What Monkey Island games are recommended to be played before the first tall tale?

  • I just played Secret of Monkey Island and am wondering if I should play the rest of the games before or if the tall tale focuses solely on thr first game's events? I'd be playing the rest between this and the second tall tale.

  • The Curse of Monkey Island. Guybrush has some references relating to that one I believe ^^

  • I honestly don't think you need to play any games prior. My crew and I had never played Monkey Island, and when we started the tall tale, it was amazing. It's so outside-of-the-box with the way other tall tales are designed, where (provided you don't look up guides) you have to put your thinking cap on and put 2 and 2 together to solve things. We had a blast.

  • did you enjoy playing it? if you enjoy the genre play 'em all imo

if you just like casually getting into the lore I'd just binge youtube playthroughs and enjoy it that way or find either convenient lore type of videos or deep dives if you're really interested.

I often watch deep dives on random stuff including games that I have no attachment to and find that enjoyable for some reason lol, so if you are already interested that might be even more enjoyable for you.

  • I think you'll get most of the references if you only play The Secret of Monkey Island, but it takes place after The Curse of Monkey Island and one major character in the Tall Tale debuted in that game.

There are some references to LeChuck's Revenge as well, the very first character you meet when starting this Tall Tale references that game, but I don't think that's essential as the Tall Tale journal kind of gives away what happened with them (although, it is a good game and I recommend playing it if you enjoyed Secret).

There are also a couple of anachronistic references to Return, but I don't know if they were intentional or not.

  • I purchased the Xbox 360 "SE" version but I didn't play much, the old school controls were a little too much for me.

However, the parts I did play gave me a good background for the TT.

  • @milkcalf
The Tale timeline is located right after the third (CoMI).
Even when you do not "need" to play any MI, the current Tale has a bunch of mentions and refes from the tSoMI (MI 1) and CoMI (MI 3). Also very few from LCR (MI2) and ... RtMI (MI6) which I found very weird because its events are after all of this.
I didn't find any mention of MI 4 and 5. Although I played those only once long time ago because they are VERY VERY FAR from being my favorites. So if there IS any mention in the current Tale, I didn't noted it at all.

Edit: Sorry. I posted exactly the same info RealStyli did. I read it after :')

  • @captthreepwood the events of the TT is after Monkey Island 3 (ship sailing off with "Just Married") as it was never stated where the couple went to for their honeymoon - Rare took the opportunity to fill the gap.

    Yeah, I know :)
I wander why you mention me.
I am sorry mate, but what in my text made you think that I didn't know that? =D

  • @captthreepwood stating that Monkey 6 info is relevant to the conversations in the Tall Tale would be the reason why I responded. Apologies for the misunderstanding.

    Oh!.. No worries mate! =D
    I stated that because:

SPOILER ALERT: The Wally's shop is there. And the ghost at its door says something similar to "this is not Wally's shop anymore." Which at this point of the story makes no sense because the first appearence of his shop in that location matches the times of the younger Pirate Leaders and his shop is destroyed during that period. Not with the original Pirate Leaders still sitting in Important Pirates Table in the Scumm Bar.

You can read more about Wally here.

  • Thanks for all the answers and discussion. I've played 1-3 by now so the details are registering well.
Guess 1-3 being important is prooving useful because I'm definitely loosing some steam and might not play the other entries super fast. Already felt like there was a loss in quality in Curse.
