Stealing ships in PvP

  • Starting off with another thank you to Rare, this game is so much fun so far!

Playing for quite a while yesterday my crew and I got into a couple of ship battles on the open sea.
I ended up stealing another pirates sloop while he was at the outpost turning in some treasure. I thought it was cool sailing around till the pirate spawned back onto his ship and stuck a sword into my back. Maybe instead of allowing us to spawn back onto our ship make it so you can only spawn on your ship if one or more crew member is currently on the ship. If your ship has clearly been stolen then make it so you must spawn into an island with a new ship. But if one of your crew mates is still on the ship then you still can spawn onto the ship and try to fight off the attacking pirates.

The only reason i think this is better than the current situation is bc it will add more ways to play the game. If you commandeer a ship with your friends you can have multiple ships in your fleet. There is an advantage to this and a disadvantage. The advantage is obviously that you have 2 or more ships. But the disadvantage is that it is much more difficult to split your crew up between ships. It kind of stinks when you have to keep spawning on your ship and another crew is clearly sitting on your boat waiting for you to respawn just to kill you again and again in an endless loop. Other than this I believe the PvP works pretty well. I still love the game and can’t wait for the final release, until then, keep up the great work Rare

  • The danger here, I think, is that the intention is for four people to crew one galleon, whereas this would feasibly allow a group of four to capture THREE other Galleons and set up a devastating blockade of FOUR at any given outpost.

I understand the appeal, but I just don't think they'd go for it. Having row of 4 loaded canons EACH would be chaos--especially if they turned them to fire at the Gold Hoarder.

Granted, it would take effort to set up a blockade, but once it was there I think it would be too game-breaking.

  • I don't know. Manning four cannons by yourself isn't very efficient. I can't see a crew of 4 setting up a blockade just for more cannon fire. Splitting your crew will only hurt you. However, I can see stealing an enemies ship because yours is sinking. That has happened to me twice and I felt kind of like a cheater when I spawned behind the enemy and shot him in the back. I sort of felt like he had earned my ship. But at the same time, I don't know what you would do when you're standing on an island with no way to get to an outpost. Maybe if you could somehow signal for help and a passing crew could sell you passage. It would be an interesting mechanic to be shipwrecked on an island because your ship was stollen.

  • This would just cause problems. Your crew captures a ship. The crew that owned is, presumably, displaced to a new ship. So a ship has now been added to the server. Now the crew that you captured the ship from captures another ship, and so on, and so on, until the server has a bunch of full-size ships being manned by partial crews.

Have you had a chance to try commanding a galleon with two people? It's barely doable just to sail decently, let alone engage in combat with it.

Capturing three galleons would be flat out impossible. After the first one, both crews are halved, and at the second one, two of the ships now have only one crewman. They would be more vulnerable than a single, fully crewed galleon.

  • Spawning onto a captured ship also adds strong possibilities of spawn camping.

  • @sithmasterdman

Someone stole our ship the other night...... we waited till they were far enough out before we scuttled it.

    Sharks got him.

Not much value in the ship once the loots off it.

  • Imagine a racing game where people could steal your car
