How do you organize a 4 man crew?

    Every group has their own way of doing it. I'm curious what you folks found works best.

    I like to have specific roles designated per person, depending on the situation. Usually it goes as follows.

    General sailing

    • Captain- Steers the ship, controls aft mast, chooses the sequence of a quest
    • Firat Mate- Controls the mid mast and drops anchor, reads the map
    • Quartermaster- Controls the forward mast, also the secondary lookout
    • Boatswain- Repairs the boat, serves as lookout in the crow's nest, and musical entertainment

    In early naval battle (distance fighting)

    • Captain- Helps Gunners with their aim (higher, lower)
    • All other crewmates- Gunners

    In close battle (collison, docked ship invasion)

    • Captain- Fights on the top deck, defends ship. ALWAYS SINKS WITH THE SHIP
    • First Mate- Boards enemy ship, fights for control of the top deck
    • Quartermaster- Boards enemy ship, goes below deck searching for treasure/enemies
    • Boatswain- Stays on ship, first to repair

    Helmsmen, works the wheel, aft sail, and 4 cannon. (Usually the newest member)

    Navigator, reads the map, feeds mission direction to helm. Helps move sails, First for damage control, 1st cannon.

    Engineer, moves sails, 2nd to work damage control, second cannon.

    Battlemaster, spotter on front or top of ship, drops anchor, decider of all things tactical. 3rd damage control, 3rd cannon.

    I delegate out more or less depending on crew exp. If you're worth your salt, you need no direction just have fun and communicate.
    Standard operating procedure is usually prepare ship for departure, then gather the crew on deck and explain assignments.
    Captain - Does the Captain things, directs the quartermaster, mans the Helm, stays aboard ship.
    QuarterMaster - Carries out Capt's orders, directs the crew, other duties as assigned or as situation requires. QuarterMaster has authority to command crew w/o Capt's permission.
    Crew 1 & 2 - Assigned to Fore and Main sail, man cannon closest to assigned sail. Fore crew doubles as prow watch. Middle crew doubles as damage control.

    In terms of Sea of Thieves, I believe this would work best for me:

    General Sailing:

    1 helmsman (Steering & aft sail management).
    1 in the crow's nest to relay nav information to the helm & keep a lookout.
    1 to work the main mast sails.
    1 to work the forward sails.

    Battle at Sea:

    1 helmsman (Steering & aft sail, as well as to take shots with sniper).
    2 men on cannons (also in charge of forward and main mast sails, as well as the anchor should the bootleg maneuver be needed).
    1 man to relay navigation info to helmsman, and double as the designated repair person for hull damage.

    When boarding an enemy vessel:

    2 board the enemy vessel
    2 (Helmsman and 4th crew member) stay on ship and provide fire support.

    Secondary order for helmsman and 4th crew memeber IF the situation calls for this - 4th crew member boards the enemy vessel while helmsman remains on ship.

    I haven't had much finding a dedicated crew yet and so I find it's very fluid in using the matchmaker or even the lfg tool on Xbox. But my ideal setup is basically what op was saying.

    Captain:
    Makes all the decisions based on the info provided by his crew i.e. Where to go what to do and whether to fight
    Calls out all desicions for naval combat
    Stay with the ship at all times unless at an outpost and under certain circumstances
    Steers the ship
    Shares duty of aft sail with Quarter Master

    Master of Sailing:
    Tends to the map and relays his understandings to the captain i.e. Locating distance and direction to outposts and islands of interest.
    Controls main mast, dictates wind direction and calls the for which directions sails need to be turned
    Shares in duty with Quarter Master and MoA cannon fire when directed
    Shares in duty with Quarter Master repairs
    Stays on ship unless directed to
    Shares in duty with MoS boarding action

    Master of arms:
    Controls fore sail changing in direction as MoS or Captain dictates
    Main look out from the prow alerting captain of nearby points of interest
    Keeps stock of canonball inventory and keeps cannons loaded
    Calls out which side the enemy vessel is on
    Shares in duty with MoS and Quarter Master
    with cannon fire
    Lead expeditionary making sure too grab everything not nailed down
    Protects Quarter Master while he returns to ship with the booty
    Decides tactics on land battles
    Shares duty with Quartermaster in locating the aforementioned booty
    Shares in duty with MoS boarding actions

    Quarter Master:
    Keeps stock of planks and bananas and the storage of valuables
    First man to repair boat dictates wether MoS is required
    Shares in duty with captain aft sail control
    Shares in duty with MoS and MoA in cannon fire
    Secondary expeditionary force
    Shares duty in locating treasure and collecting supplies
    Carries the treasure back to the ship and dictates storage
    Can be used as secondary lookout from the crow's nest
    But it never works out this way. I tend to not captain as I love navigation too much,but if I was this would be my ideal crew setup

    everyone should do everthing in my opinion. Just one role as a captian, the one that stears. He just says "sails" or "anker", and the rest should follow. Works perfectly for my crew. Last beta we sunk 10 ships and didn't get sunk one time. If everone has one job they don't really feel responsible for the rest of the ship. And things get chaotic and then your roles don't work out.

    @x-snowklown-x Making an alliance, is a cowards way. Especially when the servers have limited players. I for one will be sinking your people, and reporting them for unsportmans conduct. If I catch them sailing with several ships.

    @dalinoge I would love to see you try if I see you I’ll be more then happy too sink people like you multiple times. It will either be me or my crew so goodluck on the sea buddy, might want to get your money back now while you still can. Otherwise you are going to hate this game because you are officially a target. 😈

    IMO captain shouldn't be steering. captain should be in a position to give orders and should be able to see his surroundings. it makes sense to, me that, the captain should be at the fore end of the ship and have quick access to cannons, sails, and map.
    they take feed back on surroundings from whoever is in the crows nest, and gives orders to the helmsman about which direction they need to steer the ship. they assists the last crewmate with sails and also are in charge of navigation and making sure the ship is on coarse.

    me and my friends use this formation for general sailing between islands. we use a couple more formations for battle and chasing but those are trade secrets, my friends. gotta keep that edge in battle. cant have every ship as organized as mine! YAR!

    @christhulicia I play with friends! We figured out how we like to operate from experience and talked about it.

    • Captain- Lingers about the forecastle as lookout and navigation, he chooses destination, gives heading to the wheel, occasionally assists with forward sail, can drop anchor whenever he chooses, and determines course of action in naval battle. He can assign his pirate crew about the ship on special tasks as he sees fit. He rarely looks at the ship because he trusts the crew so much, so his eyes are looking outward taking into account all the factors of wind, light, sight, rocks, wave, storm, destination, compass direction, etc.
    • Helmsman/First Mate- Controls the wheel, occasionally trims aft sail, and makes requests for specific sail adjustments, so he's the one actually determining ship speed. His eyes are usually full of sail, and can see little beyond the compass, so it makes sense for the captain to tell him what to set the compass too and then for the Helmsman to talk about trimming sail. Our Helmsman could almost replace the captain, but he's just so valuable and skilled at the wheel, so he's kinda like the First Mate- in charge when the Captain can't be found.
    • Linesmen/Crewmen- Primary responsibility is trimming sails. Each linesman stays on their side of the ship, either port or starboard. There's a lead and a follow linesman. Lead linesman announces what sail she's working on so follow linesman can work the cleat/pulley on his side to match it, so sails can be angled or furled as rapidly as possible. When there isn't a lot to do, linesmen can climb the crow's nest and play lookout or generally do whatever. They typically fall overboard.

    Our captain too stays with the ship at all times, proficient at all tasks he can easily sail the Galleon on his own, either when the rest of the crew is on the island or perhaps off the ship during combat.

    Making alliances is "unsportmans"? Hmm. Report me then. Had a little fun sailing with another ship this morning. Our hurdy-gurdy tunes drifted to and fro across the racing waves...
