Pirate Profiles

  • The fact that you don't get the option to decide if you want reputation, unlocked cosmetics, unlocked commendations or gold/doubloons to be shared across the different profiles is making this feature almost pointless.
These are mostly for people that's already been playing for years. They have had the same pirate for all these years, and never changed it, or they have found their favourite pirate and won't change it. Now, with Pirate Profiles, that could change.

If only you got an option when creating each pirate profile, where you could decide what you want or don't want to be brought over from your main pirate.

Do you want to start completely fresh with 0 gold, 0 unlocked cosmetics and nothing to your name, then you can do that!

If you want multiple pirates that all look completely different to each other, then you should have that option. So many more people would spend Ancient Coins on this..
But because of how it currently works, you're better off just spending 149 Ancient Coins to change your pirate once.

So close to being a BIG money-making feature..

It seems you've missed the entire point of pirate profiles. This is exactly what they're for.

The whole point is a fresh start, so if they allowed you to carry over your reputation, cosmetics and other progress, then you'd be effectively duping, or replicating that content onto a new character with zero effort.

That makes absolutely no sense, because the effort is where the money is - it's in the long-term engagement with the game, and the building of a new pirate profile that keeps people playing and keeps them engaged with the world and its content.

It's not about the one time purchase of the new pirate profile, it's about the chance to start fresh while retaining your old progress elsewhere, and the fact that over time you'll create far more value for the game and for Rare than the price of a new profile.

Worked in the video games industry for just about two decades - games as a service thrive on having active and engaged communities - daily and monthly active user numbers are key, along with players staying engaged and active in the game.

This is what it's all about, not a quick buck from a single point sale.

I don't think they've missed the point at all, but maybe you have. Perhaps you're correct from a mercenary, engagement farming standpoint but speaking as one of those "players that have been playing for years" I have less than zero desire or intention to start from scratch after all the time I've put into this game unlocking cosmetics and levelling up and absolutely nobody I've spoken to in my Sea of Thieves Discord regarding this new "idea" from Rare has expressed interest in the same.

I'm incredibly attached to my pirate after all this time and will never, EVER re-roll him with a P.A.P. but I've also got years and years of dresses and makeup and other cosmetics unlocked and purchased over the years (a huge chunk of which are time-limited and thus not even available to earn again on a new profile) that I'd occasionally like to get some use out of without making my male buff pirate look stupid as hell.

Second (and more importantly) you seemed to have overlooked the HUGE premise that the OP added in Rare simply not FORCING people to start from scratch but rather giving them the opportunity to make the decision themselves whether or not they want to. That way players like me and my friends can keep playing from where they are now with a different pirate avatar as desired AND the hardcore players can start a new pirate from scratch if they want to as well. For a company that preaches personal freedom of choice and "tools not rules" that SHOULD have been a no brainer since it caters to ALL players equally.

I think your two decades of video game industry experience has blinded you to the very real fact that the vast majority of video game players do NOT want to see their years of effort and progress wasted by being forced to start from scratch against their will, but rather given the choice to decide for themselves.

  • Yeah, that be a great extension and would make me use it. (pay)

But you're not being forced to start from scratch again.

The whole point of pirate profiles is that you retain all your current progress on your existing character, which as you said in your post, you have sentimental attachment to.

A new pirate profile gives you the opportunity to start fresh and try new things without having to lose your current character and start from scratch. The option was always there from release to start from scratch - it's located in the escape menu - "Delete my pirate profile."

The purpose of the pirate profile is not for cloning your character with a different look, it's a fresh start so that you can work on a fresh set of challenges, achievements and commendations.

Do you know what else gives you the opportunity to start fresh and try new things without having to lose your current character and start from scratch?

    An Alt account.

Do you know what extra perks you get?

    It is completely free.

What's the con of an alt account?

A slightly annoying way to change characters (log out from one account - log in with new).

Secondly, stop using the "You don't have to buy them brcause it didn't hurt anyone" narrative. Just makes you look like you don't accept criticism and becoming a company defender.

You know whats the worst thing of a paid feature that no one wants? The reminder that the feature could have been better and would have been more appreciated. Something I think you very much do not understand.

    Also:

    • not having a friendslist until you add them;
    • not having the items you bought in the Emporium;
    • the ancient coins you bought or found in the game.

What you are STILL not getting is that these pirate profiles are not "giving you the opportunity" to start fresh. They are FORCING you to.

That is the point OP made and I attempted (apparently unsuccessfully) to reinforce. What Rare SHOULD have done is give players the option with a new profile as to whether OR NOT they want to "start fresh and try new things" or simply do what SO MANY PEOPLE in past threads have suggested they wanted and give them the option to simply play a different pirate avatar with all progress and cosmetics they've worked for and earned over years of hard work already unlocked and available.

There are NUMEROUS games out there that allow this; it's not exactly a new concept. You ever play Grounded? Four different playable characters; all with different personalities and voice lines. You can choose AT ANY TIME during the story to swap between them with absolutely no penalty. No loss in storyline progression, no starting from scratch with the in-game currency to buy/unlock things, no losing any of the bases/structures you've built...but you can ALSO choose to start a new game from scratch with a different character to experience the storyline as a whole from a different perspective and make different choices. See how you have BOTH options available to make ALL players happy instead of locking the entire playerbase in an EITHER/OR situation...?

THAT is what the "whole point of pirate profiles" SHOULD be.

I am not disregarding your point here. Yes, profiles CAN BE an opportunity to experience the seas from the beginning in a new and different way. MY point is that it shouldn't be compulsory. The players SHOULD be given a choice by the "everyone has personal freedom to play how they want (except in a bunch of circumstances where you're forced to play how we want you to)" company.

You are literally arguing FOR players to not have personal agency in making full use of rewards they have already worked years and years to EARN with a relatively simplistic gameplay mechanic in favor of "game forces players to do tedious grinding OVER and OVER if they want access to the same rewards they ALREADY grinded for once and almost surely do NOT want to grind for again just to enjoy something they ALREADY earned on a differently shaped pirate model."

You REALLY think someone wants to play through Tall Tales FORTY FIVE damn times AGAIN to earn the gold curse a SECOND TIME? You're delusional.

like pirate emporium stuff's worth jack all in this economy tbh lol

good point about the friend list tho

  • I still laugh when watching the video they mention, "For those who wish to RolePlay differently"

Like, really? Fact I can change my appearance by clothing, beard, hats, eyepatch, pegleg, facemask etc. Means I am changing my role...even my shipsets (10 of them) are theme based and I use them as such.

Let not forget...One pirate achievements dont link. So if you...by chance encounter the Shroud Meg in your new profile...3 days in.

I enjoyed this riddle! 😁 I've spent 16 hours trying to solve it. Still no clue what it means though.

I don't think they mean roleplaying by dressing up, but by how they play; e.g. get Pirate Legend by only stolen loot, or maybe only by being a beach comber, shipwreck diver &c.

Let not forget...One pirate achievements dont link. So if you...by chance encounter the Shroud Meg in your new profile...3 days in.

I wonder how many crying pirates it takes for Rare to make that one commendation account wide instead of pirate 😁

  • @lem0n-curry

I know but that isn’t how most players role play and the reason for them to add it because of it was laughable. Thinking “that what players asked for”

I guess they find (or found) out by looking at the sales figures of the Pirate Profiles.

  • Still holding out hope that they fix these profiles one day, I'm literally waiting to give them my money if they do lol.

  • @neon-ic0n Same

  • @kashmero They must have seen this by now right? Im all for what you're saying and i hope they enforce this. Im just waiting to give them my money DX.
