I know I know, having the option of a private server defeats the purpose of "being a pirate", but like sometimes I just wanna chill in my sloop with my girlfriend or by myself and gather some loot without worrying about some bully in a galleon or brig attacking me just cuz he outnumbers me and can do that. I believe it brings a sort of, boredom to the server when I am too busy worrying the galleon bully to even progress anywhere in the game at all. I'm pirate legend and I couldn't tell you how many times I have been griefed by a crew of pirates that just wanna attack every sloop they see. It makes the game unplayable when you get into a server that with one of these weirdos.
Private Servers
It's been established that 'private' custom servers earn no game progression. A custom server is not going to help you earn Gold.
These servers are currently limited to SoT Partners and select organized groups. Do not expect this 'no game progression' policy to change if/when these servers are opened up to the general public.
@the-crazy-beard that's kind of the point of my post, I know there wont be any private servers but I wish there were. The player base is large enough where the games economy will be fine, you'll have probably more than half the community that wouldn't even use the private server function. I know what to look out for and I know how to counter it but its annoying that I have to spend the majority of my time looking over my shoulder rather than playing and enjoying the game because of some loser that just likes to bully smaller ships.
@foambreaker I don't think pvp is bullying. Galleons spending their entire time in the server attacking a sloop of two players is bullying lol
@mf-opossum Ok if you like PvP then here is what you do, no private server needed, the sloop sails faster upwind than the gally, so go into the wind and leave.
@foambreaker yeah, I know the tricks and how to play the game lol that doesn't make it any less annoying
I strongly recommend watching Rare's panel at EGX 2022 where this question was asked to see their perspective. It's been frequently asked for over the years.

Hi all, here are the teams thoughts on PVE/PVP: Given the debate surrounding PvE vs PvP has been going for some time, the team wanted to address it, laying out our vision and the design intent of the game. Sea of Thieves at its heart has and always will be a shared-world adventure game, and this is something that is not planned to change in the future.
In Episode 2 of the Sea of Thieves Official Podcast, a nuanced discussion surrounding the community debate took place with a number of the senior team involved in the creation of the game. With our position on this topic now clear, the discussion surrounding PvPvE is no longer relevant to the Steam Discussions.
Having closely followed the discussions that have taken place surrounding this topic, we feel that it no longer has a place within this forum as it has, at times, led to unwarranted hostility between members of the community. To prevent this, we will be locking all past threads discussing this and will keep a close eye out for any emerging threads that revive the subject. We ask that users do not repeat post about this topic as any following this thread will be removed and may result in action being taken against offending accounts. If future developments in the game warrant new discussions, then we will of course open this up for the community to freely discuss. If this happens then any such conversations will be closely monitored to gather feedback, but will in no means be an opening for personal attacks to take place again. That being said, we will be dropping anchor here.
