What if? SoT as a true MMO!

  • Coming back to the game after an almost 6 month break and very happy to see Rare adding more and more.

But once again I find my self longing for my experience in Sea of Thieves to have a bit more permanence.

Being someone who played " Puzzle Pirates" for years and always loved the mechanics of crew permanence, blockades, politics, owning islands, managing them, the extreme vastness of the ocean. Almost everything about this game was amazing other than the fact that it was a 2d game that always left you wondering what it would be like in a 3d world that you could hack and slash your enemies instead of fighting through a puzzle.

Sea of Thieves, I feel has made this reality a possibility!

Rare! Please look into this old gem "Puzzle Pirates", and use its mechanics minus the actual puzzles to elevate Sea of Thieves into it's inevitable evolution into a Massive Multiplayer Online game.

I have made previous posts in some detail discussing mechanics that would fit, and am now posting again because I would like this idea to get more traction. Also more hopeful because one of the previous posts I discussed that they should do more with mermaids and underwater, to my surprise they did!

Rare is listening to us as a community and it is very hopeful!

So id like to go through some features that would turn Sea of Thieves into a true MMO following in the foot steps of Puzzle Pirates. More than it already has!

    1. Vast oceans:
Sets of Archipelagoes that take long periods of
time to get to. Partition Ocean areas to allow for potentially
      unlimited amount of players!

    2. Chartering:
A new player doesn't have a full map until they
explore for themselves or are in a crew that have someone
who had already chartered ocean territory to navigate them
      selves.

    3. Crews & Flags:
Guild like systems like in any MMO that are
permanent and build upon by players, and stays in the word
      upon logging out.

    4. Bases/Forts:
A Flag in control of multiple crews would be
lead my King or Queen of the flag and requires some sort of
island owner ship, within an archipelago's main colony
capital. Governors can be selected if they are within the Flags
Senior officers. Colony Capitals give access to control parts
and build up of that archipelago that are habitable.

    5. Crews:
Crews within a flag are lead my Captains who require
a ship to make the crew

    6. Ships:
Ships are build in shipyards by the cooperation of
crews within a flag gathering resources from controlled
islands, and resources gained through other means, Trade
with other flags, in other archipelagoes that might have
resources that are cheaper or more readily available.

    7. Professions:
Use what Sea of thieves has already done with
the trade companies to have crews specialize in certain trades
to benefit the whole of the flag. This will help balance out
      play styles.

    8. Blockades:
Endgame content which will pit other flags and
their crews against each other in order to take over a fort
      under another flags control.

    9. PVE:
Everything rare has added to the adventure mode is
great content that would also be good in a bigger world space.
Other inspirations from Puzzle Pirates would be treasure
hailing with nets. Fighting PVE mermaids with ship like
platforms on giant sea turtles and megalodons. Fighting
Voodo Cultists on haunted ships. basically more Flameheart
like content that could be dynamically change location to
draw players to certain areas. Maybe you need a charter to
      find.

    10. Dynamic accessibility:
The Sea of Thieves could be the
center of the new ocean and always accessible. Maybe you
can sail past the red seas in a certain way and it can server
hop you into this game mode or just access right into it
      through the main menu.

So I've just mentioned some of the more important aspects that could potentially elevate Sea of Thieves into a much bigger game with years and years of content. The current state of MMO's could really use the base platform of what rare has done to make an absolutely EPIC LEVEL experience. Can you imagine how HUGE a game like this would be?

I love Sea of Thieves and I want to see it grow even bigger. The current mmo community is focusing on survival and base building. Really only a little work would be put into doing thing like this considering all the tools are in front of Rare because of the baseline progress of Sea of Thieves. The real work would be in the networking and ability to get thousands or potentially unlimited players, with new tech. But this endeavor would be well worth it for Rare to invest into, If they aren't already. Which would not surpise! Im likely not the only one thinking all the possibilities that this game has in its future!

With that all said you swabbies, why dont we all get in on this discussion and see where it goes? What are your thoughts, ideas, additions?

-Could Sea of Thieves be turned into a MMO?- Captain Tibbs.

  • I'd play this : )

  • @stevetibb95 for sure you've got some very cool ideas here. If it were another pirate game I'd probably be interested.

However, one of the big reasons I've been in to sea of thieves for so long now is because its not an mmo of this nature.

I hope it stays this way.

  • My MMO days are over.

World of Warcraft still charges a monthly fee to play.
    SoT is my WoW killer.

I can't help but chuckle at every MMO-like suggestion for this game when there is no persistence on the servers by design.

  • @stevetibb95

I'd rather it be a new game than an overhaul for SoT. I like this game for what it is, but I'd always be up for trying a new pirate game. Not enough pirate-themed games in my opinion.

  • Expanding on this idea, it wouldn't have to be a new game. I have even thought about the lore aspect.

The Mysterious Stranger talks about the "Grand Maritime Union" which controls the Sea's outside the Devil's shroud.

What if we were given access to a quest line that pits The Union against the Sea of Thieves.

For instance , a portion of the Shroud is broken and the Union fleets are able to come through.

This could be a season event and at the end of the season the sea beyond the shroud would now need to settled and taken over by a "Captaincy" System of crews from the sea of thieves.

So you could always go back to the shared world experience but also able to access the Sea beyond the shroud which would be a more pvp focused larger world with larger player base. Focused on persistent gameplay factors as listed above.

The Ideas keep flowing.....Rare, come hop in the conversation, this is GOLD!

  • One's ability to thrive in this new Playmode could be based on the "Captaincy system" in which pirate legends are able to create a Flag system which functions as a guild.

  • OP, your naval MMO already exists. It's called Naval Action.

Having played a lot of each, I much prefer Sea of Thieves.

  • Repeating myself...Why is there always a suggestion to change SoT to another game!?

  • I agree with some other folks. I think there are some cool ideas here, but it’s a totally different game from sea of thieves. I’d say that while we’ll probably get lots of new content over the lifespan of the game, the most you’ll be able to get in terms of changes to the actual core gameplay are going to be a handful of minor adjustments per patch at most.

  • @goblyn792 Im talking about a new game mode, using all the same base mechanics.

  • @butterybarnacls When they released Arena is this what happened , no its not another game , its still part of SoT!

  • Nevermind the fact that none of this is technically possible, but yeah forum mushrooms have us tripping the light fantastic.

As long as the water looks great.

  • @joe-krakatoa Not possible? You should look into the capabilities of the new UE5. Not to mention the already stylized graphics also help.

  • @captaintibbz UE5 is the front end. You'd need to do major restructuring of how the backend works to convert this game into an MMO which would basically be like rewriting the entire game from scratch.

    It's not going to happen.

  • for me in this game the main problem is gold, there is nowhere to spend it. Level up in a trading company for the sake of glowing pants or a stupid ship paint? There is no incentive to play because there is no development. The character is the same as everyone else's and the ship is consumable like bananas.

  • @captaintibbz

SoT is shackled by its Xbox pedigree.

Keep dreaming, when those players are still crying over black loading screens and hit reg issues.

  • Doesn't sound bad but that would be a major change to the current structure. I'm content with the current set-up but wouldn't mind your suggestions as well, definitely would add more spice.
