I want a method to close a crew off to invite-only

  • There are a few reasons for this, and a suggested way that will make it work:

    1. Sometimes my friends are having connection problems - and it's not really fair to have them replaced with a random and force us all to back out in order to get our friend back, losing any progress - or making our friend wait x amount of time to complete our voyage

    2. Sometimes we're nearing the end of our play session with our friends and we're just finishing up and don't want some randoms (and possibly trolls) interrupting our plan before we move to a smaller ship

    3. Sometimes you're on a sweet revenge trip and don't want potential trolls joining your crew and foiling your piratey plans.

My suggestion for making this work is to make it vote based - like placing a crew member in the brig or scuttling the ship - If at any point it loses a majority (from people leaving), it is opened back up. Notifying players that this has happened would also be very important - with perhaps a timeout between the last person creating the majority leaving and the disabelement - so that any other crew members can swap over if desired.

  • @pokesensei Also, if I start solo and my friend signs on 20 minutes later I'd like to be able to invite him to my sloop, not leave the game and rejoin with him.

  • Agreed. Invite Only would be great for when your crew mates disconnect!

  • YES! Its a pain when a friend loses connection and when you invite them back their invite is canceled due to a random person taking their slot. Invite only would be a lifesaver.

  • Aye!!! Having to make friends wait or try to kick a stranger is to much

  • Totally agreed, a similar situation here, one friend left and another was about to join but meanwhile randoms got in. Also being able to start as a small crew and add friends to it later without having to rejoin the game would be great.

  • This would solve a lot of problems, including the insta-brigging

  • Unfortunately, this wouldn't sit right with the server capacities. Servers want to get as full as they can, so they will. No matter what. If there's a spot, it will be filled. I've had people join in who are random, and we brigged them because they literally always caused chaos and didn't speak English.

The only lining I wish would happen, would be a grace-period. If a crew mate disconnects, or leaves voluntarily, your current crew is maybe set on a 5-10 minute grace period that is "invite only" so it gives a friend some time to prepare, login, and join up without a random pirate intruding.

Most insta-brigging is from exactly this. 3 man team who doesn't want a fourth.

  • I'll echo this request. I bought the game cause it looks like a mellow fun game to hang out w/ friends and explore.

The Beta reveals, I can't invite a friend while in game, only at launch. There's no drop-in/drop-out gameplay w/ friends, you can't make a ship friends/invite only, and in fact, unless you head out solo, or have the exactly correct sized crew, you can't avoid rando' on your ship.

What a mess. I've already spent my money, so my own fault, but this takes the game from something I look forward to, straight to a game I will almost certainly never play for more than 20 minutes at a time before I get frustrated playing solo.

Great concept, but what a wasted opportunity. I'm an adult w/ kids and it's 'Rare' to find a few minutes, an hour here and there to play w/ friends online. If they can't drop-in/drop-out on an invite or friends-only ship it's a terrible drag.

This can break the game balance .. Maybe the servers send you in game instance because you are only 1 on your sloop, and choose this particular instance because you fill the max players/instance. Allowing instant crew enlarge option can break this process.

  • I like this a lot. I would also like it if they add an option to open your solo sloop up for a two man. That way I don’t have to log out then rejoin. Or when a friend logs on and wants to join me I don’t have to make him wait for me to turn in all my chests before I log out. The only problem I see out of this is server issues where if the server is full people will have to wait in a que to get. Then it might just be quicker to log out.

  • Yes!Yes!yes!Arrr!

  • Yeah I want this aswell. I always play solo, but sometimes my daughter likes to join with me, so when she leaves the game I want to carry on soloing it, but a random always appears and most of the time they screw up my voyage or whatever I'm doing (even had a random take my ship while I was on an island chicken hunting, then went and sunk it losing the animals I spent ages collecting)

  • Agree wholeheartedly with this. Several times we've had to ask someone to leave or brig them to make room for a friend who was having connection trouble. It sucked for us and the stranger.

  • complete agree. we also have to brig or send messages. one turned into a brig after sending a message cause the person started throwing loot off the ship.

  • @pokesensei I am so "for" this! I'm not anti-social or anything. I will play this game different ways, at different times. Sometimes I will play solo, but most of the time I want to play the game with my daughter (who is a 12 hour drive away from me), and with two of my nephews joining us. We look at this as a great opportunity to enjoy a great game together. There will also be times where I may join in another crew, either on a sloop or on a galleon, randomly. The point being, I would like to have that degree of choice. Makes total sense to me.

  • @weepaperboats @LiebeErdBeer @SERGENT-C****R
Max capacity is not likely to be a problem, because they base the server population off ship encounter. Which means there is a very soft cap to player number. As an example, (not sure how many ships there can be in an instance but let's just say 10 for the example's sake) you could have a server with 10 sloops or a server with 10 full crew galleons, or 10 1-man galleons (each galleon had 3 people leave, hypothetically). That would give you very different numbers. A new premade full crew won't be able to join, but individual people would be able to join in, either invited or not.

  • @PokeSensei AYE!

Can already choose a Galleon with a max crew of Three.
Think it was Select Galleon then select reduced crew, allowed only three invites.

  • Yes please add crew settings. I think there needs to be an option where who ever has been on the ship the longest becomes Captain by default. By becoming Captain some ship or crew option menus open up. Locking or invite only crewsmates should be one of those options.

  • I posted a similar question and was told that Rare had stated they were working on a fix for this issue, but it might not be in at launch. It wouldn't affect balance, since I believe servers are balanced around ship count rather than player count. Allowing people to group with friends but on separate ships would be an issue.

I can't quite understand why this wasn't in from the start though. If I know I'll be joined by a friend in 10-15 minutes, there's no real reason for me to have to abandon my voyage and leave the game to get a friend on my sloop that I've been sailing around in solo.

  • Yes it's extremely important that Rare understands this and implements it. I hope they at least see it though. The original post has over 30 upvotes lol.

  • I think they'll add this if they haven't already. I have a theory it wasn't in the beta because they wanted as many people playing as possible, but an official comment from Rare would go a long way.

In that case it's worth joining up in the lobby and choosing "small galleon crew", which is just 3 people. I don't get why you'd just instabrig randos instead of doing 3 from the outset and saving yourself the trouble and possibly innocent randos from grief.

Some people don't pay attention. The same kind who brig others who only want to play for having the audacity to be dropped into their crew.

  • @pokesensei - Agreed. I am convinced that w lot of reasons people join a game only yo immediately get locked in the bright is because the crew doesn't actually want a 4th person, but this mate left early. So they lock the newcomer up, ignore them, and hope they just leave.

Have seen this happen. It sucks, but it's what players are going to do when they can't close that 4th slot out when their mate gets off. Guarantee that letting folks clow off their crew will reduce these instances of 'brig griefing'.
