Let's talk about Griefing and Trolling.

    Griefing Definition -
    A griefer is a player in a multiplayer video game who deliberately irritates and angers other players within the game, using aspects of the game in unintended ways.

    Trolling Definition -
    In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting quarrels or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal, on-topic discussion, often for the troll's amusement.

    Hello there everyone and welcome, I am here to talk to you about players on the forum who are wrongly name shaming, complaining about and harassing other players because they think/have been trolled/griefed by them in game.
    First of all I want to tell you guys what is and what is not trolling and/or griefing.

    In-Game:

    • Killing Players
      This is a game mechanic, if you are killed 5 times by a player, that player is not griefing or trolling you. At the moment, it is a game mechanic and one that we all must respect. If you are being killed you have the option to either scuttle/run/fight them. If that doesn't work then you can always change server.

    • Harassing and disrupting your own crews gameplay from releasing the anchor, crashing their boat, locking them in the brig for no reason, throwing your treasure overboard, discriminating your crewmates due to sexuality/gender/race.
      This is 100% trolling,there is no problem about people asking for help on the forums about players doing any of these things, but remember, do not name and shame them. Report them and move on.

    • Spawn Killing a Player at the Mermaid
      This is a tricky topic because it is indeed a game mechanic, though it is not easy to kill someone before they respawn, I have indeed myself tried this in-game and 8 times out of 10 they respawn before you can even hit them. On the other hand, those players who respawn and try to board your ship and refuse to go to the mermaid end up as the ones being spawn killed constantly from my own knowledge. I would say at the moment it is a problem but is not griefing/trolling as it is apart of the game mechanics and a lot of the time, you end up spawn killing enemy pirates to protect your own ship from being boarded and your treasure stolen.

    • Teaming with other ships to hunt other ships
      This is not trolling/griefing this is a game mechanic, they have even said they encourage players to do this, to take down bigger ships.

    • Competitive Banter
      Saying things such as "Get Rekt" "Easy" "Noob" "Is this easy mode" and things along that line are fine, we all do it, though I would say don't say it to their faces. Though harassing someone due to Race/Gender/Voice/Sexuality is a simple No. This is not banter or words along those lines, that is harassment. Also don't use personal insults, try to still be friendly and respectful while playing the game. I myself don't use voice chat unless someone talks to me!

    On-Forums:

    • Name Shaming
      I have seen many players accusing players or griefing them when infact, they haven't. If someone kills you in game and it upsets you, log off and take a break, relax and play when you have calmed down. But they are not in the wrong for killing you. It is a game mechanic, enemy pirates do not have to be friendly. But as soon as you go onto the Forum, complaining, ridiculing or harassing a player and use their name for hate. You are now the griefer/troll, you are the one trying to get someone bullied and harassed.
    • Sharing your opinion and disagreeing with others.
      Be respectful to those who you disagree with, but this is absolutely fine and you should try to combat others opinion, this helps us all learn from the community.

    Be respectful guys, don't name shame and have fun.

    Sure spawn killing isn't against mechanics, but that does make you a lame pirate who isn't noble. Savor your victory and move on, don't ruin the game for all.

    Some of us don't want to be noble, and protecting your treasure and eliminating all threats are all that matters to some of us. This is a pirate game not a Knight game. Thank you for your opinion though.

    @jamiethe1egend Plunder away all you want, but what is the point of killing folk who try to get to their Mermaid or docked at an outpost? Kill them a couple times if you want but after that there is no excuse really. You aren't doing anything illegal but you sure aren't a cool guy. Part of the Pirate Code does say to be jolly and friends so....

    These people who complain about dying by every means ought to stay as the minority, I hope.

    It kind of pains me that people complain about this game being unfriendly PVE pretty much because another player CHOSE to be a lot more hostile than they imagined.

    It's a game about pirates and you sink other ships for their plunder... or fun. I'm a bit of both.

    For outposts, you should be able to see ships close by before you dock. It's up to you to find a safer and more quieter outpost to do your business. It's really the player's fault for docking at an outpost nearby a population of players.

    Well, to be honest when I have been in that situation this is what happened.

    We were a 3 man crew, and a 1 man crew attacked us and we destroyed him in a cannon battle and went away, we stopped at a island and started doing our voyage when he came back and hit us from the side, we killed him and sunk him again and guarded our ship until he left. (We had Treasure) He kept swimming towards us and we just blundered him off our ropes for about 30 minutes, he was persistent and just kept coming, we got bored of it and started sniping him from our ship at his mermaid as his intentions were clear, he wanted to keep coming. As soon as he died 4 times next to the mermaid, he soon respawned to get away. @Sager2210 @MyCrystalwings were my crew and can back me up.

    Also, just because it is in the game does NOT mean what you do with it is what the developers intended. It sounds like OP spent a great deal of time being a sea menace instead of a jolly pirate. Name calling in general is funny, but childish. Idk, I'm in my 20's so I'm not going to call a teenager names or make someone get upset by spawn killing them. I'd rather everyone enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, this weekend we ransacked several chests from a galleon and when we saw them coming to us again we sunk them. And again. The fourth time we waved and went our way.

    But not once did we actively seek these people out or their mermaid to kill them. Don't be a coward, let them get a new ship and give them a chance ya bilge rat!

    @sonofbruuf I think the issue isn't people complaining about pve or pvp as you are trying to make it out, it is excessive spawn camping etc. You want to bring up being real pirates well in real life you didn't get to respawn so don't try that.

    I for one think if you sail the Sea of Thieves you outta know you are going to get killed so, suck it up and be ready. There is no PVE or PVP zones so when you leave your post you know the risks, so don't be sad when you lose your booty and ship.

    They can get a new ship quite easily.

    #1 You spawn under the water and can click respawn on the mermaid before they see you.
    #2 It tends to be players who are trying to fight back when they have lost who are complaining about it
    #3 You have your way to play the game, don't tell others they need to play the game you play it because you dislike their way. The developers even said if you wish not to do voyages and hunt others for their loot, that is a way you can play the game and level up! IT IS INTENDED by the developers to hunt players down or it would be PVE.

    When I hear they were killed over and over for 5 min, I just figure they don't understand scuttle mechanic. A good scuttle from the jolly roger will get you out of a death loop.
    In time these things will go away....I hope
    I had guys complaining that the ship we sunk kept spawning by our ship. Did they lift anchor to float away no, did they wait and let sharks do jobs for us no, they just complained that it wasn't fair as they dove in water after other teams chests. Over and over again this went on. I am like "float away sharks will come". I suggested that we circle boat and shoot them from our boat till they get on mermaid and leave. Finally they listened and learned it wasn't games fault. We shot them like fish in barrel once we got anchor up. With help from sharks even. So many Players drop anchor by ship that they just sunk and are like "why are they spawning here"

    IF you read what I said, I'm not against PVP at all. Matter of fact you know the risk. What I'M against is mermaid camping if that crew is obviously trying to get out, or outpost camping new players. Play how you want, just makes you a coward in my eyes if you are scared of an even fight.

    Also, your #2 is an assumption, that's just your excuse to defend it. I know people fight unfairly because I was on a galleon and we continuously wrecked a crew lol, just we decided to move on because they obviously didn't have the seafaring down yet or at our level.

    Once again, it isn't against the game mechanics and isn't illegal. Just makes you a pirate who is scared of a fair fight.

    Id rather everyone enjoy the game too, but you can bring a player to SoT, but you can’t make them sink. Wait you can’t make them not sink ;).. lol imo with spawning as terribly designed as we saw in the alpha mermaid spawn killing is the fastest way to show a crew they had better not make another attempt, and also the most effective, I get the whole perspective of being a noble pirate or whatever, but idk why that matters if you just had to sink them anyways when they attacked. You can still be loyal and trustworthy and noble, and completely and unquestionably destroy crews and give them no course of action except to leave you alone or try with a new ship, which again is only a problem because of the spawn system.

    All in all I think beyond aggressive voice chat and inner crew trolling the real solution here is rare fixing the spawning.

    Beyond that it’s the attitude you have when you play. Getting mad for pvp in this game is like getting mad if you don’t get first place in pubg every game. An unrealistic expectation, and I’m not comparing the games based on design or intent for gameplay for the record

    But if you played the game, if your voyage is at the island, that their mermaid is, and they refuse to respawn, they are the ones affecting your gameplay. I would rather get my loot and hand it in, over killing some player who is trying to board my ship. But you have to sometimes when they don't choose to respawn. Respawning is the easy part. You have ammo/reloading and to aim to kill a player, they need to press f as soon as they spawn and underwater. You can out respawn a gunshot. It is a projectile too.

    Games are ment to be enjoyed not endured this kind of thing damages a games reputation , we're not real pirates this is just a game and bullies should not be encouraged I totally agree that peaple should play the way they want , but surly not at the expense of others enjoyment , which is why there should be a hardcore option .

    @jamiethe1egend Yeah that's fine kill them then lol. That was NEVER what I was conveying so I don't get the pivot out of no where. Also, you never even mentioned that scenario in your post. If you are being attacked then duh defend, kill those scallywags! I'm talking about you defending name calling kids and camping the darn mermaids when people try to get back to their ship.

    "But if you played the game..." yeah I played it, which is how I know fella.

    I usually wait if shot at then go for it, get followed release the grief.

    Everyone will have their own,opinions of what is troll & grief but we all have hunted ships and end up being same ones due to the fact only around 6 ahips in a server right now so exit enter new server easy

    @luckynedpepper I just think that all it takes for people to perceive a player “pvping only to cause grief for the other players” is like almost anything at this point, if you laugh or show you are happy at the same time becuase you just had fun playing and sunk someone, and the person is mad they got sunk, people tend to just grasp at straws and blame others for their lack of skill, dosnt mean the reason people sink ships is to ruin other people’s fun. That’s just life it seems, with any form of competition where people don’t realize that they shouldn’t get mad either way.

    I can’t count how many times I hear someone in halo or have myself been like “oh you expletive” for them to get on the mic or vice versa, have a little banter and then team up for the next game or whatever. Then you have the crying victims who will demonize and judge you like they are god becuase you are having a good time playing and they aren’t, so you become their way to vent.

    I really think from my experience that trolls are pretty rare, but maybe I’m just used to beating or ignoring them because I have gamed so much my whole life.

    You basically have to though if they drop chests when they sink.

    Unless you sunk them to leave the chests behind.

    I think there will be updates that make it easier for players, I think they should add a respawn in a new ship option for when you are in the ferry of the damned, so you can choose to go to the mermaid or just straight to a new ship.

    For someone who defends name calling

    Name calling is personal such as "You are dumb" "You are thick headed" it is personal and is normally started with you or you are. If you read my post you would see I never defended name calling and actually say don't do it in voice chat. But saying things such as Easy or Get rekt, isn't personal or attacking.

    @jamiethe1egend If your goal is to protect your treasure, go ahead. But don't come crying on the forums about just wanting to protect your treasure if you're a 4 man crew spawn-camping a solo-player that just wants to turn in his treasure aswell.

    @capt-player I made this post to stop others from crying about griefing/trolling. Also to be honest if a Solo Man has treasure and we attack them and steal it, its our treasure now. I play mostly 2 and 3 man. Solo players complain a lot though.

    @jamiethe1egend Not saying it's not your treasure fair and square, but leave it at that. Take my treasure and let me leave for my next voyage. Besides, i only ever do a maximum of 2 voyages after one another, so the loss is never too great if i get plundered. Max like 5 chests depending on the size of the voyages.

    You can spawn kill on a boat too, I know once as a 2 man we killed another 2 man and they had 5 treasure chests, me and my friend took turns spawn killing them and handing their chests in. Then we left once we got all their chests. Its a cruel world but at the end of the day thats what you sign up for!

    @jamiethe1egend I completely agree, it's the most fun i've had in a game for a while, even when you're on the losing end. I'm not gonna get salty if you spawnkill me when taking my treasure, but when my treasure is all turned in, i'd appreciate if you left me alone, and didn't continue killing me, so i could get the most out of my limited school-occupated time and just go on my next voyage to try again.
