sails and red design as my own.
This game design is the type of game I like, but the content is so badly balance, and poorly done. If you can't accept that, just don't answer me anymore.
If you want more proof of what I say is true, just look at what people are upset about. Too much pvp going around. People are not doing the pve side, but hunting and that is it.
This game needs a balance of both, if one side is more fun than the other. This happens, and when it does it drives people off.
Honestly all this „game was advertised as“ [Mod Edited] is completely insane. I wasn’t interested in SoT until late February and i only watched 1 community site which sums up everything and 2 trailers and i did know EXACTLY what this game has to offer.
I never saw a single game so crystal clear before and i am playing games for nearly 3 decades now.

Just because one can build a sword does not mean they know how to wield it.
I can finger paint does that make me Vincent Van Gogh?
@wkgnoxx Lol, you are acting like Sea of Thieves is rocket science. It is a very simple game. I am sure that he picked up enough information in 2 years to make an informed opinion.
@a-trusty-mango @rager82 Yes, yes, you want shineys, and the bell to ring so you feel like you accomplished something. Grind grind grind away, I know fun stuff like oodles of quests that you don't read, lots of purple items, once you have all the purples you will still be bored, and then what?
They will add content, you don't need to add another talk about that. That's not even the topic of this thread, there's 50+ of those. I never argued that. I argued your over generalized comment about the game and it being worth 20 bucks... it's still taken you and your agree committee @A-Trusty-Mango this long to realize this.

You lose sirs. Good day mates.
Reading the denial and deflective comments is always a good time for popcorn. History is so repetitive when it comes to this stuff.
Beddall pretty much confirmed the concerns people have been having with the game in terms of "why did it take 4 years just to get this amount of gameplay out the door?"
That doesn't bode well for the future of this game's content release schedule if the trend continues. Hopefully now that the game has launched and there has been plenty of criticism, Rare will listen to it and actually address concerns, suggestions, etc. Right before launch it seemed like a lot of suggestions etc. were all "no, we don't want to do this" with some fluffy PR reasons that sound(ed) like weak excuses.
Hopefully Rare can get this ship sailing into clearer waters and dump a ton of content over this first year to change peoples' opinions. But right now this game does not have longevity and I think folks will get tired of the game within a month (2-4 weeks imo; we'll start seeing Pirate Legend backlash sometime next week I bet) if nothing super exciting is over the horizon.
