Parrot Microphone Test

  • So I just thought of an idea to help out with issues around mics in-game... Specifically, a way to test that your mic is working and being heard by the game (and, in turn, other players).

What if each outpost had a parrot that you could talk to and it would playback your mic audio?

  • Or
every pet parrot would do that.

  • @zerrryy

Well, that would be paying for a feature... maybe "and" every pet parrot would do it?

  • I like it. Could be very useful to diagnose issues in open crews especially

  • I don't think that something physical at an outpost is actually worth it, yet a similar option in the settings would be appreciated

  • @flamenoir4280

I have suggested that before, and that's how other games do it... but one thing I've learned about Rare over the years playing this game is that they prefer to do things in-game practically if they can. I actually like this approach for Sea of Thieves, I think it fits in well.

  • @realstyli
Agreed, yet the problem I see here is that players might simply not be able to understand the direct purpose of this and instead think it's just a cool feature.
As well it might be taking space for nothing much at the end of the day, simply because it doesn't concern much of the community.

The lack of use and the missunderstanding of it might be the two reasons as to why it shouldn't be physical.
BUT if you manage another additional purpose for it that'd make it more than what's suggested so far then I'd be down for it.

Your voice is pitched up to sound like a parrot. (hours of fun)

  • @foxdodge
Kind of gives a childlish face to it say like the talking tom days or smth
But wouldn't that alternate with the main feature?

  • @flamenoir4280 As long as the audio can be played back then I don't see a reason for it to have to alternate.

  • @flamenoir4280

There are a lot of things in the game that don't really get utilised much by many of the community, but they bring the world to life. It does concern a lot more of the community than you'd think. Every Windows update has the potential to "break" the audio input (resetting the "Set As Default Communication Device" in sound control panel)... hence why I make sure to check it after every update.

But, even then, I am not 100% sure what SOT is picking up in-game, because there is no way to actually monitor your input other than finding another player and hoping they'll help you. It's a frustrating issue and I see this as a big QOL addition for many.

As for pointing players at it, again there are things that are never explained in-game. But there could be a few ways to guide players to it - such as a loading screen message or a note from Larinna. Or maybe have a nearby NPC give information on it.

  • Great idea

I always hate being that person to tell them that they’re echoing

  • Go with me here.

    We'll call it the YakBeak.

  • @realstyli fair enough then

  • @realstyli

I can already hear myself talking to that parrot:

    "You're the best!"
    "You so good!"
"Pirate lord ain't got nothing on you!"
    "You rule these seas!"
"You carry your crew on your shoulders!"
"Your armpit is so manly, it can scare The Kraken away!"

  • @greengrimz

    No one fights like Greengrimz
    Douses lights like Greengrimz
In a wrestling match nobody bites like Greengrimz!

  • It would be difficult to implement (for example, how long could you talk before the parrot starts repeating?), but it's such a novel idea that I fully support it.

Still, doesn't the chat indicator on the top right already do this when activated in the settings menu?

  • @galactic-geek

Yes and no... The indicator only really shows that something is being picked up by the game but not what it is or how it sounds. It could be (and I've had this happen after one particular Windows update) picking up audio from a completely different source to your mic and showing it as active when it's not. It gives zero indication of the level or clarity of the source either.

As for how long, I would imagine the parrot would only repeat the last 5 seconds or so that it picked up.

As RealStyli said, this would help find out what audio input SoT is taking, as currently there is no option to manually choice audio input for some reason. So I have no way of knowing whether the game is using my low quality headset mic or my good quality Blue Yeti without finding someone and asking.

Ah, Blue Yeti! My favourite mic! I just never managed to make myself spare the money for it.

Quite ironically though, I use G935 which cost like $222 and come with a ton of bugs and malfunctions.
