Rare, I love your vision for the character creator but:

  • I feel like it's implemented very weirdly. I adore the idea of randomizing a set of 8 and having to play a pirate instead of make one. However unless these articles are wrong, you've given us a button that lets us re-roll that set of 8 infinitely. This is an odd change to me, because while it doesn't allow you to fully customize your pirate, people will just continue to re-roll again and again until they finally get the pirate they want.

Why not keep it limited to the first 8, or maybe have 2 pages of a randomized 16? I know I'm certainly going to lock myself in to randomizing the pirates until I see one I really like.

Regardless, not a bad way to go at it at all, I just find it odd that if you're not going to let someone customize from the presets, why let them randomize infinitely?

  • @capn-tonis People, like myself, are already a bit upset at the restrictions in place. Limiting it even further would likely breed more outrage. Taking something away from what is standard in all RPGs today is really a big no-no in the industry. But hey, we will see how it turns out. I for one was pretty let down by it, as I tend to spend hours creating and customizing my character to represent my style as a person and a gamer, and Rare is limiting that.

  • @ethnine That's fair. So yeah I guess, ignoring the "set of 16" part, on the other side of the coin it's weird that full customization is just replaced with "randomize until the pirate looks like what you would make if you had full customization". Just odd but as you said we'll see how it turns out, all the other great news has me incredibly hyped regardless.

  • @capn-tonis Yeah, I kind of wonder how many times I will have to "click the button" to get the pirate I would have created anyhow? Or even if it will happen at all. The characters I create are pretty unique, so its pretty hard to re-create. I don't want to give it away, but my brand is rather notable, so my characters always have a distinctive look, I'll be curious to know if Rare's procedural code even supports my idea.

  • One of the big problems with this is we are locked into our look PERMANENTLY according to the information today. More than ever, I want more control over how I look. I'm also sad this means I'll only get to experience the game with one character, which means I can't enjoy both a man and a woman character.

  • Hey, I love a real deep character generator as well, but the first thing I usually do is hit the randomize button a few times anyway.

Rare cuts right to the chase. Since it's critically important to find a toon you love, could I get a "standby" button to hold a character while the carousel keeps generating other pirates?

  • @capn-tonis I mentioned earlier that perhaps a "lock" button. Whereas you "lock" a pirate you think you may like, then randomize the other 7. Then lock another, randomize the other 6. Continue on in this fashion until you find that one pirate. Someone else had the idea where you lock the pirate you like, the next re-roll brings up pirates with similar features. Anyhow, just thoughts. I think the lock button is needed at a minimum.

  • i love that basically everyone will be unique and it avoids the people who would have just selected the default faces and what not. i wish there was a bit of a filter you could do. female or male. thin or thick build. tall or short. then from there it gives you the randomized people. i don't mind about the locked in character. it kind of locks you into that person.
was hair a customized option later on or just hats and stuff?

  • @hc-king-luis And as I said in another thread... it stops us ending up with 100000 Jack Sparrows on the sea! I like to see random unique pirates....

  • im really big into customizing characters. this is undoubtedly a weird way to do it , but i get it . i like that everyone will have their individual character and you might even recognize them just on looks tied to their gamertag.

the fact that you can reroll the 8 characters seems great so those who want something specific can find it those that dont can get cool and creative characters handed to them.

MY ONE QUESTION IS CAN WE DYE OUR HAIR AFTER?! lol

  • For the love of Mike! Why? So instead of giving me control of my characters creation I get to click randomize a thousand times until I see something that's "close enough" to what I want? Again, why? I'm rather particular about the avatars I run around with and this...grrrr...takes away player choice and ends up being another aggravating chore.

  • @daimyo-dorima Rare really likes making the simplest of things harder than it has to be. They really could have avoided all the criticism if they would have stuck to some standards that are common among games of this type. I understand wanting to reach out and do something different, but there is also something to be said for keeping at least a few basic things to a common standard.

  • @daimyo-dorima it wont be that bad, if you are as into it as i am you would have spent tons of time checking out all the customization anyway. its not the best, but its not that bad and i think it will encourage people to try different stuff than just sexy thin young pirates everywhere haha. plus you only gota do it once so i wish all my chores were done forever after one time. dishes , youre done NO MORE!

  • @musicmee agreed. wondering about the hair though. dying hair, changing styles, etc.

  • @RevanJStone I like hitting the randomize button as much as the next player just to see what pops out. But I also expect to be able to select and lock-in:

    • Gender
    • Height
    • Weight (these two are sometimes placed together under 'Build')
    • Skin tone
    • Head shape
    • Facial features
    1. Nose: shape, size, position, etc.
    2. Ears: shape, size, position, etc.
    3. Eyes: shape, size, position, angle, spacing, color, etc.
    4. Eye brows: shape, size, thickness, position, angle, etc.
    • Facial hair: style and color
    • Hair: style and color
    • Tattoos
    • Scars
    • Accessories

As I said, I'm particular about my avatars. Without those options I'm going to be stuck with one that I really don't have an attachment too and doesn't feel like me. Step one of being the pirate you want to be is pretty much a fail.

  • It's basically a good system. But because the choice is permanent it absolutely needs at least one of two modifications, as others have suggested.

First, it needs a candidate lock option. So if the player sees a character that might do, the player can keep that option while re-rolling the others. This allows progress toward a selection and widens the pool of options. It also prevents a player from passing on an acceptable option in hope of a better one only to be disappointed.

Keep in mind that many players will be so eager to enter the world that they will rush through character selection. So few players will sit there for 30 minutes re-rolling options.

Second, it needs filters. The character sex/gender, at the very least, because that matters to most gamers. That will streamline the process and not annoy the player with clutter while eager to start playing. Other filter options might include hair color, skin color, tattoos (if available), and size.

Just for fun, Rare could animate the characters occasionally during selection with emotes or expressions. It would be hilarious to see a drunk pirate wobbly waiting to be recruited.

  • @capn-tonis can I get a peg [Mod edited for language]

  • @capn-tonis It's already an awful idea that they had with RNG button instead of real character creator. Now I'll have to spend hours rolling a new set of characters until I find an "ok" character. Something I could do in minutes if I'd have a creator. If they gonna limit it to 8 characters without rerolling, it's even worse IMO. I will just restart the game until it gives me something I like.

The random character creator goes against the whole "become the pirate you want to be". From the very first trailer, I've fallen in love with SoT but I won't defend everything Rare throws at us. After today's articles blowout, I'm certain that at some point someone in charge told Rare "You're releasing this game early next year or you're gonna be the next Lionhead and Fable Legends" which forced them to strip down the game a lot. They can say all they want about the grand vision of random character generator but I ain't buying it. It's just a PR talk, trying to make something bad sound good.

  • The press releases didn't say whether this is the final version that will be with us for release or not. Maybe there will be a few more tweaks to encompass some of the things being asked for? I'm sure Rare want us to be the pirate we really want to be..... Only time will tell I guess :)

    Best suggestions ever!

  • It sounds lazy on Rares behalf to just put in a randomized character generator.

  • I think people assume I want them locked in to randomized pirates. I simply mean with the current system it's weird. I'm 50/50 myself on the sides. I like the idea of a random pirate, but I like the idea of customizing my pirate too.

It's cool to see the different opinions floating around here.

  • Skyrim is my all-time favorite game, so I understand the appeal of complete control. But honestly those of us who are not character artists commonly struggle in the fine-tuning of nose type, nose height, eyes height, eyes spacing, eyes tilt, eyes size, etc. Rare's proposed system is a nice middle ground. It just needs some tweaking.

  • I’m not quite sure how I feel about what’s been set in stone....

I guess ya can’t kick it until you try it.

I just hope I like it, after I’ve tried it.

  • This reminds me of Baldur's Gate character creation:
You roll dice and re-roll until you get the best stats. BG let you store the best one you got previously in case you went back. Hopefully they do that.

Also, I want re-customization later, maybe as a legendary pirate perk. I want to change my looks if I don't like the after a period of time. Would be nice to be able to switch genders if I felt like it so I could try out different cosmetics.

  • @musicmee i doubt everyone would go for the standerd "jack sparrow" look... that being said, i dont really mind the system. but i think they definitely need to add paramaters... what if i want a character that has a certain build or hair color ya know? i agree with those discussing "locking" certain attributes

  • @djm-xr07 Completely agree with feature locking - hoping that is a thing. All I hope is that we don't see a million pirates all with the same gold teeth, hairy chest and a six pack, because that would get boring very quickly. The randomisation for a starting look kind of mixes it up a little bit and promotes maybe trying something different to what you would normally go for

  • im glad to at least have some intel on how character customization goes haha. i was concerned we would get to pick from like ten preset guys. its got unlimited potential so im fine. who knows how itll go at launch but i think its good to get all the opinions out there so if they feel the outcry is enough they can make adjustments. or they can just be like 'NO WE KNOW WHATS BEST' and no safe zones lol. (which i agree with ;)) its a new kinda game, cant wait to play it.

  • When I saw this I was really dissapointed. I thought we would get the ability to create our own pirate. So you would choose a basic body type _ basic face type etc and then you would get to customize the character to your liking.

And now we have to choose from a pre-made character and keep choosing random till you like it.

I hope they change it so that what we saw was nothing more than the : choosing body type/gender option :(

  • I like the ability to randomize the characters - gives those who don't want to waste time with character creation something to use and get through quick - plus also lets people try different looks and see something that works - and maybe see something they wouldn't have picked before.

However, there are quite a few people who like to do their characters just right from the getgo and are very particular about it - me being one. Not being able to choose what you look like - especially since its locked into your permanent gameplay - is not a good way of "being the pirate you want to be" that has been stressed and heralded for the game.

We don't have to have tons of custom sliders or super fine details - just use whatever the randomized options uses, but let some of us that want and like to do this - choose specifics.

If there are lots of options, I don't see the "everyone will look the same" problem people are saying either.

So please Rare - I understand you want to give an option for those that don't want to mess with spending a ton of time on creation and jump in. But again there are lots that do like this part of the game, and not having the option seems like a backward step on your vision.

    Good Fortune!

  • Let me start by saying that I've never so desperately wanted a developer to hear out my feedback before; posting on forums to communicate with developers always seemed futile as I imagined my post would be lost among all the others and so have never done so until now. This character creation business has me genuinely upset. I know the team developing Sea Of Thieves are so passionate and it shows in their masterpiece of a game, I know your team cares about the players more then anything. From player to developer I ask humbly, please reconsider this decision. Creating a character I enjoy to play is so important to me and I've been looking forward to this game for so long, my heart is broken.

  • I was very disappointed about that for me the image of the player comes first of all, How can I feel a legend if my pirate looks like a banana? obviously mine is a point of view,I am a very vain person both in real life and in game don't take me like a rude lol but i belive Rare will expand or change the creation of our future pirate Legend

  • @lizalaroo It would be a great time to hear from Rare. Since its been a while since we had any kind of responds since the closed beta. Now with all this influx of news, some clarity would be much appreciated I think.

  • while the possibility of combinations will be many it will not be infinite regardless of how long you re-roll the generator for.
