just had an idea so i'm sharing it (even if it will never come)

  • SO i love this game and it's econom system wich is a "farm for buying whatever you want" thing but not for 1 thing , ancient coins , the only way to get them is by luck (the skelly) AND by the plunder pass wich is 250 PER SEASON , so if you want 1000 you need a year wich is too much time.
SO i had an idea , we could FARM these coins BUT very harshly and time conssuming for the coins you get BUT a way to earn them anyway
i'll give you an exemple (that my dream in this game): There will be a new company where we could sell all loot at the regular price but instead of gold we get like "ancient coins fragment" or smth idk THEN (ofc there will not be an emissary for that) THEN with like 500,000 of these (wich is a lot if you don't have an emissary) you could by items from a npc then go to a specific island , and do a rituel like the fotd BUT the item is marked on the map and everyone could steal it then resell it for ancient coins fragment, WHEN you get to the island with that item a world event spawn (so a big cloud etc...) where you protect a totem or smth from monster and SURELY players when after i think 20-30 min the event is finished we would get ancient coins themed loot that can be sold for a total of i think 100 should be good for the works.

That was my idea but really it is poorly designed and the only thing i want is a way to get them beside of RNG
thx for reading my dreams till the end!

  • They should let you buy AC for gold.

    1 AC = 10,000 gold

    So 1000 AC = 10,000,000

So it is still and grind and people will pay actual money still. But this way, people can be rewarded for PLAYING THE GAME. And not for opening their wallets and spending their salaries on non-tangible garbage nice cosmetics.

    #IHateMonetisation

  • I feel like the whole situation with ancient coins is pretty OK, EXCEPT the amount you get from the plunder pass. Every other game I can think of will give you a full refund with extra premium currency to spare if you buy the paid track of their pass.

    Except SoT.

I honestly don't really understand why they refuse to make this a thing, it looks greedy from both perspectives of a new player and dedicated players. I get that it's an optional purchase, but when a majority of cosmetics are going into the emporium and plunder pass, I can't help but feel like they're just juicing money out of me at every turn.

  • @gallerine5582 The difference is in other games the paid pass gives you unique cosmetics. In Sea of Thieves the paid pass gives you a discount on upcoming emporium items. The best past of this pass is free.

  • Alliance servers licking their chops.

Any farmable ancient coin idea is quickly dispatched by the sheer existence of manufactured alliance servers.

  • I like the way the old coins are in the game as they are completely random. Unfortunately with the game the way it is, it's hard to have something interesting that is "merit" to whoever got it. Sea of Thieves is not a game where the best players make the most money, but where the most accommodating make server alliances and farm without any risk.

    Yes that is true

No. It's all smoke and mirrors. You say the 'best part' is free. It's not. You get a few cosmetics, sure. But 90/100 levels are just piles of gold and Doubloons. It's a huge illusion. It's a good deal, yes, but its whole existence is completely forced, and to be honest, a slap in the face to dedicated players who are essentially being told that they fancy cosmetics aren't obtained by being good at the game, but by having money.

Tbf that kinda works against your point; you get early access to it, the set isn't even exclusive its just early access to what will come back in a couple months or so

  • @targasbr Sea of Thieves is essentially just Free Market: The Video Game, so even though their method isn't the most admirable/enjoyable, it happens.

And if they happen to be more successful than others, it just means those other, less-successful players need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

Otherwise we just all get bogged down with regulation, right?

When a part of the community breaks rules in a game and destroys the essence of it, it's time to simply put limits on some things. Freedom is important, but setting rules for the proper functioning of a system is even more important.

  • I disagree heavily. The free plunder pass gives the exclusive stuff and even premium currency. 250 ancient coins you were supposed to purchase and got for free.

Then there is a tiny bit of extra items which come with the paid plunder pass. If you really want them, you purchase 10€ / $ worth of ancient coins and get back 250 coins from it again. In the end you get 250 coins for free, 250 coins from the paid pass which will end you up with -500 ancient coins for a 3 month long season pass. Thats like 5 € / $. Come on.

If you play SOT actively enough, you will get Ancient Skeletons from time to time as well. And even if not: The items from the paid pass are coming to the emporium one or two seasons later for you to purchase full price if you really want them.

Another thing: The last (christmas) season pass actually contained 250 free ancient coins and another 750(!) for the paid one. So you could actually "break even" if you purchased it and end up with 1000 coins to spend for the next pass or however you want to.

Full emporium ship sets plus outfits will easily cost you around 3000+ ancient coins. Comparing that with the 500 ancient coins for the paid plunder pass its very very reasonable.

Other games usually work the complete opposite way: All the stuff (good and bad) is completely locked behind the paywall with a few freebies every 5-10 levels or so. But the majority is paid and never comes back.

The whole season pass is basically a "voluntary support the developer" thing right now instead of the pure cash grab that other game developers are designing their passes. Its relatively fair and you don't miss out on exclusive items. They will be released later and more expensive.

Last but not least: I have over 200 million gold. And I do notplay alliance servers so thats not too hard to obtain. According to your calculation, that would mean free 20.000 Ancient Coins for me and everyone farming gold.

That would mean a significant decrease in Ancient Coins purchases which again results in a decreased income. That will never pay off. Premium currency is a way to compensate for continuous development, updates, bugfixing, QoL, staff, marketing, server and maybe even Disney licensing cost that this game creates and can most likely not be entirely backed up by the initial 40 bucks full game sale alone. At least not forever.

  • @sweetsandman i actually agreeso yea rip

    This ☝👏

  • Plunder Pass and the whole seasons are fine...you pay 10 Euro/Dollars, get 5 back and earn a full shipset (normal price when it appears is about 20-25 Euro/Dollars) and a costume
People just want more and more, and all that for free...stop already, they are a company and want to make money too...

  • it has been said before and i'll say it again. Its more of a way to support the game we all love. I'll buy the pass every season no matter what is in it just to do my part to keep this game alive.

One very good reason to not buy the plunder pass: I don't like ugly items messing up my clothing / shipwreight chest orders. The skins take their time to load and I have to remember where my favourite weapons are to just click them by memory before the thumbnails do load.

I will not buy a plunder pass "just to support" if it gives me an actual disadvantage. High level complaint here, but on the other hand it can't be that hard to create custom filters, favourite weapons / items / clothing / equipment being shown on page 1 or just saving custom loadouts for ship sets and custom outfits. I'm not a game dev. I know. But it can't be that hard to save a certain combination of clothing / item IDs as an outfit. I don't know how many players I talked to that randomly dropped how they wish there was a "save outfit" option. But its 4 years later and we don't have it.

Weird reason to not buy ingame stuff, but thats my personal thing and I cant handle it. I would even wish that I could create a ticket asking Rare to remove certain items (season pass or free) from my inventory, like the seasoned parrot cutlass for example. Because hiding items from inventory also does not exist.

Sorry for ranting here, but for me thats a good reason to not purchase a plunder pass. I don't want to be forced to carry more "unwanted" items in my chest thats never being used.

Same here, some are meh, but I like the shipsets that came out through the plunder pass

This has nothing to do with new stuff in it...at least not that much, most just go 1 position further, that's ok imo

But what bothers me is that order change a few updates ago...especially the shipwright chest is so messed up right now...I'm really struggling with this
Before this it was a mess, yeah, but at least if you went through the tabs, you got to the same set on the next tab, until you go to the cannonflare tab...
Now it's a nightmare to search for a specific set

  • @axecaliburtv
this is a perfectly acceptable train of thought! i also wish they had a way to save a cosmetic loadout. add me to the list of people asking for this.
