Suggestion: Anti-piracy trading company

  • The goal of this faction is to create civilized society. In exchange for giving up on plundering the emissaries are paid portion of reward in advance.

    Emissary mechanics
All ships in this faction can see each other on map.
After placing the emissary, it can’t be taken down for 5 in-game days.
Emissary is reset but not lost after sinking.

Faction accepts only clean loot. Stolen loot is not accepted. Loot is marked as stolen when different crew is the first one to place the loot on board their ship. Loot placed on Reaper ships gets cleansed and accepted by the faction (basically confiscating stolen goods – but they also hate Reapers).

Rewards are split in two parts. First part given for placing loot on board. Second for delivery.

Reward for placing loot on board of ship per Emissary rank: 0%/20%/40%/60%/100%
Reward when selling to the faction per Emissary rank: 100%/110%/120%/130%/150%

    Emissary rank 5 bonus
Emissary works even more like an alliance. When emissary crews place loot on board or sell it to the faction, the grade V emissaries also get 50% of reward. It can be combined with the normal alliance and has the bonus perk that on board loot of other crews' gives additional 50%. This basically means there is almost no difference in reward when your crew or other emissaries in alliance get to sell the loot.

    Placement
To promote player interactions the deliver point should be at one island. Sea Dogs island would be perfect choice, it's in center of map and there is enough room to place multiple deliver points around it. Giving crews room to unload their goods in peace is important to maintain order. It's also good vantage point when watching Reapers.

I know it's nothing new. Basic game trope of having opposing factions. No need to worry about the Thieves part, the faction still promotes stealing - it's just mainly focused on stealing from Reapers, because loot stolen from non-Reapers would have to be sold to other trade companies for normal price without the Emissary bonus. There is a demand for more cooperative options so a trading company that could work like a soft matchmaking for alliances would be pretty nice.

  • @burnbacon For once, I agree with BurnBacon. (No offense matey)

  • @arch-ideall this is why we came to the Sea of Thieves. To leave this behind. We want to adventure, drink grog, amd steal loot.

This idea just doesn't make sense in Sea of Thieves.

  • @captain-coel Why would it not make sense? Pirates at times had allowed targets that were fine to attack and targets that were not fine to attack. If Reapers are based on stealing from all the others, it makes sense to have the opposite faction that steals from one group - the Reapers. Robin Hood like trade company, that steals from the bad (worst) guys, makes completely fine sense in Sea of Thieves.

  • There is the grand maritime union in lore. I dont think they would work quite like that however, they dont care about if money is clean or not considering some of their lore, they just care if they are in control or not.

  • @arch-ideall

All of them are meaning lore wise it does not make sense.

Sea of thieves is surrounded by a strong fog called the devils shroud. It tears down any big ships trying to come in and can get like 1 little ship in very certain curcimstances.

The anti pirate company you talk about is the Grand Maratime Union in this universe. Most pirates fled to the Sea Of Thieves to escape from them. Out here, rules are diffrent. And the whole lore is about 3 factions trying to shape this pirate paradise to their liking.

But if they steal from the bad guys and sell it to profit themselves, they are not the good guys they are just a better 'mafia' ? If you are a victim of a reaper, this would not help you by any means, someone else would just get their loot, just like any other reaper better than the other crew or any boat on the server?

  • @thorumsu Lore can be expanded. For example there could be survivors from crushed Grand Maritime Union saved by Merfolk who would start the new faction.

@zig-zag-ltu Even good guys need some darker side to be more realistic. The main point of the new trading company would be to provide better accomodation for players who are not interested in killing others on sight. You would take the emissary, possibly see other crews with the same emissary on the map, and due to the nature of the trading company have higher chance of setting up an alliance with them. It of course has the downside of being seen on the map by the said faction emissaries, but that is compensated by the split reward system and Grade V emissary bonus. Faction being against Reapers lore-wise and mechanic-wise would be a motivation to team up with other crews inside of the new faction against common Reaper threat. Generally the new faction would increase a chance of cooperation for players who seek that. Of course some players would use it to troll seeking ships for pvp, it's just guidelines after all, but that's the risk.

  • it kinda sounds like you are trying to lobby for a soft "PvE only" implementation through the backdoor. So no.

  • @parrotlord6426 Trading company that makes it more likely, and it's still only chance based, for players to form alliances is not pve-only. So it's fine.

Thats just like, your opinion man. Whatever favours server alliances and "PvE only" playstyles is nothing else then a demand for exactly that.

  • @arch-ideall The reapers are not here to steal loot from other players, they are here to prevent loot from going to the trading companies. The idea of stealing loot from other players is valid for ALL trading companies. I regularly hunt other emissaries of the same that I am representing. Why go look for and dig up 20 chests, when I can raise GH and go sink another GH.

From a lore perspective, we left the "safety net" the "good people" behind when we came to the Sea of Thieves. Having a "nice" trading company seems just wrong, they are all selfish and have their own motives.

Idk, it's an interesting idea. I think it would work better if it was more simple. The faction would be called ''Reaper Hunters or something that would mean exactly this on top of the current faction''. Perhaps every emissary would be able to have an option to do this and still represent their same faction, they would just add a small red ribbon on their current emissary flag.

Those ships from then on would be able to only cash in 75% worth of normal loot and 200 % of Reaper loot. (this would also give an incentive for other Crews to engage the reaper faction)

Reapers would make same amount , ( I would still want the portal hopping nerfed or less gold for emissary rewards)
Against reaper Hunters +50% extra on each emissary level.

Also rewards for both adversaries sunken flags and log books should be increased, but same for every other ship.

    Just my two doubloons

  • @parrotlord6426 You could still pvp and steal loot from whoever you want even while being the emissary for the new faction so there isn't any PvE only in it. It just might be under certain circusmtances more profitable to cooperate instead - which is completely fine for social PvPvE game.

@captain-coel The motive of the new faction would be to basically end piracy. That's selfish enough.

All the trading companies are against that. That is the GMU we left that outside the shroud. This doesnt fit in SoT im sorry

  • I don't like the idea of any emissary that I'm locked into for multiple days/play sessions.
Maybe one day I want to raise Gold Hoarders? The next I want to be a Reaper? And the next the Order of Souls.
Locking me into a faction for almost a week would make me never want to use that faction, as my goals change from one session to the next, never mind an entire day.

Edit: Sorry, I did not see it said 'in game days'
    Still, that's a long time.

  • Too unnecessarily complicated, IMO.

  • @captain-coel That means it's already in the story. Just gotta get few members of GMU inside of the Sea of Thieves to set the new faction up. They wouldn't care much about hoarding gold, collecting skulls, or catching chicken. Main perhaps secret goal would be to prepare grounds for GMU to enter the seas for real. The other side, other trading companies would be able to do their things in more peace so they could be fine with it. Only issue might have Ramsey, they want to end piracy after all, but even he could tolerate such act, because the faction would help against the Reapers.

@eguzky Locking the emissary for some time would be a downside needed for two reasons. 1st to avoid someone using the emissary just to see ships of other crews and then switching to Reapers. 2nd to improve the stability which is the main theme of the faction. Being locked would make it less tempting to just fight other crews working for the emissary and then switching to other factions for turn-ins. You would likely reach grade V in those 2 hours and then you already have benefit of getting 50% of rewards other crews get.

@galactic-geek Slightly complicated, but should be fairly quick to get used to. The systems are partially implemented already like the game tracking treasure being placed on board and alliances showing ships on the map so it shouldn't be completely difficult to implement for the developers.
