I understand that PvP is part of the game, but after being repeatedly killed and ship sank while waving and dancing on an outpost dock and no treasure to be stolen....whats the point other than being a huge d**k. I propose a system similar to GTAV's non-hostile mode, where in you become ethereal and cannot be harmed by other players and can playout your voyages in peace.
To flavor it...you, your crew, and your ship would have a pale green and ghostly appearance to other players. Leveling up and becoming a "Pirate Legend" is just as big of a part of the game as battling other pirates, but it shouldn't be mandatory to be attacked when you don't intend to partake in that aspect of the game at that time.
Maybe to add some balance to this, all coin or experience rewards are cut by 1/3 (or any arbitrary amount) since there would be virtually no threat of losing your loot on your way to turn it in. Call it an exchange rate to turn "ghost coin" back into regular coin. This could also add aesthetic options to purchase maybe from "Davey Jones Locker" in which "Ghost coin" is exchanged for ghostly appearance items for clothing, ships, etc.
