@laughsmaniacaly You're fine. I get where you're coming from. I guess we will need to wait and see when it comes out. The Kraken did not sound like a push over at least.
5 Ship Types for Sea of Thieves (Speculation /Graphic)
@LaughsManiacaly @Cows-n-Muffins Yeah the vibe I'm getting from the article is that they are skeptical of any crews larger than 4, but might consider it if there is community desire. This is why I tried to keep the count for my chart at max 6 from the beginning because I had a hunch even that was pushing it.
I understand there being no 6 Player Man O' War at launch, but what I would stress to the developers is that I don't think any of us here are thinking of the Man O' War as a common ship used just as much as a Galleon. Just like getting 6 people to do a raid in Destiny takes time and is a real and rare commitment, so too should be getting the crew together for a Man O' War. In this model the 4 player Galleon would still be the primary and most common Sea of Thieves ship, the Man O' War is there to offer that team challenge to crews who have been playing for a while and really want to test themselves. I've held the line at 6 players because I agree with them that any more than that gets hard to coordinate, but I've done 6 player raids in destiny that require communication and cohesion so I would not say 6 players is out of the feasible crew size range, it would just be stressed as rarer and a real challenge.
Legendary Captaincy
After reading these articles I have mixed feelings, for me it will all depend on how the Legendary SHip Captain system is implemented. It looks like for Non-Legend pirates they are sticking with the Sloop and Galleon... (Cmon guys at least a brig in between...3 is a magic number). My guess is that the legendary ships might work in the same way character creation does... where Rare has designed a procedural generated wheel of ships for you to keep rolling until you find one you like. My hope is that these are not just repainted Galleons but actual unique ship models that offer a greater variety of aesthetic and playstyle... not neccessarily an upgrade but contain tradeoffs and sidegrades. If I could customize my ship to at least resemble a Man O War or Brig even if it doesnt have the player count I would be happy. Its a bit different of an approach than I was expecting.. but I remain cautiously optimistic.I feel like now I have to go and design a bunch of legendary ship options! I still think having these 5-6 basic ship platforms in the game would really spice up the base game for non-legend players, and add even more variety of options for legendary ships (And even give more models and create a hierarchy for shipwrecks). We shall see... it looks like Rare has some big post launch plans and if we show them this is important to us maybe they'll make it happen!
I got to thinking what would a good even smaller ship look like that isn't a row boat. Perhaps an exclusively stealth based ship.
I present to you The Cat Burglar
As a stealth exclusive ship this is only for the bravest and most experienced of souls.
Inspired by the ship Dracule Mihawk uses in One Piece.
~Captain Maximillian Zeus
The Damned Rider of the Ferry
and Master of the Song of the DeadI see your point but this ship has a different purpose. It is to act as the smallest ship possible to act solely as a stealth ship. Which also includes largely lowering the viability of the Cat Burglar from other ships.
This can only be done if there is a high trade off. In this case no cannons or crow nest at all.
If the gunboat had the kind of stealth that I am referring to it would be unfair as the gunboat can sneak up and fire away at the ship.
~Captain Maximillian Zeus
The Damned Rider of the Ferry
and Master of the Song of the Dead@nunoazuldimeter one problem with leaving it that far away is if another ship sees it there is no way you can get to it in time rowboat or no. Also if it gets sunk and you dont notice thats a considerable amount of time wasted swimming or rowing. That being said i do love your creativity. May i suggest the next time you do this simply wait for them to get inland then steal their ship, that way you avoid a fight and maybe even them noticing you. Then park next to yours and simply offload supplies and any treasure and sink it.
@shoothere4exp Sad that a member of the community has better ship design ideas than the whole Rare dev team
@Darlain Well we will see... I'm not the biggest fan of the default Galleon model but I recognize that its meant to be a very simple & flexible default model, that can be individually customized. The game also hasnt reached its "Golden Age" yet, so it will be interesting if more beautiful ships become available as the "Golden Age" sets in.
@shoothere4exp Just a heads up to anyone here who hasn't heard; The sloop will feature 4 player crews. It won't be in at launch, but they are looking at adding it in the future. Confirmed from Joe Neate via Twitter.
@shadowstrider-7
That's really interesting... My first thought was that it doesn't make sense since the Sloop was designed to be the Solo/Duo ship and everything about it is designed for that.However.. this could be in our favor. This could mean that they are planning on giving crews (No matter what size) A choice in what kind of ship they want to sail... which leaves the game open to more ship types.
@shoothere4exp That looks like either the Revenge from potc 4
or the jolly roger from the theme ride in Disney
Or maybe the Neptune ship?

You'll be able to choose between 1-4 player crew sizes for both the Sloop and Galleon. Also, I agree. Here's to hoping for more ship types, specifically a rowboat!
@cows-n-muffins Also, like I told the original person who made the gunboat, a lateen sail or a spanker sail would do better with that due to the fact that a jib alone would be kinda... slow.
All my yes. Perfect and simple layout for different ships.
Though, upon release I'd like to see crew sizes a little more flexible. (Given that this isn't a totally serious game) if two players want to man a frigate, they should be able to try and likewise if say 6 want to be on a galleon, again, I say they should be able to. Extra manpower for boarding other ships, or having less crew members to keep things simpler. The choice and risk is up to you. Though of course there should be limits. One or two people shouldn't be able to ride out on a man o war and likewise you shouldn't be able to cram a sloop with 6 people lol

If it fits I sits
Heyho! Nice ideas, I like the illustrations! I myself had the idea of a 2/3 man ship as well, in the form of the Fluyt. The Fluyt ship is an iconic ship from the end of the 17th century and its design was adopted by all major European seaborn empires, making it a common sight around on the seas and a pirate worthy vessel.
It has some good points that I think make it fit well within ship balancing whilst giving it a unique touch. My idea was to give it 3 cannons: 2 on each side, and one below deck facing the rear to suppress pursuers! Like so, but with one of them closed off and without a cannon (pirates need to cut costs, too!):
It'd be a slower ship, but with good defensive options instead of speed. Extra edges to hide from gunfire, and with a rear cannon this ship can fend off pirates well enough whilst still being able to be handled optimally by three people!
It's also recognisable from a distance: from the side it lacks a clear rear castle, and has two masts with two large sails each:
Likewise, its shallow top deck (which is perfect for having a low crew) combined with the broader lower hull gives it the iconic "pear shape" model from the front or rear (as seen on the left side here).
Would you be interested in sketching up a silhouette or two for a lovely Fluyt ship? Size wise I imagine it be similar to the Brig concept, albeit with a lowered rear castle and a forecastle added.
Cheers!
(Apologies for the massive images)
@gilbereth501 That's awesome! I used to love these ships in EMpire Total War. I'll draw up one and see if I can make it work.
Yeah, I used them a lot as well in E:TW. Beautiful ships!
So much in fact, that I went out and made a quick version myself:
Not finished of course, but you get the idea. Perhaps this could serve as a later addition to the 5 ship meta, providing an alternative experience to 2/3 man crews that want to play a bit more defensively.
Here is a size comparison with the others:
I'm looking forward to your variant! I mostly borrowed the Brig's stuff for this anyway.
Edit: I actually meant it to have 2 side cannons, oops! 1 would be a bit little for a 3 man crew. Might add this in the picture later on.
Cheers!

@Cows-n-Muffins Thanks Man! And good catch, I had that 4th top cannon leftover from the Galleon and I originally planned on having 7, but that seemed a bit OP to me when i went through the stats. What do you think, should I leave the cannon and increase the stat or keep it at 6?
I don't know if this was already mentioned but, there should really only be as many cannons on each side as there are crew members. If the man o war is maxed at 6 players on your chart, there's no need for 7 cannons. Yes you could argue an array of reasons why it would be more convenient to have more guns on deck, but the fact of the matter is that it becomes a bit excessive imo
@invy-noris said in 5 Ship Types for Sea of Thieves (Speculation /Graphic):
It's just great what you did, but unfortunately the Man'O War if it's for 5, 6 players, it will not be possible, since the maximum is 4. More than 4 would not be possible in terms of communications according to the developers.
I've seen crews of 8 communicate just fine.
However larger ships should have this disadvantage. Otherwise they would be too overpowered. A crew of random kids with no mics around epically fail on a man-o-war.That's the challenge of a larger ship.
The game won't be released with crews larger than 4, but when more people figure out how to properly run a galleon, I think Rare will change their mind on that decision in the future.
