Change name?

  • So I started on the pc this morning chose my pirate but was never given the opportunity to choose a name. I was given some random name like costabay followed by some numbers. How do I change it? I need detailed instructions. Thanks.

Pretty sure that your name in game is whatever your name is for Xbox Live. I understand that you're playing on PC, but you are still technically playing on Xbox Live. Google how to change your Xbox Live gamertag.

  • Okay, but I don't have an Xbox or a gamer tag except this thing that I had to create just to post on the forums

Change your gamertag through a web browser
    Here’s how:

Go to the Change gamertag page at account.xbox.com.
Sign in using the Microsoft account email address and password associated with your gamertag.
Enter your new gamertag, and then select Check Availability.
Once you find an available gamertag, click Claim it.
Note If your gamertag was created for you when you initially signed up for Xbox (meaning you did not choose it yourself), you can change it one time for free. Additional Xbox gamertag changes cost extra.
If you created your own gamertag at signup and want to change it, you will be charged (fee varies by region and currency).

Change your gamertag in the Xbox app on Windows 10

If you have changed your gamertag before, go to account.xbox.com to change it again. Your account will be charged. See Change your gamertag through a web browser.

If you have not changed your gamertag before, you can change it in the Xbox app on Windows 10. Here’s how:

Go to the Xbox app in Windows 10 and sign in using the Microsoft account email address and password associated with your gamertag.
In the upper-left corner of the app's home screen, select your gamerpic.
In the banner at the top of the profile screen, select Customize.
    Select Change gamertag.
Type your preferred gamertag, and then select Check availability.
Once you find an available gamertag, select Claim it.
After you confirm your new gamertag, the change is reflected across Xbox. You don't need to tell your friends that you've changed your gamertag—their Friends lists will be updated automatically.
This will change your in game name.
    Hope this helps. ;)

  • I have the same problem, the game gave me some random name as gametag. I logged into xbox live and changed my name there. My new gametag shows up on xbox live and on this forum, but not ingame. The game still shows the old random one. Have i missed something?

Try waiting 24 Hours, There may be a slight delay. It happens sometimes in games. ;)

  • I have waited almost 48 hours, still no change ingame

  • I've got the same thing right now, I changed my name but it's still showing the old one :/

  • The fact that Microsoft makes you pay to change your gamer tag is insane. You really need $9.99 to have your servers implement a database change? I have no issue with my gamer tag but it would have been nice to be able to pick a name for my pirate. Such a simple thing would make a world of difference. So many great "piratey" names will go unused.

  • Microsoft has most definitely seen a huge spike in changed gamertags since this game came out. Probably a record
