Make Battlegills fishable at ghost forts

  • The idea is really simple. Battlegills rely on complete random chance of there being a fort active or skeleton ships appearing, both of which are very risky for long term fishing. Them appearing at Ghost forts would make it a lot easier for fishermen to be able to get them.

  • I've ready people do it from the Pirate legend hideout when they hear cannon fire there. You must be level 100 in Guardians tho as far as I am aware. I will try this sometime.

  • @zig-zag-ltu you don't need to be 100 in guardians, maybe to get access to more water and other spots but yeah pl hideout is under sea dogs tavern (same as ferry of damned) so if you hear the skelly fleet there then it can be done

  • I recently finished my Hunter's Call and, yeah, some of the requirements can be a pain. But I did learn that fishing at the Sea Dogs Tavern island, at the jetty facing Reaper's Hideout, is quite good for Battlegills if the Skelly Fleet event is active. Just make sure your ship isn't close enough to aggro the skellies.

By far the hardest fish to get, for me, were the Blackcloud Wreckers because of the specific requirements.

  • @realstyli Thanks for the advice. By any chance do you have any tips for catching/finding the following:

    • Muddy Wildsplash (Apart from fishing in the Wilds)
    • Sand Battlegill (Apart from fishing next to an active battle)
    • Bone Ancientscale (Apart from fishing in Ancient Isles)

    Unfortunately, not really.

You can minimise the risk of other players attacking you by fishing in less-travelled spots and making sure you are at least 5 squares away from outposts (outside of render distance) and close to a sea post (for example, my fishing spot for Muddy Wildsplash was at P2, IIRC). Also, turn in often rather than try to hoard fish.

It's still very RNG, some days I would catch 2 or 3 rare fish in an hour, other days I wouldn't catch any. If you have a crew, I'd recommend doing it together as it would be more productive - doing it solo was very tough!

I started the grind in January with maybe 10% of my fishing done, only the Splashtails at 100%, and I finished it a couple of weeks ago. The Treacherous Plunder alone took two days, about 7 hours both days, at Tribute Peak. I took a few breaks to focus on other commendations, but it was a lot of grind.

  • @realstyli Nah not planning on getting Hunter or Legendary hunter unless it will somehow happen naturally. I just want the hook line and sinker commendation finally :D

  • @zig-zag-ltu

I will also say to stay away from large islands too. You're only going to add Islehoppers in with the spawns. So fish around small islands and keep grubs on board in case a skelly ship comes by, you can switch to trying to catch that Battlegill.

Good luck with trying to get that commendation!

  • @realstyli Thanks matey! I think for battlegills I will just fish in the hideout or maybe a skeleton fort if I am bored or decide to tuck. Most of my fish apart from Splashtails are from sunken ships and floating barrels. ^^

  • @zig-zag-ltu I think another thing you can do is just sit by rocks and go fishing for some other kind of fish. If you hear skeleton ship music, then you can fish for battlegills and the skelly will never rise from the water. I've done it once but I don't have the music so I just randomly started getting battlegills mixed in with my devilfish. Didn't understand what was happening until I went to sell.

  • @zig-zag-ltu all I'd say is be conscious of where you're fishing and what overlaps there are in the fish.

So fishing for battlegills in the roar where devilfish are added to your pool will make it harder to get specifics.

Same as fishing for wreckers in the wilds with grubs also add wildsplash to the pool etc. Not always in your control, but does make it harder

  • @hiradc Is there some guide (ill try to google later) about what kind of fish you can catch best with what bait or something a long the lines. Like the exact best spots for pondies where PVE wont reach you etc. ^^

Shark Fin Camp? Hidden Spring Keep when not active has a pond and hardly anyPvE.

On the commendation pages for the fish it states which bait to use; also available on the website; e.g.:
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/profile/reputation/HuntersCall/plentifins

    Plentifins
These Shores of Plenty natives are considered good luck, unless you're an earthworm - their favourite.

+1 to not needing 100 in guardians. It's a bit of a pain as you need to be very specific about where you cast your line, otherwise it'll snap as the fish swims around. But it's a nice little open secret among fisherfolk.

  • Battlegills should show up in HG.

    Just sayin'

  • @arterialmist819

Battlegills can be fished at the Fort of the Dammed when the fort is active. Simply fish there!

In order to do this, complete the Skull of Destiny voyage. Get a rowboat and a storage crate. Go to the FOTD and scuttle your ship. Row to the back of the fort. Once you are in position, activate the fort. Jump down to the rowboat and fish.

Right now with the Chest of Fortune in the fort it may attract more attention than usual but most players wait until the fort is completed and steal the chest. You may get unlucky and someone may complete the fort for you.

  • both of which are very risky for long term fishing

Spot an active fort, fish from ship. What very risky about that? If someone sails up, tell them “you’re just fishing”.

Especially if the fort has been active for 5 hours XD and your in your third crate of bait

While that’s a good thing on paper, if I come to a fort I’m attempting to complete I’m going to sink any ships in the area. I don’t know if this fishing ship will attack me once the fort is completed. At least with my idea you can stay hidden. The FOTD has a shroud around it.

  • @coffeelight5545 But with the CoF in the FotD you have a very high chance of other ships going there to get the CoF. Plenty will do a simple tuck check and will spot you very soon. A skull fort there fore would be easier to do.

But easiest way is to fish in a fleet event. Either with a rowboat in that area (that rock east of North Star Seapost is a good one to hide yourself a bit while fishing) or while fishing in the Pirate Legend Hideout

The CoF will only be in the fort for 3 months unless season 10 is extended. Currently my suggestion is more difficult now. I’m just telling everyone how I fished for battlegills for my captaincy milestones. There are a few ways to get battlegills. Mine is just different, I’m not going to say mine is better than yours.
