Commendations to Push more PvP

  • Something that I think us lacking in sot rn is the pvp, don't get me wrong the pup battles are epic but I just don't think there is enough of them.

Commendations can help push PvP by rewarding pirates for their seabattles. PvP commendations is something that Rare has already done I just think that they should do more of them and spice them up a bit. For example: have a battle with 2 other crews while in an alliance. - This would make people want to form alliances for the soul purpose of PvP rather than for server alliance.

    Thoughts?

  • @avacadobeard244 i think pvp commendations in adventure mode is a fine line to be walked. It would have to encourage one off situations.

Looking for kills/sinks could easily lend itself to spawn camping for the only reason being comms, or auto sinking every boat you see. It would remove catch and release if you will.

Im all for comms that are for participating in a 3 boat battle or fighting a rival alliance. But im not sure there are enough unique situations that would be fun but discourage otherwise empty encounters.

edit: could even be sink X Emissary as Y Emissary. Added to otherwise unique combat scenarios there are 2 or 3 pages of comms, but once done they wouldn't keep encouraging pvp.

  • PvP commendations are a great idea as long as they are "opt-in". We don't need to give people a reward for dunking on tall talers and fresh spawns.

"Opt-in" can easily be done with the use of the Flag of the Reaper's Mark.

  • @avacadobeard244 Sea of Thieves is and always has been a 'Shared World Adventure Game'.

Meaning you never know if people you meet are going to employ the 'Fight or Flight' reaction.

Encouraging the killing or sinking of others will skew that beyond the balance that Devs envisaged.

I don't see it happening, purely because it would disrupt the already tenuous balance between PvPvP.

  • I think the future of consensual and competitive pvp will be the custom servers if they add in a chunk of appealing customizable options.

People are gonna do what they do in adventure it's all too random and full of differences to truly manipulate with incentives at this stage of the game.

Custom servers have potential to become tremendous for pvp that people want to participate in all around.

Earlier on we had one fort and nothing else to do so pvp was just a major part of the daily experience. The game is different now and has brought in a lot of different types of gamers, there are people that just flat out do not want to fight and I don't see it as a positive to try to lure them into it. Just leads to a lot of reporting and verbal fighting that doesn't do the environment much good.

  • @wolfmanbush they can chose whether or not they want to fight, I just think commendations can be used to set up better and more interesting battles, maybe a commendation could be "battle another crew at Smugglers bay" or "battle an alliance while in another alliance" see what I mean? Your right, we need to try not to force people who don't want to fight, to fight. But setting up cooler fights using commendations may be a better way of putting it.

The incentive to fight is using people's desires to complete objectives against them by getting them to do something they don't want to do in order to please others.

People have the ability to run up on ships, sneak up on ships, chase ships down and do what they do. If that's what happens that's how the food chain goes but people shouldn't be lured into doing things they do not want to do (with something as significant as combat) in an adventure environment imo. Pvpers aren't ever actually left out as long as they can sink who they want to sink. They aren't owed a fight just the opportunity to hunt.

  • @wolfmanbush understood

  • @triheadedmonkey What if it was a multi-way opt-in system using the mechanics built into the Flag of The Reaper's Mark? It wouldn't disrupt the balance and would give those that are looking for competitive and organic PvP a true outlet beyond just attacking every ship they see hoping someone wants to fight.

  • I will say what I always say. The game has zero skill-based matchmaking. Encouraging PvP in such a way is unleashing the wolves on the sheep, it would be slaughter. That doesn't help the already off-putting for some and tenuous PvPvE gameplay. There are players who simply cannot compete. I myself struggle to compete in some PvP scenarios (CQC specifically, I'm decent at naval), but I live with it and accept it because it's not overdone and I think the balance is well-struck as it is.

  • The incentive for PvP is the loot and the fight. There does not need to be more.

  • I think more commendations like the cursed cannonball one's would be cool but I dunno about just kills or ships sunk that would encourage mindless slaughter which is not what this game is

  • @sweetsandman Is that not just Sea of Thieves though?

  • @triheadedmonkey Aye! Though, it's a shame that the Flag of The Reaper's Mark has such amazing, yet simple mechanics, and it hasn't seen any quality content in nearly 3 years.

  • @avacadobeard244

Like others have said, any sort of direct rewarding for killing players and sinking ships will interfere with how the Sea of Thieves shared world plays out. The game itself doesn't do anything to influence how one crew responds to another, it is purely up to the players and their motivations. If you start rewarding players for racking up kills and ship sinkings, you'd end up with some players simply farming others for their commendations.

It's very important to remember that not every session will be or even should be filled with "spice." It's not meant to be for every session to be teeming with non-stop action. You're meant to have nights where things are constantly active and other nights where things are more calm. You're meant to experience these periods of high player density and low player density, because that's part of what makes the social experience of Sea of Thieves a bit different each time you come back to it.

  • I just don't think there is enough of them.

Commendations can help push PvP by rewarding pirates for their seabattles.

We will be flooded with endless "I hate players sinking me for no reason"

  • @triheadedmonkey so I take it this wasn't the greatest idea but i think it was worth mentioning just to get all yer opinions. I shall consider all of this information for future threads, 😂 thanks for acknowledging my post though!
