Crashes after game update (Xbox PC app) (FIXED)

  • @mikenlpc Launch the game.
Open the task manager and find the EasyAnticheat service process and close it (end task).

  • Didn't work for me

    @mikenlpc Launch the game.

I was able to play for an hour without problem with this method. I have to try longer

    Edit : nvm, I crash after 5min :)

  • Didn't work for me either, still crashes in less than 20 minutes.

  • Exact same issue for me since latest update.

  • Having the same thing, and i've even bought the game from Steam and it got worst, and im not even able to start the game from there, where i had to refund it and re-install it via Xbox-app, however, with the same issue crashing after 20-30 minutes of game play.

  • Same here, was a sad first experience back. I appreciate the hard work you are all putting in on the team, hopefully this can get resolved soon.

  • I am also having a similar problem with the computer version, playing it through the Xbox Microsoft App. It runs fine on my Xbox, with no issues, or dropping. But like... literally like 20-40 minutes after I started playing, in Safer Seas, no less. And at least 3 times last night while playing with a friend in High Seas. It's only seeming to affect the computer players. I haven't tried reinstalling, or ending the anti-cheat task, but it doesn't sound like people are having much success with those solutions anyway.

  • @kowg4n it's happening to me as well on an AMD system. I'm playing through PC gamepass. The crashes are making the game unplayable. I've tried on Safer Seas and it still happens. It's only since this last update. Steam has it on sale for $20, so I'm going to download from there and see if that's the problem. I'll update you after I test it.

  • PC Microsoft Store player - same issue. Crashes after 20-30 mins with no error message.
Re-join game to a sunk boat each time. All drivers are updated

    Sad Panda

  • I have 2 PCs (old gaming rig and new one). Both are more than capable of playing SoT. One with windows 10, the other with windows 11. Both will crash regularly when playing after this latest update. Being that the only common denominator is that it's through the Xbox App on PC, this is clearly the culprit.

Hoping we get a resolution to this issue soon. My friends and I just got back into SoT after we stopped playing years ago. But with the current state of it, I can't play.

  • Exact same here.
Crashing every 20-30 mins. Sometimes every HG Fight minimum 1 Time.
Reinstalled the game, didnt make any difference. Thats actually crazy. Im not gonna play until this is fixed.
Im also on MS Version, W11. Never had Issues running SoT. Graphic Drivers are all up to date.

  • The game is unplayable at this moment, atleast on PC.
I was just finishing off a ghost skeleton battle, got disconnected and sunk.

Not going to waste my time on the PC version until they release a fix.

  • I love the irony. Had to install a COD-sized update that would supposedly fix a crashing issue (which I never experienced prior)... and yet, now I experience this in the middle of raids, naval combat, and just sitting idle. It's impossible to grind to accumulate and sell loot for any substantial XP for ranking up. Expect to accomplish 1 raid per session.

  • Co-signing this thread. On PC through XBOX app, the game has been crashing at 30-40 minutes. Very little issues before last patch. Performed full uninstall/reinstall as was advised during patch release. This weekend after a crash, I attempted to rejoin session and got an endless black loading screen. Force quit after 5 minutes or so to try again and my session was gone. Ryzen 5600X CPU, RX 6650XT GPU.

  • Rare are on it:

Update: After downloading it from Steam, i had an almost 5 hour session with only 1 crash at around the 3 hr mark. And that 1 crash was during a dive to a skeleton fleet, which was weird. Because it let me reconnect but I was at a tavern when I spawned back in. I was able to run to the dock, just to see my sloop sinking. It was only 1 crash instead of the 8-10 that I was having, but a demoralizing one, costing me Grade 4 Reapers.

  • It's random as hell. Whole day with only minor lag spikes, now whole day of crashes.

But hey silent board is still here!

  • My game has been consistently crashing as well. I have it downloaded on PC through the Microsoft store. It usually hard crashes the app then follows up with a Hazelnutbeard after 30 seconds or so of getting back in. Then another hard crash about 30 minutes later.

  • +1 for me too. been troubleshooting it for days and got no where. no logs or anything indicating a problem and no error message when crashing. just drops back to windows.. I'm also microsoft xbox store game on PC. have seen the post from Rare. hoping for a quick resolution as its too painful to play.

  • Same problem, any solutions yet?

  • The developers are already addressing this issue https://www.seaofthieves.com/ru/community/forums/topic/167002/players-experiencing-game-crashes-18-03-24/1

I thank everyone who viewed this post and wrote about their problems associated with this error. Thanks to you, the developers noticed us.

  • Same... been away from this game for a VERY long time and felt like playing today only to have it crash on me 3 times... this game is NOT one that you can play with crashes you lose all your progress from the voyage it's so terrible. Guess I'll put it away for another year or two.. :(

  • With the Anniversary event coming up tomorrow and the uncertainty of a patch being released before that, I've heard that some players were able to alleviate the issue by disabling Guild invites in the Settings.

I haven't tried it myself yet, but I thought it'd be worth sharing for anyone wishing to take part on the event tomorrow. Let us know if this works for you.

Edit: After disabling guild invites, I had a 1+ hour session without any crashes.

  • Still a problem, so you're saying that I just need to be on steam for a guaranteed fix?

  • @permajank No, some Steam players have also reported constant crashes.

  • This issue might be finally fixed later today!

I made a support ticket a few days ago and they just answered this.

This also got me a 40+ minute session without any crashes. So somehow it works. But it's great to hear that Rare is on it, it'd suck if everyone was dealing with crashing right before this big event!

  • @onasaki turning the guild settings off has done barely anything for me. Maybe 10 extra minutes if anything it's made it worse. My friend says I've crashed more often today than I have yesterday.

  • same thing here- since update i get about 20-30 minutes then crashes back to desktop. really bloody annoying when you are in a quest and you have loot onboard in solo!!!

  • I've already tried everything from the instructions for the Microsoft PC and it still crashes, it's a miracle that sometimes it lasts maybe 2 hours, but normally it's 30 minutes.

  • Just turned v-sync off and I think I'm on a pretty good run here..

  • @deus-i-dragon I spent the money on the Steam version after his, and have had no crashes in 5 days. My buddy who was on MS Store was crashing, next day got Steam version and no more. It's a real fix, just not a fair one.

  • not sure if its related but thought it might be, but is anyone else having issues with xbox PC app not logging into their account sometimes and requiring a reboot? I've had the issue for pretty much the same period of time as this sea of thieves problem and vaguely recall updating the xbox app at the same time as the sea of thieves game.

I'm seeing a flood of these errors in the event log when it won't log into the xbox PC app.
