Refuse to buy a $60 game with micro transactions!

  • I keep seeing all this news about Sea of Thieves and it seems like an interesting title, but I'm just a single person giving my opinion. I am passing on Sea of Thieves for the sole reason of micro transactions. I understand a live game needing money for servers and such, but I would rather pay a 5$ subscription to play a game then be coerced into buying different game options even if they are only cosmetic. I feel micro transactions are just a pre cursor to something worse so hopefully other people feel the same and can show developers how we feel.

  • @killerdaftpunk boi bye

  • This isn't a EA shill of a lifetime

This is literally for cosmetics. I don't agree with microtransactions any more than the next guy, but its abundantly clear the game won't give anyone any leverage over one another. Im not worried one bit.

That being said, later dude. Hope you change your mind.

  • I think micro transactions are a better step for a horizontally progressing game than subscription, because you can perform equally as well in the game as anyone else, regardless of whether you pay for your vanity or not. In the case of subscription, the payment would be required AND you wouldn't be rewarded for it.

Not to mention the currency used for micro transactions will be earnable in game.

  • @killerdaftpunk

So wait you would rather pay way more in subscriptions than to have the option of buying a few extra items? Yes lets force a fee on everyone forever instead of letting people buy extras they may or may not want.

  • I thought the same, but then I looked back at games I bought and they had micro-transactions, which were:
    Horizon: Zero Dawn
    Borderlands (All of them)
    Fallout 4
    World of Warcraft
    Bioshock (All of them)
    Destiny (Both games)
Most reputable companies do this and it is under you nose, you only see it in this game because it is a $60 service instead of a game. The only reputable company that I can think of that doesn't implement micro-transactions under a $60 game is Valve, (TF2, Dota 2 doesn't count because it isn't $60).

  • Unless it is not like star wars battlefront 2 with the stupid loot boxes

  • 60 bucks is 1 hours worth of work. 1 night out cost more so this game is worth the price easily and last i check i have free will and am not forced to buy microtransactions.
Its probably best that you wont be playing.

  • @killerdaftpunk It's not how WE feel, it's how YOU feel. Most other people here are completely happy to pay in full for the game, because there's already enough content for us to be satisfied and the gameplay is awesome. RARE has put in a huge effort to make this game astounding and the microtransactions, which are mostly just cosmetics (as far as we know so far, probably ONLY cosmetics) are to allow the funding for even more awesome content.

From the sounds of it, you didn't play the Beta, nor have you seen any of the gameplay videos which are absolutely awesome, and you shouldn't be trying to force other people to not buy the game just because you can't afford to buy extra cosmetics which won't disturb your gameplay.

  • @fpsrussia70 No worries, Rare said they are never planning on adding loot boxes - nothing you buy will be random.

  • @sweetcalf942652 I think that killed star wars

I'm not disrespecting you but just a quick question what games do you play

Hello kitty suprise, smurfs and the magic mushrooms, sim handkerchief , and look at me look at me i need attention.

  • @aliendude7050 Those games do not have micro transactions they have DLC. WoW has Micro Transactions. There is a difference in the two.

  • @racmop Very true

  • I'm completely fine with micro transactions when it comes to games I really really like.

    co·erce
    verb
past tense: coerced; past participle: coerced
persuade (an unwilling person) to do something by using force or threats.

  • @killerdaftpunk bye

Yeah... but then again... the entire "progression" of this game is based on cosmetics... I wasn't aware of microtransactions in SoT, and i do feel kinda queasy about it... What's the point of farming rep to be able to buy that sweet looking sail if Joe McFullwallet can buy a better looking one? :-/

  • @killerdaftpunk Bruh it's better than games pushing it. If you refuse to play any game with microtransactions you won't be playing anything at all.

I'd say they have already figured this bit out and will have an epic outfit for those with Legendary reputations that looks superior to people who pay.

Honestly I try to understand you, guys, but hell if I can.

You rather obligatory microtransactions (real money) than OPTIONAL loot boxes, content that you can get just playing the game.

I am playing games with loot boxes for years (Mass Effect 3, Overwatch, Fortnite, etc, etc, etc) and never spent a dime. But now, if I want one of the future cosmetic addons of SoT I must add more bucks for an already expensive enough game.

    Puzzled.

I'd say no? Why would anyone buy it? Kinda defeats the purpose... Plus, usually the people in charge of the micro-transaction store are under the marketing department, not the gameplay/balance department. Its unfortunate, but likely true.

  • @sir-rhavi Here's an article on their microtransaction plans:

  • @killerdaftpunk You could pay a $10 subscription if you have an xbox and buy the gamepass. I have very few concerns about this game but I figure $20 for 2 months of testing is fine even if I buy the $60 game I don't mind also don't mind missing out on cosmetics from pre-order as I don't ever pre-order.

  • Call me crazy but I don't like buying games that have no interest in selling me more down the line. The last thing I'd want is a developer taking my money and running. Just as long as it's not a loot box.

  • Hello,

Vanilla Wow was about 50$ + a monthly fee and offered months of very diverse content. Of course, Sea of Thieves and Wow are two VERY different games, but it'll be interesting for me to see how S.O.T fares against my personal reference in terms of: hype & content at launch, and more particularly short and mid-term updates.

    Cheers,

This be some good news indeed.

  • Subscription fee would be what I advocate as well instead when it comes to this game. They are going to miss their shot.

The only good premium shop in a game is not in a game. It resides at their homepage delivering practical accessories like plushy wallets, bed sheets, dimming curtains and so on.

    Working characteristics

    • best one never misses the theme
    • best one always fits the theme
    • best one never competes with basic content
    • best one always promotes the basic content
    • best one never offers bloating items
    • best one always offers balanced items
    • best one never finds itself in the game
    • best one always resides outside the game
  • Every game that comes out now adays has a micro transaction of some scale. Destiny has silver. WoW offers various items available for real money. At the end of the day, this game isn't doing anything different than other games have done except the items you're getting don't give you any statistical advantage. From what I gather it won't be a pay to play type since everything we've seen is purely cosmetic. You're gonna get a virtual parrot/monkey/cat and wanna spend your paycheck on it? So be it! This game is so different than anything I've played in years. I can't wait for launch.

  • Wow there are so many people defending micro transactions. I hope it's just a vocal minority but the moment Rare/Microsoft wanted to charge and up front price of anything above $0 they lost the moral right to include any kind of freemium nonsense in the game. People will try and excuse them buying saying "game development has gotten expensive", or "it's just cosmetic" but its all just years of manipulation finally paying off. I for one will not spend a dime on any kind of freemium content later added in this game and will also never in any type of game pay a subscription to connect with my friends. I know there's going to be people whole heartedly against everything I just wrote but please remember its just an opinion. Here's a strongly worded but entertaining video by someone credible who agrees with me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce5CDrq4dGg

You aren't fooling anyone that you're here "just a single person giving my opinion". Your here to make a salty dog statement about microtransactions. You sound like just another Salty Dog with his britches in a bunch. You get planked by some other game that was a "buy to win"? Well the sun shines equally on every dogs a**e here. Nobody is holding that flint lock you your noggin coercing you into anything. You don't want the fancy coat or sails or adornments.. then don't buy them for krakens sake. But to condemn a game because they want offer stuff... purely aesthetic items that have absolutely no effect on game play is just plain salty for the sake of being salty.

  • @killerdaftpunk Micro transactions are a cancer on gaming. They never increase or improve gameplay, just detract from it. That said, I will still be playing this game, hoping that I can resist Rare from milking me from my hard earned money. I do appreciate that they will at least be up front about their offers. No RNG involved.

  • @shadowmerchantx Well in Sea of Thieves would be DLC but it's marketed as micro-transactions because they market their game as a service and not an actual game, within other forums I've saw debating over the two, micro-transactions are a one time use that will benefit you in gameplay (which is seen normally in games that are services such as Clash of Clans and so on). While on the other hand DLC is cosemetic stuff that adds stuff to the game but doesn't boost your stats, it's a weird line. Furthermore , the "micro-transactions" RARE has mentioned don't make you more powerful, it's just additional stuff you have.
