I got 3 Crazy Ideas. Please Listen

  • Idea #1: I want to have toxicity loosened a little bit. I know that already has some people screaming and punching the air, but hear me out. Toxicity is one of the many reasons people end up leaving this game, such as what happened Summit1G (there are many reasons why he left, this is just one of them). Nowadays, people are banned left, right and center for doing very minimally toxic things. This helps no one, and it drives people away. Therefore, I offer a solution. You can loosen toxicity by allowing simple swears and general toxicity to go by, while more evil toxic people will get the ban, such as racists and predators. You can also incorporate a multi-report system, in which 1 report will activate the process of the investigation, but it will take multiple reports to actually get a confirmed ban.

Idea #2: Competitive Sea of Thieves returns, under a 1 ship vs 1 ship, inside of a set boundary, bracket style mode. Basically like hourglass, but competitive. It would be used with private servers that you can give to the organizers of the event. However, this means that you will be needing to allow the hosts to select how many supplies a boat starts out with, as it drives so many people away and takes hours of setup to even get to the starting point. The supply collecting without choosing how many supplies you start out with has driven many people away from the competitive community as well. In terms of things that would draw people in to the competitive mode, the prizes would have to be grander than those of NAL and SoC. I propose that each time a team wins a season overall, they choose 1 ship item to get from a complete ship set exclusive to that competitive league. Or, they can choose a custom weapon set that is exclusive to that league. Eventually, if you see enough success, you may actually be able to use cash as a prize, which will draw more people in.

Idea #3: Bring. Back. Arena! It would fit the storyline so perfectly if, once Flameheart is resurrected, Flameheart goes to DeMarco and resurrects him and has DeMarco run the arena again as a skeleton, under the command of Flameheart. We could also integrate the hourglass levels into it too. Once you choose to play arena. you can choose to fight for the Servants or the Guardians, just like you do in regular hourglass. All of the ships would dive, and resurface in an old arena formation, with all of the boats sitting there until a the announcer finished, then they can start fighting. It would make sense if you could choose which faction you can fight for, cause you already do that for normal hourglass, and you can fight the same faction anyway in normal hourglass too. The Pirate Lord could be fighting in the arena to try to stop Flameheart from taking over the Sea of Thieves. You can also fit in skeleton and ghost themed cosmetics, like an Eye of Reach completely made out of bones for the Servants. The only problem is, the devs would have to keep up with all of the glitches in this arena, cause they didn't care about what happened to the arena last time, in terms of how broken and glitchy it was. Tell me what I described isn't cool, cause it sounds amazing to me. This bringing back of arena will be absolutely huge for the game, as many people miss it and it has the opportunity of brining them back.

That would be the end of my ideas, but I am not done. I care for the state of this game and its player base. If any of the devs sea this and aren't convinced, I would like to create a presentation of the ideas I have, but I go more in depth. That is the level of which I care about my ideas. Furthermore, If any of these ideas get passed ESPECIALLY the arena one, I would like to be directly involved with it. I wouldn't want paid or anything, I just want to create something that everyone could enjoy. That would be my biggest dream come true. I hope i can convince you of my ideas, if anyone would like to talk to me about these ideas, my Discord friend name is "saint_tinyfoxtato", please feel free to contact me with your concerns, I will answer to anyone.

  • I have a feeling that this will be easily shot down by numerous others since allowing toxicity is not good in general. Im pretty sure basic swears while not exactly condoned, are technically allowed, only some no no terms are not allowed and doing stuff out of bad faith like spawn killing is really bannable under toxicity.

Isolated servers are the reason why arena died, so bringing arena back and another mode in isolated servers will not work out well and would end with the same fate as arena had before. Hourglass as well as safer seas only exist because they dont exist in isolated servers that require different systems to run.

  • Nope! Arena is gone for good and toxicity of any kind is against the Code of Conduct. Be competitive at High Seas but be respectful towards fellow gamers.

  • @goldsmen Take a look at the 100s of other game titles that allow swearing and have more of a player base than Sea of Thieves, and get back to me please. Sea of Thieves is a dying breed, and there is a reason it is dying.

  • #1 isn't really what happens.

Don't target people, don't say hateful stuff, don't be weirdly aggressive and threatening and there really isn't an issue.

People banter and trash talk in this game all the time and have for years.

People get banned for acting in a way they shouldn't and then they get their friends to back them and act like they are a victim. That's all that is. Mistakes happen both by people and by Rare but people aren't just out there getting accounts popped over mild stuff.

It's very very easy to not get banned in this game, even as the most pvp of pvpers. Keep the conduct on the up and up and there won't be an issue. No matter what anyone says after they or their friends got banned.

People have been saying this game is dying for the last 6 years. If you read what i said, i did say that swearing is as far as i can tell, mostly allowed, just not some big no no terms, and near every game ever bans people for using those same no no terms.

If sot is in a recede in numbers, i dont think its because of an inability to say gamer words, i can think of a much more present issue, and pretending that not being allowed to be toxic to other players is the cause of any decline in players is nothing more than trying to fabricate proof for your claim.

Proof against your weird anicdotal evidence being that minecraft has literally banned swear words and is still one of the most played games to this day, and elden ring which has little to any communication at all is still extremely popular.

If there is an issue, too little toxicity is not it and you are probably the only person who will claim it is.

  • You can loosen toxicity by allowing simple swears and general toxicity to go by

Or we can not allow anything toxic in the game.
This idea is like telling a cop "We can limit the stress on prison by allowing thefts to go unpunished! Just arrest the murderers!"

Idea #2: Competitive Sea of Thieves returns

The ideas in this idea sound like allot of work for very little gain.

    Idea #3: Bring. Back. Arena!

Why? it was not enjoyed by the vast majority of players. Why work to bring back, and maintain, something that less than 5% of players used?

Take a look at the 100s of other game titles that allow swearing and have more of a player base than Sea of Thieves, and get back to me please.

That's a large leap in logic; "These games allow swearing, so swearing will bring in players". What?

Sea of Thieves is a dying breed, and there is a reason it is dying.

    Citation needed.

    Edit: Typos

  • The attempt to force SoT into becoming an E-sport game is the source of most of the problems.

Remember that E3 a few years back? The announcer bragging how they couldn't wait to get on SoT to ruin someone's day.
Saw a definite shift in tone from the people that all of a sudden wanted to sink me.

Arena died because of the "competitive scene" trying to force tdm on people. (And was broken as hell)
HG is a mess because they locked major cosmetics behind it and now you have the cheater issue much worse.

Stop using crazy when you mean bad...

  • Bro wants more toxicity AND a dead game mode?

    🚮

  • #1: Define what is considered Toxic in SoT first.....
#2 "Competitive Sea of Thieves" No thanks. We already have Pvp vs PvE players demanding, we dont need Levels.
#3 "Bring. Back. Arena!" Nope, moving on

Sea of Thieves is a dying breed, and there is a reason it is dying.

Do explain where you got such information.

I was gonna keep my mouth shut in an Arena-related thread for once but I have to push back against this.

The actual competitive players (NAL, SoC), were generally very chill. They wanted real competition and joined leagues to fight each other lol. They didn't care much for pub-stomping, and if a pub lobby was too easy, they'd dodge and find a tougher one.

They certainly didn't "force tdm" on randoms, although there was some cross-over between the comp naval community and the TDM community, as a lot of folks also enjoyed gun fights on islands.

The players who spawncamped were either A) doing it to try to get a reaction, B) working on weapon commendations, or C) genuinely practicing boarding PvP, and were misidentified as type A.

I grinded T/LSD on 3 accounts and not once have I ever received a yellowbeard. I didn't comp, but I had friends who did. I navaled, I TDMed, and yeah I too practiced locking down a ship in a 1v4 situation... which I'm sure someone will happily and purposefully mis-characterize as toxic, implying intent to ruin someone else's day, ignoring the actual intent I'm being transparent about.

    But let's move on.

To the topic - until recently, SoT has had an identity crisis. It didn't know if it wanted to be a sweaty action game with a high skill gap, or a funny cartoon pirate game for casual enjoyment.

Arena existed at a time when SoT was juggling both. But then SoT made a decision and leaned one way, for better or worse.

Most of the general community would say better. I lost my community. I lost my favorite mode. The friends I made lost interest over time. I saw discords die out. People moved on. I moved on.

I now enjoy this game as the funny cartoon pirate game, and I play it casually, albeit sparingly. As much as I'd love to see Rare introduce something like Arena again, they've made it clear that they'd prefer not to play that juggling act.

It was evident when they stopped paying attention to Arena's bugs. It's evident in the direction they've headed with the nerfs, streamlining and such. It's evident in the lack of attention HG gets.

What I hope for (though I won't hold my breath) is that if custom servers are ever sold to the public, that we'd have the option of selecting either an Adventure server, or either Arena 1.0 or 2.0.

If (and only if) that happens, some sort of comp league may have a chance at survival, though I doubt it'll have anywhere near the same amount of interest it had before.

  • I'm not fussed about the toxicity stuff. But I would like see arena brought back some how and a competitive league would interest me

There are filters in Setting menu to block players out, right?
But, whatever, I got an idea (about the PVP? toxicity).
    IMO:
To fix the toxic wild-west PvP in Sea of Thieves: it should be an option, or a flag of some sorts (status change) that you can choose from in the Outpost:
it's only possible in the Outpost. Or even a whole session perhaps.

The Basic status is what we got now. And this is where everyone starts with (if they don't change the status).
    (the normal reward scheme)
The PVE version Ships can't be hurt by PVP Ships, neither they can shoot @ them: only boarding is possible (and vice-versa).
    (20% of the normal rewards)
The PVP version are more exposed to the same PVPers regarding visibilities.
    (rewards are higher!)

That would be such a broken macanic. You could just go and help yourself to loot of off other ships and they wouldn't be able to do anything about it. Even if they put some form of ID code in the loot so it could only be touched by said crews with that toggle on, You could run up at the end of a world event and touch everything and the crew that completed the event wouldn't be able to get it back

Yeah, adding different sets of rules for players sharing the same space is always a bad idea because it creates a ton of loopholes and scummy play that is actually enforced by the game rules. Then the developers have to go down a rabbit hole of adding more and more rules to prevent exploits and you end up with a mess of a game.

  • 1 and 2 are pretty bad ideas imo, but I agree that Arena NEEDS to return!

  • @metal-ravage Aye, what ye said.

  • Juuuuust popping in to say.... Arena is no more! It has ceased to be! It has expired and gone to meet its maker! it's a stiff! Bereft of life, It rests in peace! If you hadn't brought it up it'd be pushing up the daisies! Its metabolic processes are now History! It's off the game! It's kicked the bucket, It's shuffled off It's mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-MODE!

  • @tinyfoxtato6252, I like your ideas, but thicker skin is also needed in SoT. Just like the real world. It's not a perfect place, but you can find some gems out there if you play by example.

I think this common sentiment approaches the issue from an angle that really doesn't lead to much good.

I think it's more of maintaining some form of principled decency while processing unpleasant and even harmful experiences.

People have a lot of different personal experiences, things have different effects on different people. That's the importance of being considerate in a shared environment with random people.

A lot of unpleasant stuff will happen over time but I don't think "get thicker skin" does much to help. To me it's more "it's alright to feel and here are tools and steps to help support an individual to get out of the situation".

It's alright to feel, it's alright to be vulnerable, it's alright to get upset, these are all just part of being a person. Just a matter of not letting it turn into more harm and using the tools and support systems that are available to get through it.

  • Why would you want to loosen toxicity restrictions???
But of all people you choose Summit1g as an example? he is the perfect embodiment of the type of players with the attitude no game needs, he's always ready to dish it out and finds it funny when he is trolling on players but when ever he is experiencing some level of hardship he turns in to this ultra, frustrated, intolerant, toxic, person.

Look at it from this perspective, this is a game, all games have rules, heck even board games have them and if you don't accept them you can't play, so you can't just do what you feel like in any game and a level of respect for other players should always be one of them in online videogames.

If you want to deal with tougher skin then go out there in real life and pretty sure you will find enough situations where you will need to have tougher skin, but this is a game with rules and certain discipline, just like going to school except fun.

  • I do not believe for a second that people are getting banned for "very minimally toxic things", people who were toxic often leave out the worst part of their actions to make it sound they did almost or completely nothing.

It's like someone ingame said something like "F off you [fill in a ...ist slur]" and then complain that they got banned for saying the F-word, while leaving out the slur they said that actually got them banned.

You always need to be very critical of what people say they got banned for, because often they don't tell you the whole story.

  • @wolfmanbush, of course I agree. But I will continue to state, nothing is perfect. Issues may plague our daily lives and it is fine to feel emotional or vulnerable at times. But in order to survive, one must determine that some things are not to be worried about in the grand scheme of things. Toxicity over game pixels is awful and hardly solvable, but wearing a coat of armor against it is imperative. It’s not worth the time to get flustered over the bad eggs we cannot change, when there are plenty of great experiences to be had or larger problems to face.

  • @el-c4pitano said in I got 3 Crazy Ideas. Please Listen:

'Grow thicker skin' is just victim blaming.
IE: "I should not be punished for verbally harassing someone! They just need to grow thicker skin!"
And yes; I've actually seen people in other games scream that they should not be banned for using slurs, swears, and insults. Just that their victims need 'thicker skin'.
I've seen it in Overwatch, Dead By Daylight, literally any PvP game, or PvP aspect to any MMO.

Basically, they're saying "I should never face punishment for being a jerk. It's your fault if you're offended by things I explicitly do to try offending you."

Instead of people needing to 'grow thicker skin'; People who belittle, attack, or harass others, or use slurs, need to grow some self control & maturity.

  • @guildar9194, 100% agreed. I am not condoning immaturity or toxicity in any shape or form. But only stating that feelings will inevitably be hurt by those that are of ill intent. It is up to us to lead through kindness, empathy and maturity.. which includes recognition that there are bad eggs, in turn displaying a level of immunity.
