Physical Puzzles for quest and secret quests (side quests)??

  • These are just questions for ideas to add to the game.
Up Vote If You Like This Post Or Ideas

Are there going to be Physical puzzles like moving mirrors, weights and other physical, in game, interactions that are not only just music or shine a light puzzle?

Would there be possible, secret quests like secret puzzles that spawn on islands that are not apart of the main quests (maps, missions, or riddles). Secret quests as in puzzles that are not known but can be found on islands if your exploring, something you can come across, similar to a message in the bottle quest but have no obvious giveaways like shining sparks, no map, and no directions. Just clues that are in your surroundings, close by or across the island, or even clues leading to another island, something that makes the player really need to think and or see. Maybe quest or secret quests that require day or night to see or do. But have the secret quests be not connected to any physical quests to encourage players to explore and keep an open mind. I know things like this could make players take time to find, a puzzle that may or may not have spawned on the island that they are searching on, those who do find these secret quest puzzles will be lucky, but even if found solving the puzzle could be hard.

Also for the riddles do you plan on having ridiculous riddles that require the player to be precise like,

walk south 5 paces, then take a right for 7 paces, then go east 3 paces, then go left 8 paces, then go north 4 paces, then west 4 paces.

Some crazy trickery in the words to confuse the player, like a pirate may do to confuse those who are not themselves trying to find where their loot is at.

Another thing for riddles if not already in the game. What if we had riddles that are either given or found from the bottles that require players to remember unique landmarks on either every island or on a random number of islands big and small, encouraging players to remember things on their travels, these riddles would have no names of the islands on the clue, dont make this only for highier level pirates, make these riddles avilable to all and is either randomly given from quest givers or found from bottles.

Overall point of above, have riddles that require exploration and knowledge from previous travels, have some riddles that give only clues of unique landmarks with no name of the islands.

Remember, what i mean by secret puzzles, I mean a puzzle that is seprate from voyage quests and any other quest that is given to you that fills the map slots, puzzles that are on the island it self, in the open or hidden, somthing that is needed to be looked for, Not Given Out like a shinny star saying come here.

  • @fresherfoot Been thinking this for a while. It's such an obvious idea we might expect this in full release :)

  • @fresherfoot I don't see why they couldn't, personally I find the riddle voyages to be the most fun. The first time I lifted a lantern in the right spot felt pretty good (my crew spent what felt like an hour on that island).

I wouldn't mind some more obscure riddles but I wouldn't want them to have super easter egg hidden in the code of this web-page levels of obscure, I'm not counting the number of leaves on the most NE plant along with the number of ribs on a skeleton on another island to find the coordinates to the next clue(actually I'd probably do that). But if you are after the treasure rather then the riddle you would most likely vote for a new voyage.

  • @zelemon37 I hope, I hope, can I get upvotes on this post so it may be seen by devs

  • @fistoesquire I'm talking about a puzzle separate from the riddle voyages, puzzles that spawn on the islands like how shipwrecks spawns but these puzzles don't have directions or maps, or if they are maps, the maps are painted on a rock or something but not the island may be a rock with just a shape of a monument or something and dashing lines like paces or steps. But these are things that spawn on the islands not permanent and not guaranteed to be on the same island or the same secret quest

  • @fistoesquire separate from quests that are actually given or found, no clues in your pocket

  • I love this idea, give us more puzzles. I would love to see puzzles based upon landmarks, like find the island near the 2 dolphins..... There are so many landmarks they could use for additional puzzle quests.

  • That would be ace, puzzles made out of candles, stone, wood, cannon balls etc

I would personally go MAD if I come across riddles like this. But then again, that might be a good thing!

I love the idea of puzzles where you need physical objects.

Imagine a cave holding Treasure Chests, but the cave has been walled in and the entrance needs to be cleared with a Gunpowder Barrel.

Also, I like your idea of having to use your photographic memory while exploring and adding clues as to what island your voyage leads to, rather than just stating the name or giving you a treasure map of the island.
By playing only the Closed Beta and Scale Tests, I'm already pretty much able to tell the names of the islands by looking at treasure maps. So I'm guessing that finding your treasure map islands on the main map of your ship will become less and less challenging.
If you add riddles like the following, veteran players will know what their voyage's destination is.

"Our ship, the Blackwyche got stranded on an island during a storm. The crew's survivors managed to build a raft from the remains of our ship and return to mainland, but were forced to leave their treasure behind, hidden on the island."

Yep, that's right! We're headed for Shipwreck Bay!
Upon arrival the text would then update on the back of the parchment and continue as a normal riddle, or reveal a treasure map with "X marks the spot".
I would only add these kinds of riddles for players that have achieved a certain reputation with the different factions. For new players they will be way too tedious to solve.

In any case, extra puzzles, secrets, easter eggs, etc... are always an awesome and worthwhile addition.

  • There are some really great ideas here! I enjoy seeing peoples thoughts on additional engaging activity on the islands. Remember, however, that the longer you spend on an island, the more susceptible you would be to other pirate attacks. Additional puzzles that only give you gold would be something I'd only do if I didn't have any treasure on my ship. And even then, if someone sank my boat anyways, I'd be stranded and annoyed that I spent time solving an environmental puzzle where the rewards aren't worth it.

Now if these challenges gave you something other than a voyage item (Chest, skull, or trade goods) that might be worth it. A really challenging environmental puzzle that rewards a new hat, beard, sword, etc. would be really awesome. That way, when other pirates see you, they'll know you got a really rare set of clothing/equipment from exploring the most secret parts of the seas/islands.

There is an awesome idea, other loot that is not just the normal treasure. What if those loots was an in a box or something requiring players to have to take them to the shop to turn it in to unlock that loot,

I think the best thing about the idea of having these secret quests that may require time to figure out to solve is other pirates, other pirates would add tension, a level of fear and decision making, do I continue? do I stop and the first dispatch the opponent? do I have my buddy take the ship and leave to direct the attention? This would make a level of worry in players which would actually make the game more fun, even if you do lose everything and wasted your time to lose what you got,

But one important note, I'm talking about these Secret puzzles being things that do spawn on islands that are not obvious, Since these do spawn like the shipwrecks and the random barrels in the sea, they would despawn either after looted or after you have left the radius of the spawn, also it could be posible that if you left the area and you were then placed in another domaine in which ships are now on the horizon, if you were to head back to the island that had the puzzle but for what ever reason you left the island and the island dose not have you or a buddy on it to keep it in your own domain, then once you return this puzzle may or may not be there anymore because no one was on the island and you may have been shifted to anothe domain with other players and or the puzzle simply despawned from out of range (I think I typed this just fine, but if needed to be better clarified plz ask).

  • @fresherfoot I'm happy that people are pleased with these ideas, keep up the upvotes so then it may be seen more and may be seen by the devs! Thank you all for your input :)

I think that would be a lot of work for the devs: each island has a number of limited features, and with time I have already picked up the same maps and riddles a couple times. Once you discover a riddle on an island, you'd always go and see if it reset so you can have some bonus loot. So it would require a lot of balancing out but harder riddles that can only be solved with knowledge are a pretty cool idea.

I think that another good feature would be to expand the things you have to do with the riddle puzzles, like beside having to raise a lantern, or the map, or playing whatever song, it would be cool to have to throw a bucket of water (or vomit) onto a precise landmark, or maybe blow it up with a gunpowder barrel or cannonball to open secret passages or doors

  • Loving the idea. Tho I do agree that depending on the nature of the puzzle it could be difficult to implement since it would possibly change an island? Unless it's something small, similar to a cave entrance that opens up.

Could also be like a secret door that spawns randomly in places that actually takes you to the puzzle location, which wouldn't be accessible any other way. That would allow for larger and more physical puzzles, even jumping ones maybe, without having to do major changes to existing islands.

Was also thinking we could even have special chests that require you to take it to certain places at certain times, or maybe just interact with it in certain ways to make it open.

And I agree that the rewards should be something cosmetic for either your character or your ship that you can show off. Titles would work too I guess :)

  • I would absolutely love it if we had a lit torch and we had to interact by lighting a firepit. That pit would open a secret stairwell in an ancient ruin. That ruin would either have another quest step or lead to a boss battle. Maybe the lost remains of Cpt. Blunderbuss or something unique that you have to fight to free him of the curse. It could include timed events too. So maybe exactly 6 pm you have to be there to do so. Something very interesting. I am so excited about the potential.

  • these are all cool ideas, although kind of time consuming to realize.
I'd be content initially to just have a little more things to do with riddles (like I wrote before).
