My biggest suggestion would be, adjust the current crew sizes.
Trying to sail the large ship with only 4 people was a tremendous task to say the least. Forget trying to sail through a storm.
The "small" ship should be for 2-3 people, and an option for a single player to attempt sailing it.
The "large" ship should be for 6-8 people.
A medium sized ship with 2 cannons on each side and 2 sails should be added for 4-5 people.
Lastly, and small ship with a single, swivel cannon for lone pirates.
The current ship mechanics I feel are far too forgiving.
A way around this would be to add in a ship ownership system of some kind.
The game will choose the party leader's ship by default, unless the crew vote on another player's ship.
After the chosen ship is sunk, repairing the ship would cost, say; 10% of the total gold of all the modifications and customizations.
The owner of the ship would also receive a 10% increase on all the rewards to balance this cost.
This would not only add more of a consequence to losing one's ship, also a reward to keeping one's ship afloat.
Another suggestion would be to add modifications to boats.
Such as;
- Ram for the bow of the boat.
- Shields for the port and starboard sides.
- More Cannons.
- Increased Starting supplies
- Spotlight
- Flamethrower
- Flood Chambers
- "Secure area" for treasure or livestock
- Random gadgets that can be interacted with on the boat, such as the Lanterns.
- And of course, customizations galore.
All of this would greatly improve the game in my opinion.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I shall see you on the seas again shortly!
Yar!!!
EDIT
Include a rowboat with each of the ships, and 2 for the large ship.
This would allow for players to do various things like steal treasure, steal a rowboat, and sail both back to an outpost.
Or if the player's ship is sinking, they can quickly grab their most valuable treasure on the rowboat, and row to safety.
Careful not to put too much treasure and too many pirates on the rowboat otherwise it will sink. In this situation, take the treasure, leave the pirates. ;)
Another great addition would be the ability to steal another pirate's ship after your crew's ship has sunk.
Your ship would temporarily have all of their ship's features until it sinks.
One the experiences I had while playing Sea of Thieves, was I was on a ship with my friend, in an epic ship battle with another 2 man ship. Eventually we sunk them, and they swam over saying, "Don't kill us! We just want to talk!"
So we talked and eventually joined up in a 4 man group, sailing the seas together.
By including 8 player ships, this experience can happen twice.
Infact, 8 player ships would encourage this behavior, if matchmaking is disabled for 5 player ships or greater.
If 10-20 player ships (Man-O-Wars) are included, then players would be required to recruit players they sink along the way, to get enough people for a Man-O-War.
