Venus Mantrap

  • A mobile, carnivorous plant. (Like in Spelunky) It can be requested by the Merchant's Alliance, and trapped in a cage. Should it touch a player, the player will instantly be killed and become lunch. Should it bump into a chest, it will eat it. Upon death, it's digestions will be released.

It has a great variety of emergent uses, beyond as an enemy and as cargo. Such as:

Set it loose on an enemy ship to clear the decks and turn the foe into lasagna.

Need to stash a chest? Hide it in the plant!

Or the ultimate trap: Let it eat a powder keg, then let it loose on the enemy ship. The enemy shoots it...

  • @wilbymagicbear Note: Players would not be trapped in the plant, they would die and respawn normally.

  • Maybe just have it randomly spawn around certain islands and instead of swallowing things it just holds them until sufficiently beaten. Would add a bit more to moving around islands than just scenery.

  • @inbred-chimera Yeah, the island spawns make sense.

  • @wilbymagicbear
This sounds like quite an interesting idea!
Along with @Inbred-Chimera's island spawn, & holding instead of killing i can see it being quite a good addition.
You would have to be very aware of your surroundings at all times whilst exploring islands just in case you accidentally got too close to one of the 'venus mantraps'! Then having to hit it to let you go, or slowly get eaten!
It could be made to look similar to the red flowers that grow on some islands already, making it harder to spot them ;)

  • Great idea, Im all for more environmental hazards QUICKSAND

Insta kill? How about it being immobilised first and then chomped? Like.. you can use your weapons to shoot from it (probably not the plant itself) for XY seconds before being chomped and dead. :) May also create some interesting situations.

    Environmental hazards sound awesome.

  • @revanjstone wow how has this not been thought of already? I guess it would be hard to balance since its pretty much guaranteed death.

Maybe quicksand could act normally for players without a chest but players holding a chest will move really slow in it and sink a little bit so they know whats happenning. This would cause a need for planned routes of extraction. Don't want skeletons catching up with you when you've got your hands full.

  • @revanjstone
Quicksand has been brought up before & i was all for that idea as well :) The more environmental hazards the more interesting treasure hunting & exploring would be!

  • @kgmshylian Thinking more on it, a slow death sounds more interesting and reasonable. Hopefully your crew is quick to respond!

  • @wilbymagicbear Yah should be slow and require teammates aid to survive or perhaps that grappling hook in your inventory everyone keeps asking for. Gota represent the solos somehow. Maybe just mario style jump til you get out haha but you take a bit of damage while in it or if you dont react quick enough or just slows you down for skellies.

OR put a venus man trap near all sand pits haha.
