How to be the captain

  • How is the hole crew and captain thing going to work. Can you take charge of your crew and be a legend to your crew?

  • @flamingbird4500 There really isn't a designated Captain. I have been on some crews were one person was the designated decision-maker, but really you just got to see how each crew you are a part of plays out.

  • If you’re asking if you can tell people this is my ship I’m the boss.... well sure if you want them to all vote you in the brig

To prevent toxic behavior there is a voting system in place. Mutiny is always a possibility so treating your fellow shipmates is well advised. If your unable to get along with other player it is advices you try to solo.

  • @flamingbird4500, I’ve seen this work a couple different ways: 1) You can have a crew determined ahead of time, with specific roles for each player, or 2) you crew up with random people, and figure it out.

As for the whole “be your own legend” part of it, you can bring your own unique missions and expertise to your crew, and players that you’re teamed up with can benefit from your legendary status.

  • My crew already thinks I'm a legend.

    At scraping the shoreline.

    "Scraping"

  • Scraping, the boat version of planking

    xD

  • Perfectly parked for Careening I'd say. I would follow that captain anywhere..... (preferably follow them on another ship) ;p

  • Thanks for all the Replying

  • Always happy to help out a fellow Pirate!

  • that repair costs..........................................

  • If you know how to man the wheel in and out of a combat situation, call what you need for sail length, sail direction, and proper heading better than everyone on your crew, they'll most likely respect you as captain right off.

  • @flamingbird4500 I'm currently Captain 2nd in charge! Basically @lRBTR gives me the helm when another ship is spotted so that he can miss his cannon shots then jump in the water and watch both ships sail away as @Vasco56 unloads the battery on the enemy ship and first mate @BRADBRE-360 boards the enemy in his underpants! If were fortunate @A-SensitiveYeti and @CPoky are with us working the cannons while lrbtr goes for his leisurely swim! 😆🙂⚔Did I mention shanties are being sung by Yeti & I to lrbs three sons under the age of three while the battle rages on? I'd throw em' in the brig but I have a soft spot for the youngest because his first words were Captain Bern!😆

    Sounds about right!!

  • The definition of a Captain

Captain and chief officer are overlapping terms, formal or informal, for the commander of a military unit, the commander of a ship, airplane, spacecraft, or other vessel, or the commander of a port, fire department or police department, election precinct, etc. Captain is a military rank in armies, navies, coast guards, etc., typically at the level of an officer commanding a company of infantry, a ship, or a battery of artillery, or similar distinct unit. Chief officer may be used interchangeably with captain in some situations, as when a Captain-ranked Navy officer is serving as the commander of a ship. The terms also may be used as an informal or honorary title for persons in similar commanding roles. In mining (esp. Cornish), it is an honorific given the superintendent or manager of a mine.

The term "captain" derives from katepánō (Greek: κατεπάνω, lit. "[the one] placed at the top", or "the topmost") which was used as title for a senior Byzantine military rank and office. The word was Latinized as capetanus/catepan, and its meaning seems to have merged with that of the late Latin "capitaneus" (which derives from the classical Latin word "caput", meaning head). This hybridized term gave rise to the English language term captain and its equivalents in other languages (Capitan, Capitaine, Capitano, Capitão, Kapitan, Kapitän, Kapitein, Kapteeni, Kapten, kapitány, Kapudan Pasha, etc.).

  • Captains on pirate ships had one purpose and one purpose only: To command the ship during battle at sea.

Other than in that one specific instance the most influential person was the quartermaster who represented the crews interest and was in charge when the ship was docked.

The captain usually slept with the other crewmembers and had no privileges to speak of beyond a bigger share of the loot (usually equal to the quartermaster).

Realistically in the crows I've played in you usually get someone who coordinates during ship combat (it was usually me) but other than that, everyone just sort of works together. Outside of a battle you're all going on a voyage you voted for after all, there's only one place to go. Everyone is needed to make the ship work, and you can't throw anyone in the brig without a vote.

I just think people will naturally fall into roles. I usually looked at the map and directed someone steering until we got to battle, where I would steer and coordinate while everyone else shot cannons or fought. Sometimes someone else was steering and I would fight.

You'll either have a crew that happily works as a team, in which case you don't need an official captain, or you have one that won't, in which case it doesn't matter what official role you have.

  • @thekitchner is correct, the captains role on a pirate vessel was only giving battle commands when it came to skirmishes, otherwise the quartermaster ran the ship when it came to sailing and such. Honestly in this game ive never had someone decide or vote on a captain. It just ends up being the person who has the most experience and know how of how to sail properly, combined with timing and use of the helm. This doesnt mean the captain is the one on the helm, as a good helmsman can do a good job if the proper orders are still used. One of my first good crews i ever ran across when i was new to the alpha, the captain or guy teaching us gave commands from the crows nest. A good crew will also learn the routine quickly and adapt so that the instant the command is said, they're already prepared and doing it.

  • @tre-oni Thanks

  • I think that the captain of a ship is determined by who is quickest witted and communicates well in difficult situations.

If you think about it, there is always that friend that calls the shots in team based games. That is the captain! Who doesn’t like the teammate who intellectually leads a team to victory?

  • I have a question i own a RP club with around 15 18 people and will there be invite only sessions? But I will definitely play the game and create my on legacy with me and my crew in online hopefully but even if I'm nothing I'll still love it being the underdog

  • O and wot do you think of the name the Sea serpent for my ship 😀
