Bilge Rat Doubloons and Smugglers

  • Bilge rat doubloons have been neglected as a currency in recent years. Once the go-to currency for unlocking limited-time cosmetics, they’re now mostly used to purchase old seasonal items.

I’m not here to lecture Rare about the potential of the great smuggler black-market accords. However, I do think it’s time to rebalance how doubloons are earned while also turning smugglers into a worthy faction. These two problems could actually solve each other.

Gifts and tomes? I’ve come across only one gift in the last three months. When they were first introduced, you could find them washed up on random islands, and there was even a voyage that rewarded them. Now, with skeleton ships carrying smuggler loot, finding ashen chests or gifts has become nearly impossible.

And the Bilge Rats? Do they even exist anymore? Their commendation tab has been rebranded as "Adventures at Sea." What happened?

We're at a strange crossroads where old content lingers, but only as a shadow of its former self. I think the solution is to make Bilge Rat doubloons the primary currency for smugglers and allow gifts and tomes to be sold at their hideouts. Include gifts, ashen chests, and tomes in the smuggler loot pool, and, for goodness' sake, make smuggler loot sellable for doubloons.

Lastly, bring back gift voyages, ashen chest voyages, and ashen key voyages as smuggler voyages.

  • @craftergames706 I'd like to see smugglers as a fully fledged faction with emissary and a company shop

Not much smugglin' when you advertise your ship with a Smuggler Emissary pendant at the top of your mast and a flag on your aft ...

  • @lem0n-curry I get your point but at the same time it's just easy gold with little risk of being attacked by reapers and I feel alot of players are probably so maxed out in everything else a new faction to level up would give them something new to work towards, I think there would be alot more people fighting over smuggler loot if it was a fully fledged faction and there were rewards other than gold

We're getting Guild rep when turning in Smuggler's Loot.

  • @lem0n-curry well that's a bonus I suppose but it's not really something new to work towards is it, a new faction to level up with a new emissary ledger to complete each month would be better and keep more players playing in my opinion

  • Doubloons have been left in the dust since rare seems to be focusing on getting more ways to get gold or new playable things in, but those new playable things could use doubloons or offer them in small portion. Even possibly some rare time limited versions of quests could pop up, and when you vote it, maby you could choose between a haul of doubloons, or a larger cut of gold. Theres really an endless stack of ideas for their uses that could be made. Rare just hasnt pulled from it since they decided that to be the main way to reintroduce old season items.

Adding a faction and emissary on everything is kind of lazy TBH. We already got a Hunter's Call expansion not too long ago. I think the Smugglers being outside of the normal reputation/ledger system fits the theme and is a nice break from the norm. It's probably one of the very few things they got right with that content.

  • @d3adst1ck well maybe they will expand on the commendations/rewards, I agree with the op that doubloons would be a good start it would be enough to entice me to do more smuggler content after finishing most of it already and it took very little time to complete, I'm not so interested in gold, I think it's nice that newer players can get some quick easy gold with little risk (kegs aside) but there's not much of a reason to keep doing smuggler content if you don't want gold

  • when you think about it, both the smugglers leauge and bilge rats are similar...

Bildge Rats: like explosions (fireworks, old black powder voyages)
Smugglers league: Like explosions (new Black powder)
Bildge Rats: Like rum (old rum runner voyages)
Smugglers league: like rum (new rum runner voyages)

and neither have a rep system. hmmmmmm.....
