Suggestion for better ship balancing

  • I understand that the focus of the game is playing with a crew, but sometimes we do not have anyone to play with and we do not want to go in with unknown people. Sometimes we just want to do our quests alone. And this is a problem.

The small ship is rather slow and fragile, I understand that this makes the journey more difficult, but playing alone is more difficult than playing in a group.

The fact that the small ship is slower is what bothers me the most. The number of cannons being 1 to 1 player is up ok, but it being slow besides being pretty bad, goes against almost everything the real pirates do. In almost every study of existing pirates, pirates have always preferred to use small ships, precisely because they are lighter, quicker and easier to maneuver. I believe that leaving the small ship with more speed than the big would be ideal, then it would have some advantage.

I think this would make the game more balanced.

  • If you angle your sails so the wind is behind them, those ships really move at a fast rate. Though I think there are a lot of things that need fit for solo players, the ship as is, is just fine

  • But the small ships are not fastest than the big one.

  • I was able to take down 2 galleons because I was able to out maneuver them and get shots off playing solo. If you increase there speed to be faster I tho k it will break the game, everyone would never go back to the galleon.

  • Small ship is slower than the large ship but this is good. You can turn faster with a small ship and it's more difficult to hit a small ship.

I would recommend you to play longer with a small ship. You will see it's better (and faster (not in speed)) than a large ship. Use the rocks in the sea and you will see ;)

  • Small ship are faster than large ship !
If you take the wind correctly, no one can outspeed you !

That's all the point of the game :
Galleon : large and slow but large fire power
Sloop : agile and speed but low fire power

  • Sloops go faster than the Galleon when going directly against the wind.

Galleons are faster than the sloop when going with the wind.

  • I thing the way it is, works for now.
Being realistic, bigger ships must be faster. Thay have more and bigger sails!
But their harder to manueve. So, this is the point. A galleon does not sink me this easy. What i purpose is that alone sailers join other battles. I mean, when a see a galleon shotting a small shipp and persuing it just for fun i help the other guy!! So lets get together against this situations. On time, we are going to get so skilly on a small boat that galleons will thing twice before chalenge our aloner cominut!!! So lets sink these b******s. I sunk one myself, alone. And killed one of their pirates before delivers hes chest and sold it myself. LETS PIRATE THEM BACK INSTEAD OF KEEP ASKING FOR BALANCE. I wanna see a post of these 4 man crew complainig about how dificult is to fight 2 or 3 shipps at the same time. Lets make teir game play as dificult as ours! Lets sink them while stoped on islands, while on outposts! Lets kill them all!! Lets get together againts them, forme a silent comunity, this game is made to be build by human nature on this pirate universe, dispite of being arrested on algoritime or math interactions against computers.

  • pirates don't pilot ships by themselves solo with no crew either, so your comparison is bad.

And if you had experience sailing on a galleon you'd realize you can hardly ever catch a sloop unless they don't know the game yet.

  • Small ships have never been faster than bigger ships.

  • Realistically, small ships are slower than big ships. It has to do with hull size and displacement of the water, as well as larger sails.

  • I actually enjoy a small ship quite a lot.

  • the sloop doesnt need more speed, its faster against the wind than the galleon and can out maneuver it too. Its balanced sailing wise.

  • realistically, in a golden age of piracy, pirates always preferred smaller and faster ships, or even more common was Sloop. They used to catch these ships, full of crew and cannons, making it easier to work. Looted fast and go away fast. But this is not the point here. When I played the Sea of Thieves pre alpha, the game was pretty unbalanced. Perhaps they have improved, but the small ship is still too slow.

  • I agree, too many times now me and a friend have just been chased around for hours on end because there's simply nothing you can do against a proper Galleon with the little ship, only thing working so far is dropping the anchor for a sharp turn, or leaving the ship to sail out of bounds while you swim to the nearest island hoping they didn't see you jump. It's just not fun when there's nothing you can do.

  • Sloop doesnt need to be faster. You have to learn to utilize it better. Against a galleon, sail into the wind. Use your turn speed advantage to sail into areas with hazards that galleons wont want to follow you directly into. You have to practice handbrake turns, and also switching quickly between sail adjustment and the helm. Things like knowing where the wind will be when you complete a turn so you can adjust sails ahead of time, or go straight into adjustment rather than looking at the sail and figuring it out. One thing I haven't done yet... utilize explosive barrels. It's difficult, but it can be done. But, it's SUPPOSED to be difficult.

  • @lucid-stew I know how to use it, I'm just relying on real ships, although the game is not very realistic in most of the things we do when we sail on a real ship. So much that drop the anchor with the ship moving should seriously damage it in the hull, catching a strong wind with the mismatched sails should break the mast, but I do not think this is the goal of the game.

  • @barbatargas in the old beta with the vids i have watched im pretty sure that used to be a thing

  • @brandonblk The beta that I say was one that we could not divulge or record anything, the one that the gamertag kept walking across the screen.

  • @barbatargas uhm, what about the multiple twitch streams, and the yogscast videos/hatfilms (and a bunch of other people) clearly filmed during the first closed beta

  • @brandonblk I think we're not talking about the same beta, if I'm not mistaken, what I'm talking about was the pre-alpha, and this, if I'm not mistaken, was not disclosed, only a few received the invitation by email.

  • @barbatargas idk, take a look for yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wuqmwr3YKfg

  • @brandonblk Yes, we are not talking about the same beta.

  • @fitz0uille this is simply not true had a galleon chasing me right behind me i had the best possible angle on the sails he still caught up to me.
