World Size

  • Does anyone know if there has ever been any concrete confirmation of how large the final map/world will be?

I know it's one of those things they haven't really talked about but seeing as how the map is 90% water I could imagine them making the final map quite large. Much larger than what we saw in the Technical Alpha.

I've been combing through old interviews and whatnot but there is a lot to go through. The one thing everyone always brings up is I think an IGN interview where it's stated the map will take 6 to 8 hours to completely sail around. That definitely does not sound like the Tech Alpha map unfortunately.

And I know games start big and get cut down during development. I still love the map but I'm just curious. After all the time in the Alpha, I felt like I was starting to get very familiar with most of the mid to large sized islands.

  • Actually it sounds about right depending on situation and terminology.

To sail around completely as in to have travursed the whole map inch by inch would take probably a lot longer than 6 hours. Hang on and lets do the math.

It took around 30 - 45 mins to get corner to corner with sails full trim to the wind. Assuming the map is square then that takes around 2 - 3 hours round trip (each corner) again assuming full sail in the wind and no distractions or obstacles. Taking wind into consideration you look more at 3:30 - 4hours longer if your against the wind the whole way. Including the storm and other natural obstacles that time could increase to around 5 at a push. If you stop for a fight with ships in the way then 6ish is plausible.
    Conclusion.
6 hour round trip if you hit every bump along the way alternatively an additional 0.5% increase roughly to each direction as yet not shown.

  • @laughsmaniacaly I guess it could be plausible. I was just kind of hoping for something slightly larger since I'm already familiar with large portions of the map.

Oh well. I guess that's one downside of getting to test the game for so long before release.

  • @the-lion-turtle One of the great things about the way Sea of Thieves seems to be constructed so far is that it allows for expansion. Even if the map that was in the Alpha is the one at launch, the map can be expanded later. I'd imagine the number of updates/feature additions to the game after launch will depend largely on its profitability as a title.

  • @the-lion-turtle

You'd hope it'll be larger if it's going to be around about 60Gig( going by the game on Xbox store) whether it'll actually be 60Gig, we will see.

  • The opening release of the game is one thing. There will be DLC updates new maps this game can grow and grow for years. It depends on how the developers listen to the community. When gamers feel like they are heard by developers and that there is an open dialogue and transparency they rally around the game. This is how a company builds a die hard loyal fan base.

So with this said who knows what the future holds or how big the maps may get!
