Make cursed cannonballs more common

  • I can barely find any cursed cannonballs

  • @partytimepvz these were reduced because of the hourglass mechanic. Very unlikely they’ll change it back.

  • @tesiccl Oh I didn't know this thanks for telling me though

They reduced the availability AND the effectiveness with that update.

IMO, it should have been one or the other. Green balls are all relatively useless these days with how short the duration of effect is.

Really, if they wanted to fix the problem (spam), they should have just done a cooldown on firing them and not messed with the effectiveness or the availability...but I digress.

Another offense nerf/defense buff that has only served to make battles even longer and hasn't really improved the battle quality at all.

  • In my opinion, it is good that they are very rare. Therefore, I don't think it is great idea to make them more common.
Instead, I recommend to add Cursed Cannonball Crate, which will cost alot of Gold (25,000 perhaps), but will give you access to 20 Cursed Cannonballs (4 types, 5 each).

  • @selgewick
25,000 gold is absolutely nothing to a long time player, and I can make that back with a single hourglass win (which I am very likely to win if they didn't buy curses as well).

Cursed cannonballs need to be rare because even the nerfed ones can still completely change the tide of a fight when timed right.

  • @partytimepvz I have found the best way to find cursed cannonballs, is in cannon row boats. As you sail the seas, shoot off to islands and check the stock of cannon rowboats. They usually have a bunch of cannons some blunder/firebombs a couple chain shots and the ever elusive cursed ball!

    Good luck

  • @theglimglam 50,000-100,000 then?

  • I think cursed cannon balls are at about the right balance now. You need to take a look at both sides of the coin here. Sure, it'd be much more fun to spam a bunch of jig balls, weary balls, and grog balls on the enemy cannon line. Yes we all want a ballast ball as a good last shot in a volley.

But the other side of that is how would you like the arms race? The match is now won by the first team to hit an anchor ball and a weary/jig/grog ball at the cannon line. Imagine being ferry locked by a boarder after one lucky anchor/rigging ball.

Nobody wants the combat to be over after the first volley. We like the drama, the tug of war, the ups and downs of trying to get the upper hand. Yes, we all hate the PVP that lasts 30-45 minutes, but we equally hate the PVP that lasts five seconds, especially if we lose. A good PVP encounter should be 5-15 minutes. To me that feels like a curse ball or two per side is about right.

  • @selgewick
I don't think they should be purchasable at all, and making them more expensive just favors players who have been playing longer and have gold to burn.

  • @lordqulex the problem (as you even stated) was that they were being spammed. They should have solved the problem by putting a cooldown on the fire rate of them and just left everything else about them alone. They could have even balanced the cooldown across the different ship/crew sizes. Instead, they effectively nerfed them into obsolescence. I don't think I've won or lost a fight - or even had the tides of a fight be turned - since the nerf... And I've done a LOT of battles since then both in and out of hourglass

  • @selgewick I actually really like that idea

I want to say "tools not rules" but let me give you in inside track: that's just something I say sometimes because good software developers are lazy. 🤣

Every single cannon in the game works exactly the same. That makes good, clean, simple code. Every piece of cannon ammunition takes the same time to load, the same time to fire, the the same time to reload. Even pirates and fireworks take the same time to load. Changing that now, for cursed cannonballs, or creating a cooldown, would be a lot of work.

Changing the spawn rate of cursed balls was fast and easy. Probably only one constant in one file had to be changed. Quick, easy, clean. Could it be tweaked up a little? Sure. But changing the fundamental mechanics of cannons is a much larger and more difficult change than just making them spawn less frequently.

Frankly, I'm shocked fireworks function the way they do. The amount of work that went into that makes my head spin.

  • I would like it if the green cursed balls were more common.

[edit] maybe some of those things wouldn't be as hard as you think...or maybe these devs aren't as lazy as you think.
