Why we should be able to choose our own pirate names.

  • So I know it has been talked about in the past but I really think that it should be brought up again since the games release is just around the corner.

Many people have bad gamertags that don't really fit into the world of Sea of Thieves, "xxGam3rKiddxxHD" ...
It isn't really a name you would expect someone to have in a pirate game.
Most of us made our gamertags when we were younger and don't want to change our names because it costs quite a bit.

If I saw "Boot-Strap Bill" or "Captain Blunderbuss" I think the world would automatically become more immersive.

Having us pick our own Piratey names would also conceal our gamertags and would help to prevent people from joining parties instead of using the proximity chat you already have in the game.
There is a message that pops up if you are in a party so that means that Rare obviously wants us to use the in-game chat over talking in a party.

I guess this builds up how immersive the game is in every aspect really and it will also make it feel like you are escaping from your gamertag (which is used in other games) and then joining a world where you are referred to by your in game name.

Please make it a feature Rare.

  • @slipkick01 This would also remove all accountability in-game, because reporting toxic players would be impossible over XBL.
Since everyone would need a unique "Pirate" name, we'd also soon be out of "Captain Blunderbuss" and be on to "xXCptSniperbuss23Xx" anyway, completely defeating the purpose.
If your name is that terrible, changing it is actually not that expensive.

  • @slipkick01 Would like to have Pirate name for myself. Plus you are spot on when saying it will encourage more use of in game chat ☠

  • I honestly would love that. There is a pirate I loved from my childhood. If you were a kid/teen in the 90’s you prolly will remember him.

I wanna be the dreaded the feared the terrifying pirate CAPTAIN STICKYBEARD

  • @erikinthebakery Well there are ways around it. Perhaps you should be able to see their gamertags in the options or have it above their game name. Just like ARK.

  • I don't agree personally. I think it would get repetitive seeing every other person named Captain Jack lol

And if they made it so you can have multiple of the same name the numbers and "xX"s would start appearing after a week lol.

I think using your gamer tag also helps you build your pirate rep better. :)

  • @knifelife Edit: But being able to have the same name as someone else is even more realistic isn't it?

I can't agree with the third part of your comment.

  • @knifelife I would also still prefer too see xxCaptainJackxx over xxgam3rkiddxx

  • Elite: Dangerous put CMDR (Commander) in front of everyone's gamertag, adding a little more immersion for me. I would rather have that space used for fleet tags than for a blanket title abbreviation, though.

  • Can’t you just make a different profile with the Pirate name you want? I know your achievement score wouldn’t transfer, but then again I don’t care about all that like some people do.

  • This idea could be carried out by Rare. I believe it should be too. We always hear about becoming a pirate legend. You need the name to boot!

Parameters simply need to be set just like Xbox Live does to prevent the same exact name from appearing. The gamer tag could be accessed from a highlight option over another character like Destiny. Savvy?

  • I like my gamer tag for first-person shooters. I am not going to change it for one game.It is cleaver besides that! Au, as in gold, Gunslingin.

This brings me to another point! What is wrong with having a gamer tag similar but tweaked? That is why I am not AuGunslinger. It was taken! The other dude was clever like me!

  • @slipkick01 I know something that Dark Souls does. What it does is that you can name the character you are playing, and in the settings, you can change if you want to see other's player names or gamertags.

I agree, plus it doesnt ensure that the name they choose would be pirate themed. As I would choose some variant of my gamertag to keep things simple.

  • @akbar37 Already pre-ordered it and will be using tbe play anywhere feature so that wouldn't really work for me.

  • I also think players should be able to have a pirate name if they want one, but not mandatory. It would not replace their gamertag. Both names would be displayed above a players head, with one name being bigger than the other.

  • I very much agree that the names are an important aspect of the game and the immersion. I never understood the concept of that when "Jeff" picked his name, no other Jeff´s in the world can pick the same name.

Just allow the game engine to add a number ID after the name that you don´t see when highlighting a player, but the hardware does. If i click on three Jeff´s in the game, the hardware confirms my clicks in the logs with "Jeff#1 - Jeff#2 - Jeff#3".

    1: More immersion
2: More open options and realistic approach towards names
    3: Less "H4X0r" clutter
4: More usage of clan colors, flags, ID markings etc to ID your friends

Names are a huge part of a game for me, and nowadays when the amount of player interactions are a lot more part of everyday than before, the older names we have taken should not lock us in games at present day.

  • Back on xbox 360 the game Phantasy Star Universe was actually an online RPG where you could create up to 4 unique characters each with their own unique name. While in game you can have it display either the players gamertag or the character name. So the idea of pirate names while still keeping gamertags visible is completely do able. And yes that would be awesome to create our own pirate names

  • @slipkick01
I can see this being more hassle than it's worth!!
Yes, in theory it seems like a good idea, but after bumping into Captain Jack Sparrow 964011927 etc, it would wear a little thin.
If both gamertag & pirate name were displayed, that is just more clutter on screen.
Finally, you have to be in extremely close proximity to read the names anyway!! If you come across a well oiled crew & are close enough to read the names of the pirates, it's too late, you're already dead!!

  • @slipkick01 The problem on Ark was it was extremely hard to find out the actual gamer tag of someone who was Trolling/Greifing Ect, which later made them have to add the option to put in a feature so you could see it anyway. Which in my opinion made the whole thing pointless.

And i personally don't see any difference in xxxGamerkidxxx or a billion different ways to spell Captain Jack. If the person doesn't like there gamer tag just change it lol. But that's just me i suppose.

And i think its easier to build your "Rep" with your gamer tag because its your unique name. For example: KnifeLife is kind of recognizable, Yet if there is 50 different Captain Jacks (I like that example :P) If one of them does become a legend and known you will always be wondering what Jack it is. Where as you could just type KnifeLife in the search and find me easily.

  • In a game like SoT there has to be some accountability and a way for players to mute, block or report players to MS for any breach of the MS code of conduct. Or on the more positive side, send them a post-game friend request!

And while there may be ways do do both, the process would be made much more complicated if players were allowed to choose a different name in game.

  • I agree. This is how Monster Hunter does it. You create your hunters name separate from your Nintendo ID on the 3DS.its also going to be the same when world comes out on Xbox one and PS4. I can’t see any reason for it not to be achieveable when MH does it.

Surely you’d still be able to access their profile through their character name in game.

Either way I can’t see rare implementing this unfortunately, but I can’t see why they would not want to do this. 100% agree that I’d rather see a pirate themed name than XxXnosc0p3XxX. Just my two cents.

Please Rare, I know it’s a small thing at this late stage in development but something I and many others would appreciate.

  • Ok, so from what I can see MOST people generally want to make new pirate names to fit into the world of Sea of Thieves.

I guess this is really because the game has a constant "comedy feel" when you are playing it and people want to be able to give funny names to their characters that would be relevant to the game they are playing (Got one in mind for myself).

Some people argue about the fact that having your gamertag hidden is going to stop people from being able to report others, and I have in the past, reported somebody for outrageous trolling in Sea of Thieves so I can see where you are coming from.

Others also argue about Ark's system of revealing peoples gamertags as well as their in-game name on the same screen which can be visually unpleasing and I agree.

Both of these can be worked around.
If the players gamertags and in-game names were shown in the options menu where you can vote players to the brig etc then neither of these problems would exist.

Some people aren't going to be playing the game for the comedy aspect and that's fine, you can name your character after a famous adventurer if you like exploring or just make up any name yourself.

Some people want to be able to have unique names that, when they are taken, will not be able to be used by any other player in all of Sea of Thieves and to be honest I was one of those people up until today.

I think that being able to have the same name as somebody else makes the game realistic and doesn't deny them of calling themselves whatever they want after all it is Rares goal to have everyone create the pirate of their dreams.

This all really depends on what the majority of players want but I really want the game to turn out like the way I described above.

You can do it in Elder Scrolls Online as well
Both names are displayed but you get to choose which has prominence and appears on top

  • @montesi I personally thin it would be better to have the chosen name on display and then have their gamertag in the settings.
It would stop the game from looking messy.
It's whatever floats your boat I guess

  • Personally, I think thematic gamertags will be much more immersive and in keeping with the lore of SoT. When I first started watching footage of gameplay, I was drawn immediately to the character names. Straight away, Brawlin Becca, Cannonbrawls, Looty McLootface & Bosun Bill all helped to set the tone for me, before I'd even seen pirates flying out of cannons or playing instruments or quaffing grog and falling over... RARE's intentions for how to approach this game were set out there for me from the start- light-hearted and fun, punny, but piratey...
I don't play a great deal of online games. I played WoW a fair bit back in the day, and you created individual character names in that. It gives ownership- I know I will identify far more with a pirate I've named myself, rather than the string of words and numbers Microsoft randomly strung together for me.
RARE have put so much effort into establishing the tone and 'feel' of SoT's universe, and I genuinely hope that this will extend to allowing us to name the pirates we want to play as in this same spirit.
Granted, there will be players that want to be 'Captain Jack', but ok, then be Captain Jack Hawkins or Smith or Jones, or 'the bloody', or 'the Explorer of the Seven Seas' or whatever else helps makes your Captain Jack your own.
There will also be players who want to be 'PirateKiller' or 'Isailzdabest' or 'BootySniffer' or heck knows what else. But, with any opportunity to self express, there also needs to be guidelines, boundaries or blocks on certain inappropriate choices- but what those would be is for RARE to decide in their wisdom.
Time will tell, of course. We might see this in the Beta. We might have to wait until release. We may not get it at all... I hope we do though...

  • I see points on both sides. I am "on board" with being able to have unique in game names, but there would have to be a very easy way to report an actual GT for abuse, cheating, etc. I am lucky to have a GT that works in most game worlds, but wouldn't mind being able to add a few more ARRRRRRs to it! ;)

  • @coffeeart687098 in your case, if this is the gamertag you were assigned, you can change it

first change is free, so make sure it is something you like. After that, they charge.

  • @jagyth Read my last message it explains a way.

  • @slipkick01 For sure! I know there are definitely several ways to go about it and make it still easy to report trouble players. Just adding my voice to support of having the ability to make pirate themed names separate from GTs. Even though it does not concern me as much due to my GT.

  • Well if you any of you salty sea dogs had played Pirates of the Caribbean Online, you'll remember their system. It consisted of three wheels of names, you could scroll them separately to find a name suitable to you, you could even leave two of them blank if you wanted just one part to your name, or you had the option to type in your own name, but it had to be approved, so they would give you a temporary name until they could check it and approve/deny the name you typed, I think that system could prove useful here, and with it the naming options could be endless, also reporting griefing players on your crew should be easy, just open the my crew tab in the menu and It would show their gamertag, well that's just my two doubloons, savy?alt text

  • Yeah I was fortunate that my name is already Professor Hook lol. I didn't even know that was my name when I first logged into SoT so I got lucky

  • This one agrees with you.

  • @Professor-Hook the real question is, did you have a hook in game??

  • @merlynjc said in Why we should be able to choose our own pirate names.:
